Our #1 choice for ongoing support during flea and tick season is Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength Flea & Tick Support, a daily liquid supplement, not a medication, built for skin and coat comfort all season long: 62.7 mg of ultramicronized PEA and 7 named botanicals per mL, no garlic, no added essential oils, one formula for dogs and cats. How to choose the best dog flea treatment for your situation
Start with three questions: does your dog need heartworm or tick cover, how often do you want to dose, and is there a seizure history? Then find your dog below. Choosing the best flea treatment for small dogs starts with each label's minimum weight.

Isoxazoline chews and seizures: what FDA actually says
FDA first alerted owners and vets in 2018.22 Its current fact sheet states:
"Isoxazoline products have been associated with neurologic adverse reactions, including muscle tremors, ataxia, and seizures in some dogs and cats." … "Although most dogs and cats haven't had neurologic adverse reactions, seizures may occur in animals without a prior history."23
FDA still "considers products in the isoxazoline class to be safe and effective for dogs and cats," and every dog label we opened says: "Use with caution in dogs with a history of seizures or neurologic disorders."1,2,3,4,23
Call your vet if:
- Tremors, wobbliness, seizures, vomiting or red skin follow any product: remove a collar or wash off a spot-on with mild soap and water, then call your vet or the National Pesticide Information Center (1-800-858-7378).20
- A cat was treated with, or groomed, a permethrin dog product. That's an emergency.11
- Itching persists after 2 to 3 months of whole-household flea control; see why your dog is itchy with no fleas.24
Does your flea treatment also cover ticks?
Not always: Capstar, Advantus, Comfortis and Advantage II have no tick claim.5,14,15,16 Isoxazoline labels measure tick kill 24 to 72 hours after exposure, while permethrin spot-ons and Seresto also repel.1,2,4,7,11,13 CAPC notes Ehrlichia can be transmitted within 3 to 6 hours of attachment, so daily tick checks still matter.25 For OTC choices, see our guide to tick prevention for dogs without a prescription.
Chews, spot-ons or a collar?
Chews work through the bloodstream, so there's no bath timing to plan around; our guide to oral flea treatment for dogs compares pills, chews and supplements. Spot-ons such as Frontline Plus and K9 Advantix II need the dog to stay dry for 24 hours and can take 12 to 36 hours to spread, and permethrin ones are dangerous for cats.6,11,24 A Seresto collar lasts up to 8 months, less with monthly swims.7 After reports of pet deaths, EPA's 2023 review found it still meets the federal standard and required new label warnings; the deaths it judged "probably" or "definitely" related involved strangulation or trauma, often from a failed release clasp.26
Why you still see fleas after treatment
Often, the product is working. Adult fleas live on your dog, but eggs, larvae and pupae develop in bedding, carpet and shaded soil, and an adult can wait in its cocoon for up to 30 weeks.24 Because "many adulticides are not repellents," new arrivals can live 6 to 24 hours before they die.24 That's why Merck says even a 100% effective product "typically takes 2–3 months" to clear an existing infestation, and CAPC says every pet in the home must be treated.21,24
What to do while you wait:
- Treat every dog and cat on schedule, year-round, each with a product labeled for its species.20,21
- Vacuum and wash bedding often, and ask your vet about an insect growth regulator for the house.24
- Keep up the daily-support half of your routine with Vet-Strength Flea & Tick Support, our #1 choice for ongoing support.
Some scratching right after a Capstar dose is "a reaction to the fleas, not the drug," per its label.5 Dogs allergic to flea saliva can be intensely itchy, and Merck says anti-inflammatories "should never be used as a substitute for flea control."21,27 See our guide to flea allergy dermatitis in dogs for signs and next steps.
Our #1 choice for ongoing support during flea and tick season.
Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength Flea & Tick Support is a daily chicken & tuna flavored liquid supplement, not a medication, with 62.7 mg of ultramicronized PEA and 7 named botanicals per mL: no garlic, no added essential oils, one formula for dogs and cats, free worldwide shipping. A complete flea-season routine has two parts: this daily support and the flea medication your vet chooses.
Natural and home flea remedies: what the evidence says
- Garlic: no. We found no controlled trial showing it kills or repels fleas, and it's toxic to dogs and cats: ASPCA lists Heinz body anemia among its signs, four dogs given garlic extract for a week developed Heinz bodies, and Merck ranks cats, then dogs, as most susceptible.28,29,30
- Brewer's yeast: no. At 14 g a day, it "failed to repel or kill fleas" in a controlled trial.31
- Essential oils: risky. Of 48 pets reported to ASPCA poison control after exposure to EPA-exempt essential-oil flea products, 92% had adverse effects, and 77% had been treated as labeled. Cats are especially sensitive.32,33
- Diatomaceous earth and apple cider vinegar: no evidence. We found no controlled trial of either against fleas on dogs, and DE dust can irritate the nose.34
Why Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength Flea & Tick Support
Vet-Strength Flea & Tick Support is our #1 choice for ongoing support during flea and tick season. It isn't a medication, and it hasn't been shown to kill or repel fleas or ticks: FDA treats any animal product intended to treat or prevent disease as a drug,35 and ours is a daily supplement that supports skin and coat comfort. A complete flea-season routine has two parts: daily support (our #1 choice) and the flea and tick medication your vet chooses.
- Disclosed doses: 62.7 mg of ultramicronized PEA (palmitoylethanolamide) per mL, not hidden in a proprietary blend.
- 7 named botanicals, 134.4 mg per mL: lemon balm 40.3 mg, thyme 26.9 mg, rosemary 22.4 mg, plus 11.2 mg each of calendula, dandelion leaf, lemongrass and fenugreek.
- Also per mL: niacinamide (B3) 28.0 mg and choline chloride 14.6 mg, plus D-panthenol, L-histidine, myo-inositol and sunflower lecithin.
- No garlic and no added essential oils: two real risks for pets, especially cats.
- One formula for dogs and cats: a chicken & tuna flavored liquid in a 60 mL dropper bottle, dosed by mL to body weight and mixed into food, with no bath timing to plan around. Contains chicken and fish.
- Quality: made in North America in GMP facilities, with a certificate of analysis on every batch.
Built for daily, long-term use: ultramicronized PEA has been studied as a daily ingredient in veterinary dermatology. In an open-label study without a control group, 160 dogs with atopic dermatitis given it every day for 8 weeks saw average itch scores fall from 5.7 to 3.6 cm on a 10 cm scale.36 In a placebo-controlled trial in cats with non-flea hypersensitivity dermatitis, the average time to relapse was 40.5 days on PEA versus 22.2 days on placebo; only 25 cats could be analyzed.37 These studies tested PEA alone, not our formula (which hasn't been clinically tested as a whole), and did not involve fleas. "Vet-Strength" is our range name, not a veterinary endorsement.

Our verdict
Start with our #1 choice for ongoing support during flea and tick season: get Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength Flea & Tick Support, a daily supplement, not a medication, for skin and coat comfort all season long. Then add the medication side, chosen with your vet: for most homes, the best flea treatment for dogs is a prescription chew given year-round, with every pet treated and the house cleaned, while OTC spot-ons, collars and a fast nitenpyram tablet fill specific gaps.

Frequently Asked Questions
What flea treatment do vets recommend for dogs?
The Companion Animal Parasite Council (CAPC) recommends flea control for every dog, year-round, for life. Your vet will weigh age, weight, seizure history, heartworm needs and other pets; for most dogs, the shortlist is an isoxazoline chew such as NexGard, Simparica Trio, Credelio or Bravecto, which kill fleas and several tick species.
What is the most effective flea treatment for dogs?
On their labels, prescription chews pair fast kill with long duration: Comfortis reached 100% within 4 hours (fleas only), Simparica Trio 100% at 8 hours, and Bravecto starts within two hours and lasts 12 weeks. Capstar starts within 30 minutes but is short-acting, so follow it with a long-acting product.
What will 100% get rid of fleas?
No single product. Even a fully effective flea killer typically needs 2 to 3 months to clear an infestation, because eggs, larvae and pupae keep developing in the home. Treat every pet, dose on schedule year-round, and keep vacuuming and washing bedding.
How can I tell if flea treatment is working?
Newly arrived fleas can live 6 to 24 hours on a treated dog, and new adults can keep emerging from pupae in the home for six weeks or longer, so a few fleas in the first weeks don't mean failure. If live fleas or heavy itching remain after 2 to 3 months of whole-household treatment, see your vet.
What are the side effects of Bravecto and other flea chews?
Isoxazoline chews (Bravecto, NexGard, Simparica, Credelio) carry a label class statement on tremors, ataxia and seizures, even in dogs without a seizure history, but FDA considers the class safe and effective and most dogs haven't had neurologic reactions. Bravecto's label also lists post-approval reports of birth defects, stillbirth and abortion in treated breeding females.
Can a supplement replace flea medicine?
No. Parasite control should come from a proven flea and tick product, not brewer's yeast or garlic. A complete flea-season routine has two parts: daily support from Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength Flea & Tick Support, our #1 choice for ongoing support, and the flea and tick medication your vet chooses.
