What is melatonin, and can dogs have it?
Melatonin is not a foreign drug. It is a hormone your dog's own body already produces, and its job is to run the sleep-wake cycle — the internal clock that tells the body when to wind down and when to wake. Production rises as light fades and falls as it returns.
That clock can drift. It drifts with age, which is why so many senior dogs get restless after dark. It gets overridden by adrenaline, which is why a thunderstorm or a firework can undo an otherwise settled evening. Supplementing melatonin supports the signal that says the day is over — which is why it is widely used both for sleep and for situational calm.
