Fleas on Cats: Signs, What They Look Like & How to Check

Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength Flea & Tick Support 60 mL amber glass dropper bottle for dogs and cats

Our #1 choice for ongoing support for cats during flea and tick season is Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength Flea & Tick Support, a daily liquid supplement, not a medication, built for skin and coat comfort all season long: 62.7 mg of ultramicronized PEA and 7 named botanicals per mL, no garlic, no added essential oils, one formula for dogs and cats, dosed in mL by body weight and mixed into food. Fleas on cats are tiny, reddish-brown, wingless insects about 1/8 inch long, and you usually find them, or the pepper-like flea dirt they leave, at the base of the tail, along the lower back, on the belly and around the neck. A complete flea-season routine has two parts: this daily support and the flea medication your vet chooses.

It is made in North America (GMP, certificate of analysis on every batch) with free worldwide shipping. Already sure your cat has fleas? Our guide to the best flea treatment for cats compares the options. If a dog shares your home, it needs its own dog-labeled product too, because every pet in the home has to be treated; our best flea treatment for dogs guide covers that side.

Call your vet today if:

  • A kitten or a frail cat with fleas has pale or white gums, seems weak or tired, or won't eat. Heavy flea burdens can cause anemia, and VCA notes that in small kittens this can be life-threatening.
  • A dog flea product reached your cat, or your cat is wobbly, trembling, drooling or having seizures after any flea product. Some dog products contain permethrin, which can cause serious illness and even death in cats.

What do fleas look like on cats?

Most owners expect a crawling bug. More often, you find its droppings.

Adult fleas

An adult cat flea is a tiny, brownish, wingless insect, ranging from about the size of a pinhead to 1/8 inch long, according to the Cornell Feline Health Center. VCA describes fleas as small, reddish-brown and fast-moving, able to jump up to 13 inches. Merck notes that slowly parting the hair often reveals flea excrement or rapidly moving fleas. The flea on your cat is almost certainly Ctenocephalides felis, which CAPC calls the most common external parasite of cats in North America.

Flea dirt and flea eggs

Flea dirt is flea feces: digested blood. Merck describes it as reddish black and pellet- or comma-shaped; in the coat it looks like pepper at the base of the hair. VCA is blunt: if you see flea dirt, your cat almost certainly has fleas.

Flea eggs are pearly white ovals about 0.5 mm long (CAPC). Most drop off the cat into bedding, carpet and furniture, where they hatch in roughly 1 to 6 days (Merck).

Can you see fleas on cats?

Sometimes, but cats hide them well. They swallow many fleas while grooming, which can make flea dirt harder to find (VCA), and very allergic cats can be virtually free of fleas because they groom so much (Merck). A clean-looking coat does not rule fleas out.

Flea or look-alike? The speck test

Found something in the fur? The damp paper towel decides it: flea dirt turns from black to brown and then red when wet.

What you see What it looks like Moves? On a damp white paper towel Usual place on the cat What it means
Adult flea Reddish-brown, wingless, pinhead to 1/8 inch Yes, runs and jumps Don't crush it (that doesn't work, per VCA); drop it in soapy water Base of tail, back, belly Active infestation
Flea dirt Reddish-black specks, pellet or comma shape, like pepper No Dissolves into a reddish-brown smear At skin level on the neck, rump and belly Fleas are feeding on your cat
Flea egg Pearly white oval, about 0.5 mm No Stays white Rarely on the cat; mostly in bedding Eggs are already in your home
Dandruff or dry skin White, flat, irregular flakes No Stays white, no color Anywhere, often the back Not a flea sign on its own
Scab crumbs Dark red-brown, irregular bits No Can also stain red, because a scab is partly dried blood; flea dirt is the one with the neat pellet or comma shape Where the cat scratches or overgrooms A scratching sign; check for flea allergy
Dark debris inside the ear Dark, waxy or crumbly material in the ear canal No Not a useful test Inside the ears Not flea dirt; ask your vet to examine the ears
Litter dust or grit Gray or tan, gritty, irregular No Stays gray or tan, no red Paws, belly, hind legs Not a flea sign

Signs of fleas on cats

VCA notes that many cats live with fleas but show minimal signs, so the clues can be quiet.

Early signs of fleas on cats

Fleas on cats symptoms on the skin

Cats allergic to flea saliva have flea allergy dermatitis (FAD), where a single bite can cause itching for several days (VCA). The classic sign is miliary dermatitis: tiny crusty bumps that look like millet seeds and are often felt before they are seen, mostly on the lower back, tail base, face, neck and belly. Others: hair loss from overgrooming, often at the base of the tail (VCA), small scabs around the head and neck, and, in some cats, eosinophilic plaques or indolent ulcers (Merck).

Other allergies and parasites can look the same, so the vet's exam matters. If a dog in the same home is also scratching at its lower back and tail base, read our guide to flea allergy dermatitis in dogs.

Hidden clues: tapeworm segments and bites on your ankles

Cats get the tapeworm Dipylidium caninum by swallowing an infected flea while grooming; the segments look like grains of rice or cucumber seeds on fresh stool or near the anus (VCA). A dog that swallows an infected flea can pass the same segments; our guide to worms in dog poop shows what to look for. And itchy bites on your ankles often mean fleas in the house. If you also have a dog, our article on what flea bites look like on dogs helps you check it for the same infestation.

How to check your cat for fleas in 5 minutes

  1. Set up a white surface. Put your cat on a white towel, pillowcase or a large sheet of paper, as iCatCare and Cornell suggest.
  2. Get a fine-toothed flea comb and a bowl of soapy water. VCA advises against crushing fleas between your fingers because that won't work; drop them in the water.
  3. Comb from tail to head, parting the fur as you go so you can see the skin.
  4. Do the paper towel test. Tap any dark specks onto a damp white paper towel and wait a minute. Merck says flea excrement dissolves, producing a reddish brown color.
  5. Check where your cat sleeps. Look for specks, eggs and larvae in bedding and favorite blankets.
  6. Repeat in a few days if you found nothing but the itching continues.

Where do fleas hide on cats?

Work through the zones in this order.

Order Zone Why check here What you might find
1 Base of the tail (tail head) Cornell names the top of the tail head as a common bite site; VCA lists the base of the tail as a key combing area Live fleas, flea dirt, thinning hair
2 Lower back and rump VCA lists the rump for flea dirt; Merck lists the back as a main FAD site Flea dirt at the skin, crusty bumps
3 Back of the thighs and inside the hind legs Thinner fur makes fleas easier to see (VCA); Merck lists the back of the thighs as an FAD site Running fleas, redness, bites
4 Belly and groin VCA lists the abdomen; Cornell says adults are often seen on the belly Fleas, flea dirt, overgroomed bald patches
5 Neck and behind or under the ears Cornell names the back of the neck as a common bite site; VCA says to comb behind and under the ear flaps Scabs, flea dirt in neck folds
6 Head and face Merck and VCA list the head and face for flea allergy and miliary bumps Small scabs, hair loss on the head
7 Bedding and nap spots Merck and VCA advise checking bedding for eggs, larvae and flea dirt Specks, white eggs, tiny larvae

Where cat fleas come from

Merck notes that even pets that only go outside for brief periods can become infested, and wild animals and strays bring fleas into yards; a dog can carry them in, too. VCA adds that carpets and central heating give fleas ideal year-round conditions.

A flea starts feeding within about 5 minutes and laying eggs within 24 to 48 hours; one female can produce up to 50 eggs a day. A fully developed adult can wait inside its cocoon for up to 30 weeks, and in a normal home the cycle takes 3 to 8 weeks (Merck). Most of an infestation lives in your home as eggs, larvae and pupae, not on the cat.

Are fleas on cats dangerous?

For most healthy adult cats, fleas are an itchy, fixable problem. Three situations are serious.

People are affected too. Cat scratch disease bacteria can be carried by fleas and reach people through a scratch contaminated with flea feces (CDC). Cat fleas also spread flea-borne typhus, and the CDC's first prevention step is keeping fleas off your pets. CAPC adds that the cat flea is the only currently defined biological vector of Rickettsia felis.

Watch, book or call today: a triage matrix

What you found Level What to do
Itching or overgrooming, but the comb check finds nothing Watch Recheck in a few days over white paper. If the itch continues, book a visit; Merck notes the vet may use the response to flea control as the test.
Flea dirt or a live flea on a healthy adult cat that is eating and playing Book (routine) Ask your vet for a cat-labeled product, treat every pet in the home, and start on bedding and carpets.
Fleas on a kitten Book promptly Many products have a minimum age and weight; the fast flea tablet starts at 4 weeks and 2 lb (label). Upgrade to Call today if the kitten is weak or not eating.
Pale or white gums, weakness, tiredness or poor appetite in a cat with fleas Call today Possible anemia, most serious in kittens and frail cats (Merck, VCA, iCatCare).

You found fleas: what to use on cats for fleas

Start with a cat-labeled product chosen with your vet

Make sure any product is labeled for use in cats (VCA); effective options are given monthly or every three months, and the label gives the minimum age or size (EPA). Our flea treatment for cats comparison lines up the classes, the guide to cat flea and tick chewables and oral options covers pills, and what kills fleas on cats instantly explains the fast-acting tablet.

Never use a dog flea product on your cat

Some dog products contain permethrin, and even a very small amount can make a cat seriously ill, including by rubbing against a treated dog (iCatCare). Cats take a long time to break it down (NPIC). Our guide on why dog flea medicine is dangerous on cats lists the warning signs. Choosing a product for a dog that lives with cats? Our safest flea treatment for dogs guide covers homes with cats, and the oral flea treatment for dogs guide covers pills and chews, which leave nothing on the coat for a cat to rub against.

Treat every pet and the home

CAPC says every pet in the home must be treated. Vacuum meticulously (Cornell), treat soft furnishings and carpet pile (iCatCare), and wash bedding often. Control can take 2 to 3 months (Merck). If your dog keeps scratching while the household is being treated, read dog still itching after flea treatment.

A dog that lives with your cat has its own daily routine, too. If that dog has seasonal or year-round itchy skin, our Dog Allergy Relief & Itchy Skin Chews ($49.99) are a daily soft chew for skin, coat and immune support, with wild salmon and sardine oils, quercetin, phytoceramides and biotin, given by the dog's weight. For the dog's coat, Liquid Collagen for Dogs ($31.99) is a daily liquid for joint, skin and coat support, made with hydrolyzed type I and III collagen peptides, undenatured type II collagen, salmon oil and hyaluronic acid. Both are made for dogs, not cats, and the dog still needs its own flea medication from your vet.

What about DIY and “natural” products?

In a review of reactions to essential-oil flea products, 92% of the cats had at least one adverse effect (Genovese 2012). Our guide to home remedies for fleas on cats sorts what helps from what to avoid. Essential-oil products sold for dogs are a risk to a cat that grooms or sleeps beside the dog, so check the dog's routine too with our guide to natural flea treatment for dogs.

How to prevent fleas on cats

CAPC says all cats should be treated year-round and throughout their life, calling it the most practical and medically sound approach. In practice:

  • Keep every cat and dog on a vet-chosen, species-labeled product, on schedule, all year.
  • Comb your cat weekly over a white towel.
  • Wash bedding and vacuum where pets sleep.
  • Ask your vet about ticks if your cat goes outdoors. If you also have a dog, choose its tick product with the cat in mind (some contain permethrin); see tick prevention for dogs.
  • Deworm for tapeworm when your vet advises, and treat a dog that shares the fleas as well; see choosing a dewormer for dogs.

Why Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength Flea & Tick Support

Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength Flea & Tick Support is a daily liquid supplement, not a medication, built for a simple, transparent skin and coat routine.

  • Every dose on the label. 62.7 mg of ultramicronized palmitoylethanolamide (PEA) per mL, plus 7 named botanicals with their doses: lemon balm 40.3 mg, thyme 26.9 mg, rosemary 22.4 mg, calendula 11.2 mg, dandelion leaf 11.2 mg, lemongrass 11.2 mg and fenugreek 11.2 mg per mL, plus niacinamide (B3) 28.0 mg and choline chloride 14.6 mg.
  • No garlic, no added essential oils. Garlic is toxic to cats and dogs (ASPCA, Merck), and 36 of the 39 cats in the essential-oil review above had adverse effects.
  • One formula, measured by weight. For dogs and cats, in mL, mixed into food; chicken and tuna flavor (contains chicken and fish).
  • Made in North America, GMP, COA on every batch, free worldwide shipping.

Built for daily, long-term use. In an open-label study with no control group, 160 dogs with atopic dermatitis received PEA every day for 8 weeks, and owner-rated itch fell from 5.7 to 3.6 cm on a 10 cm scale (Noli 2015). In a placebo-controlled trial in cats with allergic dermatitis not caused by fleas, cats whose skin was first brought into remission with a steroid course went a mean of 40.5 days before relapse on PEA versus 22.2 days on placebo; 25 of the 57 cats enrolled could be analyzed (Noli 2019). Both studies tested PEA alone, not our formula, and neither involved fleas.

Our formula hasn't been shown to kill or repel fleas or ticks, and it does not replace the cat-labeled flea medication your vet recommends. Vet-Strength is our range name, not a standardized veterinary grade, veterinary endorsement or approval to treat parasites. One of the botanicals, lemongrass, is listed by the ASPCA as toxic to cats and dogs when the plant is eaten (the listing covers the plant, not a measured extract), so measure in mL and follow the individual serving confirmed by your veterinarian, especially for kittens, cats that are pregnant or nursing, on medication, or with a diagnosed condition.

The bottom line on fleas on cats

Fleas on cats are easy to miss and quick to multiply. Comb over a white towel, run the paper towel test, check the seven zones, and use the triage matrix. Then keep a year-round routine: a cat-labeled medication chosen with your vet for every pet, and daily skin and coat support.

Ready for flea season? Shop Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength Flea & Tick Support, our #1 choice for ongoing support for cats during flea and tick season: a daily liquid supplement, not a medication, with 62.7 mg PEA and 7 named botanicals per mL. $31.99 for 60 mL, free worldwide shipping.

Fleas on cats: FAQ

Can you see fleas on cats?

Often, yes. Adult fleas are reddish-brown, about 1/8 inch long and fast-moving. Many cats groom them away, so flea dirt that turns red on a damp paper towel is the more common find.

Where do fleas hide on cats?

Check the base of the tail, lower back, back of the thighs, belly and groin, neck and behind the ears. Bedding holds eggs, larvae and flea dirt too.

What are the early signs of fleas on cats?

Scratching more than usual, extra licking or chewing over the lower back and tail base, dark specks in bedding, and bites on your ankles. Some cats show almost no signs.

Can my cat have fleas if I can't find any?

Yes. Cats swallow many fleas while grooming. If itching continues, repeat the comb check and see your vet, who may use the response to flea control as the test.

Can humans get fleas from cats?

Cat fleas bite people, often on the ankles, when animals are unavailable. Flea feces can carry cat scratch disease bacteria, and cat fleas spread flea-borne typhus, so the CDC advises keeping fleas off your pets.

Do I have to treat my house if my cat has fleas?

Yes. Most of an infestation lives in bedding, carpet and furniture as eggs, larvae and pupae. Vacuum, wash bedding, treat every pet, and expect control to take 2 to 3 months.

Can I use my dog's flea treatment on my cat?

No. Some dog products contain permethrin, which can kill cats, even through contact with a treated dog. Use only cat-labeled products and call your vet right away if a dog product reached your cat.

Is Pure Majesty Pets Flea & Tick Support a flea treatment?

No. It is a daily liquid supplement for skin and coat comfort, not a medication; fleas are handled by the cat-labeled medication your vet chooses. Ask your vet to confirm your cat's serving.
