Straight answer: CBD may support calm in dogs during short, predictable stress such as car rides or time alone, and if you try it, Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength CBD Oil for Dogs lets you give the amounts used in the positive studies — 30 mg CBD + 25 mg CBDA + 5 mg CBG in every mL (60 mg/mL), no intentionally added THC, so the studied 4 mg/kg about 2 hours before the event is 1.67 mL for a 55 lb dog, at about $0.89 per dose. The research is honestly mixed: CBD lowered some stress measures during car travel and separation in three studies, while three others found no significant effect of CBD alone versus placebo. Below: all six dog studies side by side, what was found for separation and for fireworks, the dose and timing in mL, and how to combine CBD with training and your vet's plan.

If you are still choosing a brand, our ranking of the best CBD for dogs compares nine oils on mg per mL, THC and cost. This guide answers a different question: does CBD actually help an anxious dog, in which situations, and how should you time it? A dog that trembles in the car or howls when you leave needs an oil you can dose precisely before a specific event, without THC (which can itself cause agitation in dogs), and at an amount that matches what was actually studied. Most "calming hemp" products sold for dogs fail at least one of those tests. This guide shows what the anxiety research found and how to use CBD where it has the best chance of helping.

Dog anxiety research is younger than the arthritis research, and the studies use different situations, doses and products. Here is every controlled dog study we could verify, positive and negative.
| Study | Situation tested | Product and amount | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hunt et al., 2023 (Waltham, UK) | Left alone in a room; short car journey (40 dogs) | THC-free CBD distillate, single dose ~4 mg/kg, about 2 h before | Some stress measures lower than placebo: cortisol during car travel; less whining and calmer behavior ratings when left alone. Heart rate not changed |
| Flint et al., 2024 (Waltham, UK) | Repeated car journeys over 6 months (19 dogs) | THC-free CBD distillate, 4 mg/kg daily | Smaller cortisol rise and less whining and lip licking than placebo at one or more time points |
| Masataka, 2024 (Japan) | Short separation from caregivers (10 dogs, crossover) | CBD 2 mg/kg/day for 2 weeks | All dogs vocalized more when left alone, but the increase was significantly smaller after CBD than after placebo |
| Corsetti et al., 2021 (Italy) | Shelter dogs, aggressive behavior toward people (24 dogs) | Olive oil with 5% CBD, daily for 45 days | Aggression fell within the CBD group, but the difference vs placebo was not significant; other stress behaviors did not decrease |
| Morris et al., 2020 (USA) | Fireworks sound test (16 dogs) | CBD treats, 25 mg per dog (~1.4 mg/kg), for 7 days | No anxiolytic effect; the prescription drug trazodone lowered cortisol |
| Flint et al., 2025 (Waltham, UK) | Car travel (54 dogs, crossover) | CBD treats, single dose 2 or 4 mg/kg; or 2 mg/kg + L-tryptophan + α-casozepine | CBD alone: no significant effect; only the combination blend reduced the cortisol rise. Blood CBD levels varied widely between dogs |
What this means: the positive results came from CBD oil or capsules at about 2–4 mg/kg, given before a defined, short stressor such as car travel or being left alone. The low-dose treat study and the treat study with very variable blood levels found little. So the honest answer is that CBD may support calm during occasional, predictable stress — and that the form, the amount and the timing matter more than the brand name on the bottle. No study has shown that CBD resolves a diagnosed anxiety disorder, phobia or aggression problem.
Honest note: none of these studies tested Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil. Most used research-colony dogs and other companies' products. We use them to explain which forms and amounts were studied — not as proof of a result for any single product.
Which Kinds of Dog Anxiety Have Been Studied?
| Type of stress | Studied with CBD? | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Car travel | Yes — 3 studies | The most consistent signal, with oil or capsules at ~4 mg/kg about 2 h before the trip |
| Being left alone (short separation) | Yes — 2 studies | Less whining or vocalizing than placebo. True separation anxiety needs a behavior plan, not just a supplement |
| Fireworks and thunderstorms | Yes — 1 study, negative | Low-dose treats showed no effect; ask your vet about prescription options for severe noise fear |
| Aggression | Yes — 1 shelter study, not significant vs placebo | Aggression is a safety issue: work with your vet or a veterinary behaviorist |
| Vet visits, grooming, visitors, new homes | Not directly | Similar short, predictable stressors to car travel, but not tested in published studies |
CBD for Separation Anxiety: What Was Found
Two studies looked at dogs left alone. Research dogs given a single dose of about 4 mg/kg were rated less stressed and whined less than placebo dogs when left in a familiar room (Hunt et al., 2023). Pet dogs given 2 mg/kg a day for two weeks still vocalized more when their caregivers left, but the increase was significantly smaller than after placebo (Masataka, 2024). Neither study tested dogs diagnosed with separation anxiety.
In practice: CBD can be one support for calm during short absences — given about 2 hours before you leave — alongside gradual departure training. A dog that panics, injures itself or destroys the house when alone needs a vet or veterinary behaviorist, and often prescription medication.
CBD for Fireworks and Thunderstorms
The only noise-fear study is negative: CBD treats at about 1.4 mg/kg for 7 days did not change cortisol or fear behavior during a fireworks sound test, while the prescription drug trazodone did (Morris et al., 2020). Studied amounts in the positive car-travel trials were almost three times higher, but no study has tested those amounts with noise. For storm and fireworks nights, plan ahead with a safe room, sound masking and your vet's advice; see our thunderstorm and fireworks anxiety guide and our melatonin drops for dogs.
If You Try CBD for Anxiety: 5 Things That Matter
1. A Studied Amount You Can Measure Before an Event
The positive stress studies used about 4 mg/kg as a single dose. For a 55 lb (25 kg) dog that is 100 mg. With a typical 25 mg/mL oil, that is 4 mL — a lot of oil to get into a nervous dog. With Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil at 60 mg/mL, it is 1.67 mL, easy to mix into a spoonful of food.
2. No Added THC
THC is not a calming shortcut for dogs. Dogs are far more sensitive to it than people, and THC toxicosis can cause agitation, trembling, wobbliness, urinary incontinence and heightened sensitivity to sound (Merck Veterinary Manual) — the opposite of what an anxious dog needs. In a 2025 arthritis trial with a THC-containing extract, anxiety was reported more often in the cannabis group (Griebeler et al., 2025). The positive Waltham stress studies used a THC-free CBD distillate. Our oil uses isolated CBD, CBDA and CBG with no intentionally added THC, and every batch has a certificate of analysis.
3. An Oil, Not a Low-Dose Treat
Both treat studies in the table above (Morris 2020; Flint 2025) found no clear effect of CBD alone, and the 2025 study noted that blood CBD levels varied widely between dogs. A measured oil lets you match the dose to your dog's weight and keep it consistent. We compare formats in more detail in our CBD dosage chart for dogs in mL.
4. Every Cannabinoid Listed per mL
"Calming hemp" chews often list hemp seed powder or "hemp extract" without any mg of CBD. You cannot dose what is not on the label. Our label lists 30 mg CBD, 25 mg CBDA and 5 mg CBG per mL. CBDA is included because it reached serum levels 2–3 times higher than CBD after oral dosing in a Cornell pharmacokinetic study (Wakshlag et al., 2020); it has not been tested specifically for anxiety in dogs.
5. A Price You Can Repeat for Every Car Trip or Absence
Stress events repeat: every vet visit, every drive, every day you go to work. At study-level amounts, a 55 lb dog's dose costs about $0.89 with Pure Majesty Pets. To see how that compares brand by brand, use our best CBD for dogs comparison.
A study-level calm-support dose for about $0.89
60 mg of named cannabinoids in every mL — so a 55 lb dog needs just 1.67 mL before the car ride.

CBD Dose for Dog Anxiety, in mL
Two patterns were studied: a single dose of about 4 mg/kg roughly 2 hours before a stressful event (Hunt 2023; Flint 2024), and about 2 mg/kg a day for ongoing routines (Masataka 2024). With Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil at 60 mg of total cannabinoids per mL, that looks like this. Try the dose on a calm day first to see how your dog responds, and let your veterinarian confirm the amount — especially if your dog takes any medication.
| Dog weight | Daily routine (2 mg/kg) | Before an event (4 mg/kg, ~2 h before) |
|---|---|---|
| 10 lb (4.5 kg) | 0.15 mL | 0.3 mL |
| 22 lb (10 kg) | 0.33 mL | 0.67 mL |
| 33 lb (15 kg) | 0.5 mL | 1 mL |
| 55 lb (25 kg) | 0.83 mL | 1.67 mL |
| 88 lb (40 kg) | 1.33 mL | 2.67 mL |
| 110 lb (50 kg) | 1.67 mL | 3.33 mL |
Transparency note: the studies dosed CBD alone; this table uses our oil's 60 mg/mL of total cannabinoids (CBD + CBDA + CBG). Measure with a graduated oral syringe, not "a dropper." Why 2 hours? After an oral dose, CBD peaked in dogs' blood about 1.5–2 hours later (Gamble et al., 2018), which is why the Waltham studies dosed about 2 hours before travel.
CBD Works Best Inside a Calm Plan, Not Instead of One
The 2015 AAHA behavior management guidelines place behavior modification and environmental management at the center of anxiety care, with medication added when a dog needs it. CBD fits as one support within that plan:
- Find the trigger. Car, departures, noise, strangers? Write down what happens just before your dog panics. Targeted training works on a known trigger.
- Desensitize in small steps. Sit in the parked car, then drive to the end of the street; leave for 30 seconds, then a minute. Pair each step with food your dog loves.
- Use CBD for the predictable moments — about 2 hours before the trip, the visitor or the vet appointment — at a measured, studied amount.
- For sleep and storm nights, many owners prefer our melatonin drops for dogs; compare both in our guide to melatonin vs CBD for dogs and our thunderstorm and fireworks anxiety guide. Ask your vet before combining products.
- Talk to your vet about prescription options for severe or daily anxiety — several are approved for separation anxiety and noise aversion in dogs. Our overview of calming meds for dogs explains the categories. Never stop a prescribed medication or swap it for CBD on your own.
See a vet promptly if anxiety is new or sudden (pain and illness can look like anxiety), if your dog injures itself, destroys doors or crates, stops eating, or shows aggression.
5 Mistakes Owners Make With CBD for Anxiety
- Giving it as the fireworks start. Studies dosed about 2 hours ahead. Plan the dose before the event.
- Using a few drops of a weak oil. The negative fireworks study used about 1.4 mg/kg; the positive car studies used about 4 mg/kg.
- Choosing full-spectrum "for a stronger effect." THC can cause agitation and wobbliness in dogs.
- Testing it for the first time on the worst day. Try the dose at home on a quiet day and watch for drowsiness or soft stool.
- Expecting CBD to replace training. None of the studies tested CBD as a stand-alone fix for a behavior disorder.
Is CBD Safe for Anxious Dogs?
CBD has been generally well tolerated in healthy dogs, including 4 mg/kg a day for six months (Bradley et al., 2022). The most consistent lab finding is a rise in the liver enzyme ALP; soft stool and drowsiness can occur. CBD is processed by liver enzymes that also handle many drugs, so ask your vet first if your dog takes any medication — including behavior medications such as trazodone or fluoxetine. For the long-term picture, see our guide to CBD oil for dogs with arthritis, which covers daily use in older dogs, and our review of CBD for dog pain. Not for puppies under six months, pregnant or nursing dogs.
Why Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil Fits an Anxiety Routine
- 60 mg/mL — a study-level 4 mg/kg pre-event dose in 1.67 mL for a 55 lb dog.
- No intentionally added THC — isolates, with a certificate of analysis on every batch, in line with the THC-free products used in the positive stress studies.
- Every cannabinoid quantified — 30 mg CBD, 25 mg CBDA and 5 mg CBG per mL.
- An oil you can measure, not a fixed-dose chew — the format used in the positive studies.
- About $0.89 per 100 mg — the lowest cost per mg in our best CBD for dogs ranking.
- Bacon flavor that disappears into a spoonful of food, made in North America under GMP standards, with free shipping.
Red Flags When Buying CBD for an Anxious Dog
- "Calming hemp" with no mg of CBD — often hemp seed, with only trace CBD.
- Full-spectrum oils for small or nervous dogs — trace THC adds up per kg.
- Promises to "fix" anxiety or separation problems — no CBD product is FDA-approved to treat anxiety in dogs.
- No batch COA, or one that does not match your bottle.
- Human CBD gummies — wrong strength, and xylitol is toxic to dogs.
The Bottom Line
If you try CBD for an anxious dog, choose a THC-free, concentrated oil you can give at a studied amount about 2 hours before a predictable stressor, as part of a training and vet plan. The research is mixed but most encouraging for car travel and short separations.
Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength CBD Oil for Dogs was built for exactly that: CBD + CBDA + CBG, all quantified, 60 mg/mL, no intentionally added THC, at under a dollar per dose for most dogs.

Does CBD help with separation anxiety in dogs?
Two studies looked at dogs left alone. A single dose of about 4 mg/kg reduced whining and stressed behavior ratings in research dogs left in a room, and 2 mg/kg a day for two weeks reduced the increase in vocalizing when pet dogs were separated from their caregivers. True separation anxiety still needs a behavior plan with your vet; CBD can be one support for calm during short absences.
Does CBD help dogs with anxiety?
Research is mixed. In three dog studies, CBD lowered some stress measures, such as cortisol, whining or vocalizing, during car travel or short separations. Two studies using CBD treats and one shelter study found no significant effect of CBD alone versus placebo. CBD may support calm during occasional, predictable stress, but no study shows it resolves an anxiety disorder.
How much CBD should I give my dog for anxiety?
The positive car-travel studies used a single dose of about 4 mg/kg given roughly 2 hours before the event. With a 60 mg/mL oil, that is about 0.67 mL for a 22 lb dog and 1.67 mL for a 55 lb dog. A separation study used 2 mg/kg a day. Your veterinarian should confirm the amount.
How long before a stressful event should I give my dog CBD?
About 2 hours. CBD peaked in dogs' blood about 1.5 to 2 hours after an oral dose, and the Waltham stress studies gave CBD about 2 hours before car travel. Giving it as fireworks start is likely too late.
Does CBD help dogs with fireworks or thunderstorm anxiety?
The only fireworks study, using low-dose CBD treats of about 1.4 mg/kg, found no anxiolytic effect, while the prescription drug trazodone lowered cortisol. For severe noise fear, talk to your vet about prescription options. Many owners use melatonin or CBD as part of a wider storm-night plan.
Is CBD oil or CBD treats better for dog anxiety?
The positive stress studies used CBD oil or capsules at about 4 mg/kg. Both treat studies found no clear effect of CBD alone, and blood CBD levels varied widely between dogs. A measured oil lets you match the dose to your dog's weight.
Can I give my dog CBD with trazodone or other anxiety medication?
Only with your veterinarian's agreement. CBD is processed by liver enzymes that also handle many drugs and can raise the liver enzyme ALP. Never stop or replace a prescribed behavior medication with CBD on your own.
