Short answer: CBD for dogs is a hemp-derived oil given by mouth, usually mixed into food. Small studies suggest it may help some dogs with osteoarthritis feel more comfortable and, alongside prescribed medicine, some dogs with epilepsy. The evidence for anxiety is weak and mixed, and no CBD product is FDA-approved for animals, so start with your veterinarian. If you decide to try it, pick an oil that prints every cannabinoid in mg per mL and comes with a batch COA, like Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil for Dogs (60 mg per mL, $31.99, free worldwide shipping). Below: what the dog research shows, how to use CBD step by step with amounts in mL, the safety points that matter, and how to choose a bottle.

- Every cannabinoid printed per mL: 30 mg CBD + 25 mg CBDA + 5 mg CBG (60 mg/mL), so the dose math takes one division.
- Made from isolates with no intentionally added THC, made in the USA, with ingredients tested by U.S. labs and a certificate of analysis (COA) for every batch.
- Measured in mL: about 0.83 mL per dose for a 55 lb dog at the amount most studies used, roughly $0.89 a day.
- MCT oil base with sunflower lecithin and mixed tocopherols, plus a bacon flavor dogs take from a spoon or mixed into food.
What Is CBD for Dogs?
CBD (cannabidiol) is one of many compounds made by the hemp plant. Under U.S. law, hemp is cannabis with no more than 0.3% delta-9 THC by dry weight, and that is the plant material behind legitimate CBD products for pets.18 Most research in dogs uses an oil swallowed once or twice a day, which is why oils dosed in mL are the format this guide focuses on.
Three label terms trip owners up:
- Hemp seed oil is not CBD oil. Seed oil is a nutritious fat with almost no cannabinoids. Our hemp oil vs CBD oil comparison shows the 30-second label check that tells them apart.
- CBDA is the raw, acidic form of CBD. Several dog trials used CBD and CBDA together, and the CBDA for dogs guide explains what those studies did and did not measure. CBG is a smaller companion cannabinoid.
- Full spectrum, broad spectrum and isolate describe how an extract is made. No head-to-head trial has compared them in dogs, and the full-spectrum vs isolate breakdown covers what the studies used. Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil is built from isolates, so there is no intentionally added THC.
What Does the Research Say About CBD for Dogs?
Dog research on CBD is real but small. Most trials enrolled 10 to 50 dogs, several were funded or supplied by CBD makers, and none tested our finished formula. We cite the studies for what they show about CBD, CBDA and CBG as ingredients, not as proof for any single bottle. Here is where the evidence stands as of October 2026.
| Reason owners ask | What the dog studies found | How strong is it? |
|---|---|---|
| Osteoarthritis and joint comfort | In small placebo-controlled trials, owners and veterinarians scored pain lower and activity higher with a CBD/CBDA oil at about 2 mg/kg twice daily (16 dogs)1 and with a CBD isolate at about 1.2 mg/kg a day (20 dogs).2 Two other trials found no difference from placebo, including 41 dogs after knee surgery.3,4 A 2024 trial in dogs with mobility disorders, most with arthritis, used about 10 mg/kg a day for 45 days and improved some owner-rated and veterinarian-rated measures but not objective gait analysis.5 | Low to moderate. The owner-reported signal is the most consistent finding in canine CBD research. A 2023 review of five studies (117 dogs) rated the overall certainty "very low."6 |
| Epilepsy (as an add-on) | Given with prescribed anti-seizure drugs, CBD lowered seizure counts on average in small trials.7 In one 51-dog trial, seizure days fell about 24% versus a 6% rise on placebo, but the share of dogs with at least half as many seizures was not significantly different.9 In a 14-dog crossover trial, 6 dogs responded on CBD/CBDA versus none on placebo.8 | Low. A 2025 review of three randomized trials concluded no firm conclusion was possible.10 Never a replacement for seizure medicine. |
| Anxiety and fear | Mixed. A fireworks-fear trial found no calming effect (16 dogs, one week of low-dose CBD).11 Studies of healthy lab dogs funded by a pet-food company found effects on some stress measures during car travel and separation,12 while a trial in healthy colony dogs found no change in anxiety-related behaviors.13 | Low. Results depend on the stressor, the dose and the dogs studied. |
| Itchy skin (atopic dermatitis) | In 29 dogs, CBD/CBDA at about 2 mg/kg twice daily for 28 days lowered owner-rated itch versus placebo, while skin lesion scores did not change.14 | Low. One small controlled trial. |
| Safety in healthy dogs | Beagle and lab-dog studies of 90 days to 36 weeks at roughly 4 to 10 mg/kg a day found CBD generally well tolerated. The most common lab change was a rise in alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and soft stool appeared at the highest amount.15,16,17 | Moderate for healthy adult dogs studied. Limited for dogs with other illnesses. |
| Cancer, appetite, nausea | We found no dog trials showing that CBD treats cancer or improves appetite or nausea. | None. |
Joint pain and mobility
This is where owners most often try CBD, and it is where the research is most encouraging. Our guide to CBD for dog pain walks through four studies with the dose chart in mL, and the CBD oil for arthritis guide covers five trials and the monthly cost. If you are still sorting out the cause of the limp, start with what you can safely give a dog for pain, then add comfort basics from helping a dog with arthritis at home.
CBD is one tool in a plan, not the whole plan. Ingredient-by-ingredient evidence for nutritional support sits in the joint supplement guide, and many owners pair CBD with structural support such as liquid collagen for dogs or Hip & Joint Chews. If your dog already takes gabapentin, read CBD vs gabapentin for dogs before combining them, and do not reduce prescribed pain medicine because a bottle of CBD arrived.
Seizures
The studies above tested CBD as an add-on to anti-seizure drugs, never as a replacement. The CBD for dog seizures guide breaks down the three veterinary trials. Keep following your veterinarian's seizure plan, and treat a seizure emergency as an emergency, not a reason to wait for an oil to work.
Anxiety and stress
Fear of storms, being left alone and general nervousness are different problems with different tools. The CBD for dog anxiety guide sorts the studies by situation, and the broader dog anxiety supplement guide puts CBD next to the other options. For a gentler, non-cannabinoid route, see these natural calming remedies for dogs. If bedtime is the issue, melatonin vs CBD for dogs explains why they are different tools, and our Melatonin for Dogs drops cover the sleep side.
Itching, allergies and cancer questions
For itch, the one controlled trial helped owner-rated scratching without changing visible skin lesions; the CBD for dog allergies and itching guide explains the limits. Owners of dogs with a cancer diagnosis often ask about CBD too. The honest answer, covered in CBD for dogs with cancer, is that no trial shows CBD treats cancer, so it should never delay or replace oncology care.
How to Use CBD for Your Dog, Step by Step
- Talk to your veterinarian first. This matters most if your dog takes any medicine, has liver or kidney disease, or has seizures. Ask about a baseline blood panel including ALP, because that value moved in many trials. There are no dog studies in pregnant or nursing dogs or in puppies, and our oil is not intended for them.
- Choose an oil with a printed concentration. You give your dog a volume of oil, but studies report milligrams. The bridge is mg per mL on the label. Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil is 60 mg/mL in a 60 mL bottle.
- Work out the amount. Use the formula and chart below, then confirm with your veterinarian.
- Give it with food, about 12 hours apart. CBD is fat-soluble, so a small meal or a spoonful of food helps, and trials that showed effects mostly dosed twice a day. Measure in mL with an oral syringe, not "a dropper" or a count of drops.
- Start low and give it time. Begin at about half the target amount for the first week, watching stool, drowsiness, drooling and appetite. Keep the same amount for two to four weeks before judging, and write down what you see (how your dog rises, climbs, settles).
- Reassess instead of escalating. If nothing changes after a month at a studied amount, that is a conversation for your vet, not a reason to double the dose.
How much CBD for a dog? The numbers behind the advice
No official dose exists, because no CBD product is approved for animals. The dog trials above mostly used about 2 to 2.5 mg per kg of body weight per dose (roughly 0.9 to 1.1 mg per pound), twice a day.1,7,8 Plenty of consumer guides suggest only 0.1 to 0.2 mg per pound, which is roughly four to nine times lower than the trials, and that gap is one reason owners say CBD "did nothing." One more trap: in several university studies "2 mg/kg" meant CBD and CBDA added together.
mL per dose = (weight in kg × 2 mg) ÷ mg per mL
Example: a 55 lb dog is 25 kg, so 50 mg per dose. At 60 mg/mL that is 0.83 mL, twice a day.
Here is that math done for Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil:
| Dog weight | First week: mL per dose | Study-level: mL per dose | mL per day (twice daily) | One 60 mL bottle lasts |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 11 lb (5 kg) | 0.08 mL | 0.17 mL | 0.33 mL | ~180 days |
| 22 lb (10 kg) | 0.17 mL | 0.33 mL | 0.67 mL | ~90 days |
| 44 lb (20 kg) | 0.33 mL | 0.67 mL | 1.33 mL | ~45 days |
| 66 lb (30 kg) | 0.5 mL | 1 mL | 2 mL | ~30 days |
| 88 lb (40 kg) | 0.67 mL | 1.33 mL | 2.67 mL | ~22 days |
This chart counts all 60 mg of cannabinoids per mL. If your vet prefers to count only CBD plus CBDA (55 mg/mL), the study-level amount is about 9% more oil. Dogs under 11 lb need very small volumes, so ask your vet to help set them. The full CBD dosage chart for dogs adds more weights, the doses each study used, and the five dosing mistakes that make CBD look like it does not work.
What it costs. At $31.99 for 3,600 mg, a study-level amount works out to about $0.36 a day for a 22 lb dog and about $0.89 a day for a 55 lb dog. Free shipping worldwide, with duties and taxes already paid, means that price is what you pay.

Is CBD Safe for Dogs? Side Effects, Liver Enzymes and THC
"Tolerated in a study" is not the same as "safe at any amount at home." These are the points worth knowing, and our CBD safety guide goes deeper on each.
- Common effects: soft stool, drowsiness, drooling and, in some trials, reduced appetite or vomiting.
- Liver enzymes: ALP rose in most trials. Its meaning is uncertain (part of the rise was bone-derived in one study, and others found no sign of liver injury), so vets often recommend blood tests for ongoing use. ALP and ALT ran higher in dogs also taking anti-inflammatory drugs.5,16
- Other medicines: CBD is processed by liver enzymes that handle many drugs, so tell your vet about everything your dog takes, including supplements.
- THC is the real danger. Dogs can show signs of THC toxicity from about 0.3 to 0.5 mg/kg.19 Keep human cannabis products and edibles away from dogs, and call your vet or a pet poison hotline right away if your dog gets into one. Full-spectrum products can carry trace THC, which is why a finished-batch COA matters.
- Who should wait for a vet's go-ahead: puppies, pregnant or nursing dogs, dogs with liver disease, and dogs on seizure or pain medicine.

Is CBD for Dogs Legal?
The FDA states that it has not approved cannabis or cannabis-derived products for any use in animals and cannot ensure their safety or effectiveness.18 Hemp-derived CBD with no more than 0.3% THC is federally legal as a plant material, but state and country rules for pet products vary, and veterinarians' freedom to discuss it differs by state. Check your local rules and talk to your vet before you buy.
Frequently Asked Questions About CBD for Dogs
Does CBD really help dogs?
Research suggests CBD may help some dogs with osteoarthritis feel more comfortable, but results are mixed and the studies are small. Evidence for epilepsy (as an add-on) is low, and for anxiety it is weak and inconsistent. It is a supportive option to discuss with your vet, not a cure.
How much CBD should I give my dog?
There is no official dose. Most trials used about 2 to 2.5 mg per kg per dose, twice a day. With a 60 mg/mL oil such as Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil, that is about 0.33 mL for a 22 lb dog and 0.83 mL for a 55 lb dog. Many owners start at half that amount for the first week, and your veterinarian should confirm the final amount.
How long does CBD take to work in dogs?
In one pharmacokinetic study, blood levels peaked about one to two hours after an oral dose.20 For comfort or itch, owners in trials noticed changes after about two weeks, so keep the same amount for two to four weeks before judging.
Is it okay to give a dog CBD every day?
Efficacy trials dosed daily for 4 to 12 weeks, and tolerability studies in healthy dogs ran as long as 36 weeks. Because ALP often rises, ask your vet whether periodic bloodwork makes sense for your dog.
Do vets recommend CBD for dogs?
Opinions vary. Because no product is approved and the data are limited, many vets are cautious, and some will discuss CBD as an add-on, most often for arthritis. Bring the bottle and the batch COA to the appointment.
Is hemp oil the same as CBD oil for dogs?
No. Hemp seed oil contains almost no cannabinoids. Look for the mg of CBD (and CBDA or CBG) per mL on the label, like the 60 mg/mL on our CBD oil for dogs.
Can I give my dog human CBD products?
We advise against it. Human products can contain more THC, flavors or sweeteners such as xylitol (toxic to dogs), and their concentrations are not set for dogs. Use a product made and dosed for dogs.
Is CBD legal for dogs?
Hemp-derived CBD with no more than 0.3% THC is federally legal as a plant material, but the FDA has not approved any CBD product for animals, and state and country rules vary. Check local rules and ask your vet.
The Bottom Line
CBD for dogs is neither a miracle nor a myth. The research is small and mixed, strongest for owner-reported joint comfort and weakest for anxiety, and the sensible way to use it is with your veterinarian, at a measured amount, in a product you can verify. If you want an oil that makes the math easy, lists every cannabinoid and ships with a COA, Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil for Dogs is built for exactly that: 60 mg per mL, $31.99 a bottle, free shipping worldwide.
