Apoquel costs about $84–$98 for 30 tablets at US veterinary clinics in 2026, which works out to roughly $2.80–$3.25 per tablet no matter which strength your dog takes. On a once-daily maintenance dose, most dogs land somewhere between $42 and $195 a month, depending on how many tablets (or half tablets) their weight calls for. Add the exam, a recheck and bloodwork, and a first year of daily use for a 25 lb dog comes to roughly $1,283–$1,683.
Prices vary by region, clinic and dog size, so treat these as a budgeting range. Below: cost by weight, Cytopoint and Zenrelia compared, insurance, rewards, and the daily skin support some owners add between flares, like our Dog Allergy Relief & Itchy Skin Chews. None of that replaces a prescription. Never stop, reduce, or switch a prescribed medication without your veterinarian.
Call your vet now, not after you've priced out pills, if your dog has:
- Open sores, oozing, crusts, a bad smell or hot spots that look infected
- Sudden facial swelling or hives (this can turn into an emergency fast)
- Itching together with lethargy, vomiting or not eating
- A puppy under 12 months old with itchy skin: Apoquel is not labeled for dogs under 12 months
What Apoquel Costs at US Vet Clinics in 2026
Here's the quirk: the clinics below that list several strengths charge the same price per count for every strength (3.6 mg, 5.4 mg and 16 mg). What drives the bill is how many tablets your dog takes each month.
| Source (location, date) | Listed price | Per tablet |
|---|---|---|
| Twin Peaks Veterinary Clinic (Loveland, CO, 2026) | $84 / 30 ct; $163 / 60; $237 / 90; $316 / 120 (listed as chewable tablets, all strengths) | $2.80 down to $2.63 |
| Complete Pet Care Animal Hospital (Raleigh/Wake Forest, NC, May 2026) | $92.10 / 30 ct, any strength | $3.07 |
| Banfield Pet Hospital online store (rev. June 2026) | $94.86–$316.23 across strengths and counts | Not broken out by count |
| Fetch Pet Insurance Rx (Sept 2026) | $97.50 / 30 × 3.6 mg | $3.25 |
| Hearthstone Animal Clinic (Cypress, TX, Jul 2026, upd. Oct 2026) | First 14 days, medium dog: ~$70–$85; maintenance ~$75–$90/month | ~$2.50–$3.00 |
Bigger boxes help a little: at Twin Peaks, 120 tablets cost $316 (about $2.63 each) versus $2.80 each in a 30-count box.
Apoquel Cost per Month by Dog Weight
The US label doses Apoquel at 0.4–0.6 mg/kg twice daily for up to 14 days, then once daily. The table below follows the label dosing chart, uses $2.80–$3.25 per tablet, and assumes the same price for every strength. "First 30 days" counts 14 days twice daily plus 16 days once daily (44 tablet doses). "Year 1" counts 14 twice-daily days plus 351 once-daily days (379 tablet doses).
| Dog weight | Label dose (per dose) | Maintenance tablets/month | Maintenance $/month | First 30 days | Year 1, daily use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 6.6–9.9 lb | ½ × 3.6 mg | 15 | $42–$49 | $62–$72 | $531–$616 |
| 10–14.9 lb | ½ × 5.4 mg | 15 | $42–$49 | $62–$72 | $531–$616 |
| 15–19.9 lb | 1 × 3.6 mg | 30 | $84–$98 | $123–$143 | $1,061–$1,232 |
| 20–29.9 lb | 1 × 5.4 mg | 30 | $84–$98 | $123–$143 | $1,061–$1,232 |
| 30–44.9 lb | ½ × 16 mg | 15 | $42–$49 | $62–$72 | $531–$616 |
| 45–59.9 lb | 2 × 5.4 mg | 60 | $168–$195 | $246–$286 | $2,122–$2,464 |
| 60–89.9 lb | 1 × 16 mg | 30 | $84–$98 | $123–$143 | $1,061–$1,232 |
| 90–129.9 lb | 1½ × 16 mg | 45 | $126–$146 | $185–$215 | $1,592–$1,848 |
| 130–175.9 lb | 2 × 16 mg | 60 | $168–$195 | $246–$286 | $2,122–$2,464 |
Cost follows tablet count, not body weight. A 35 lb dog on half a 16 mg tablet can cost about half as much as a 25 lb dog on a whole 5.4 mg tablet. The 45–59.9 lb band, at two 5.4 mg tablets per dose, costs as much as the 130–175.9 lb band and twice as much as a 60 lb dog on one 16 mg tablet. Ask your vet whether a different tablet combination within the labeled dose range fits; don't change the dose yourself. Some vets prescribe differently from the chart: Hearthstone notes a 50 lb dog "typically" takes the 16 mg tablet.
Some dogs only need Apoquel seasonally, so the year-1 column is a ceiling, not what every owner pays.
Why the first two weeks cost more
The twice-daily phase doubles tablet use: 28 tablets in 14 days for a dog on one tablet per dose. That's why Hearthstone puts the first 14 days for a medium dog at about $70–$85, close to a full month of maintenance.
Apoquel Chewable cost
Apoquel Chewable was FDA-approved on June 9, 2023 (FDA FOI summary). Banfield's online store lists it at $90.00–$299.00 for 30- or 100-count boxes across strengths (the store doesn't break the range out by box). Dogs like the taste, and the FDA has published a consumer update on accidental chewable overdoses, so store the box where your dog can't reach it.
First-Year Budget Example: A 25 lb Dog
A dog on one 5.4 mg tablet daily also needs a diagnosis visit, a recheck and bloodwork. VCA recommends periodic bloodwork for long-term use (that's a clinical recommendation, not a label requirement).
| Item | Low | High | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diagnosis exam | $69 | $90 | Tequesta (FL), South Pasadena (CA), Animal Hospital Southwest (TX), Dallas Vet |
| Recheck visit | $48 | $56 | Tequesta, South Pasadena, Animal Hospital Southwest |
| Bloodwork panel | $105.46 | $305 | South Pasadena adult bloodwork; Animal Hospital Southwest lab panel |
| Apoquel, year 1 daily | $1,061 | $1,232 | Table above |
| Total | about $1,283 | $1,683 |
Low: $69 + $48 + $105.46 + $1,061 = $1,283.46. High: $90 + $56 + $305 + $1,232 = $1,683. For context, Nationwide's 2024 claims data puts total allergy costs at $1,000–$2,000 a year, with allergy meds running $20–$150 a month.
Support the skin between flares. Our Dog Allergy Relief & Itchy Skin Chews ($49.99) combine wild salmon, sardine, chia and borage oils with quercetin, phytoceramides, biotin, colostrum and probiotics in one daily serving by weight. Apoquel vs Cytopoint vs Zenrelia vs Numelvi: Cost and Differences
| Apoquel (oclacitinib) | Cytopoint (lokivetmab) | Zenrelia (ilunocitinib) | Numelvi (atinvicitinib) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| How it's given | Tablet or chewable | Injection under the skin at the clinic | Tablet | Tablet, with food (Merck Animal Health) |
| Frequency | Twice daily up to 14 days, then once daily | Every 4–8 weeks as needed | Once daily from day one | Once daily |
| Onset | 1–2 days (VCA) | 1–2 days, lasts 4–8 weeks (VCA) | Ask your vet | Ask your vet |
| Typical cost | $2.80–$3.25 per tablet | $53–$270 per injection by weight, plus exam | No published clinic price found | No published price found |
| Key label cautions | Not for dogs under 12 months or with serious infections; may raise infection risk (including demodicosis) and may worsen neoplastic conditions | Dosed by weight (min. 0.9 mg/lb); given by your vet | Boxed warning on inadequate immune response to vaccines | Approved Feb 25, 2026, for dogs 6 months and older; field safety data limited to 28 days |
Cytopoint cost
Cytopoint is priced by weight because it's dosed by weight (at least 0.9 mg/lb). Pumpkin lists $60–$90 per shot for dogs 10 lb and under, up to $180–$250+ for dogs over 80 lb, plus a $50–$75 exam. Animal Hospital Southwest charges $110–$270 per injection, South Pasadena Animal Hospital $53–$253, and Dallas Veterinary Clinic from $79.
Run it for a 35 lb dog: $100–$150 per shot (Pumpkin's 30.1–40 lb band). Every 8 weeks is 6.5 shots a year; every 4 weeks is 13. That's $650 (6.5 × $100) up to $1,950 (13 × $150), before any exam fees. If your clinic charges a $50–$75 exam at each visit, add another $325–$975. The same 35 lb dog on half a 16 mg Apoquel tablet would run $531–$616 for a year of daily pills. For a dog needing only a shot or two in peak season, Cytopoint can win.
Which works better? A 2022 review in Veterinary Evidence found insufficient evidence that either Apoquel or Cytopoint is more effective. The atopic dermatitis guidelines (ICADA 2015) say clinicians weigh side effects, ease of use and cost.
Zenrelia vs Apoquel cost
Zenrelia was FDA-approved on September 19, 2024. We couldn't find a published clinic price. At launch, Elanco said its list price was about 20% lower than Apoquel for nearly all dogs; that's the manufacturer's claim, and we haven't verified it. Elanco is also running a 2026 rebate of $7 back per 30 tablets and $21 per 90 on vet-clinic purchases.
The trade-off is vaccines. Zenrelia's boxed warning, revised in 2025, covers inadequate immune response to vaccines: stop at least 28 days to 3 months before vaccination and withhold for at least 28 days after (AAHA, Sept 2025). A 2025 trial of 338 dogs compared it with oclacitinib for up to 112 days: results were similar over days 0–14, and the ilunocitinib group had lower itch and lesion scores from day 28 to 112. More in our Zenrelia for dogs guide.
Numelvi (atinvicitinib) from Merck Animal Health was approved on February 25, 2026 (FDA FOI summary). No price has been published yet.
Is There a Generic Apoquel?
As of October 2026, we found no FDA-approved generic oclacitinib in FDA CVM updates. Apoquel is still brand-only from Zoetis. Price competition comes from the newer drugs above, not a generic.
Does Pet Insurance Cover Apoquel?
Often, if the allergy isn't pre-existing (pre-existing conditions are excluded). Rx handling differs:
- Lemonade covers Apoquel and Cytopoint in its base plan and estimates allergy meds at $50–$300 a month (Oct 2026).
- Embrace covers prescriptions only with its optional prescription coverage.
- Trupanion covers prescriptions but not exam fees.
- Pets Best offers prescription coverage as an option.
MetLife pegs oral allergy meds at about $1–$3 per tablet, so read your policy's Rx terms before you assume the pills are covered.
Rewards and Rebates That Lower the Bill
Zoetis Petcare Rewards gives points on Apoquel purchases at 10 points = $1. A 30-count box earns 70–110 points ($7–$11), a 100-count box 270–410 points ($27–$41), and a 250-count box up to $90. Purchases from your vet or another vendor count, but you have to claim within 30 days. On an $84 box, $7–$11 back is an 8–13% discount.
Between Flares: Skin Barrier and Nutrition Alongside Your Vet's Plan
Nutrition won't replace a prescription, but it's part of most long-term allergy plans.
- Fish oil is a slow helper, not a rescue. ICADA 2015 says essential fatty acids aren't useful for acute flares, benefit can take about 2 months, and they may allow a reduction of steroid or ciclosporin doses.
- A small study added fish oil to oclacitinib. In Schäfer and Thom (2024), 22 atopic dogs on oclacitinib got fish oil or placebo for 16 weeks. In the fish-oil group, the oclacitinib dose went from 0.51 to 0.19 mg/kg/day, versus a non-significant change with placebo. Doses were adjusted per protocol, under supervision; it tested fish oil in general, not our product. Any dose change is your vet's call.
- Dose matters. The Merck Veterinary Manual lists fish oil EPA + DHA at 65–90 mg/kg/day and notes no combination has been shown superior.
- Thinner evidence elsewhere: quercetin has no controlled canine trial alone, and ICADA found insufficient evidence for oral probiotics.
If you haven't pinned down triggers, our dog allergy testing guide walks through the options, and our vet-informed guide to stopping itching covers what to try at home and what needs a vet.
Why Pure Majesty Pets Allergy Chews Fit Between Vet Visits

- Phytoceramides and biotin to help maintain the skin barrier and coat
- Colostrum, probiotics and prebiotics

Apoquel Cost FAQ
How much does Apoquel cost per month?
At US vet clinics in 2026, Apoquel runs about $2.80 to $3.25 per tablet, or $84 to $98 for 30 tablets. On once-daily maintenance, that is roughly $42 to $49 a month for dogs on half a tablet, $84 to $98 for one tablet, and $168 to $195 for two tablets. Prices vary by region, clinic and dog size.
Is there a generic Apoquel?
As of October 2026, we found no FDA-approved generic oclacitinib. Apoquel is still brand-only from Zoetis. Zenrelia and Numelvi are newer, different drugs, not generics.
Is Cytopoint cheaper than Apoquel?
It depends on your dog. For a 35 lb dog, Cytopoint at $100 to $150 per shot every 4 to 8 weeks comes to $650 to $1,950 a year before exam fees, while half a 16 mg Apoquel tablet daily runs about $531 to $616 a year. A dog that needs only a shot or two per season may spend less on Cytopoint.
Is Zenrelia cheaper than Apoquel?
We found no published clinic price. At launch, Elanco said its list price was about 20 percent lower than Apoquel for nearly all dogs, a manufacturer claim we have not verified.
Does pet insurance cover Apoquel?
Many plans do if the allergy is not pre-existing. Lemonade covers Apoquel and Cytopoint in its base plan, Trupanion covers prescriptions but not exam fees, and Embrace and Pets Best offer prescription coverage as an option.
Can a supplement replace Apoquel?
No. A skin supplement may support the skin barrier and coat between flares, but it does not replace a prescription. Never stop, reduce, or switch a prescribed medication without your veterinarian.
