Is CBD Safe for Dogs in South Africa? Side Effects, Liver Enzymes & Overdose Facts

Is CBD safe for dogs: Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength CBD Oil for Dogs, isolates with no intentionally added THC and a COA on every batch

Straight answer: yes, CBD is generally safe for healthy adult dogs at the doses used in research — the oil we recommend is Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength CBD Oil for Dogs, with 30 mg CBD + 25 mg CBDA + 5 mg CBG in every mL, isolates with no intentionally added THC and a certificate of analysis on every batch. In controlled studies, dogs given about 2–5 mg/kg a day for 3 to 6 months stayed healthy; the most consistent finding was a rise in the liver enzyme ALP, plus occasional soft stool or vomiting. The real risks come from three places: THC in the product, medications CBD can interact with, and dogs that already have liver disease. Below: every side effect seen in dog studies and how often, what an overdose looks like, the drug interactions to ask your vet about, and what changes for senior dogs.

If you are still choosing a product, our guide to the best CBD for dogs compares six oils sold in South Africa on mg per mL, THC and cost per mg. This guide answers the question owners ask first: what can go wrong? The short version is that a CBD-only oil, measured in mL at a study-level dose, has a well-documented safety record in healthy dogs. A product with THC, a dog on several medications, or a guessed dose changes that picture — so each of those gets its own section below.

What the Safety Studies in Dogs Actually Tested

CBD is one of the few supplements with dedicated safety trials in dogs, several of them long-term and placebo-controlled. These are the studies vets and researchers rely on:

Study Dogs and dose Duration What they found
Bradley et al., 2022 40 healthy dogs, 4 mg/kg CBD once daily vs placebo 6 months Well tolerated; a temporary ALP rise in just over half of the CBD dogs, with no other liver changes and no effect on health and wellbeing
Bookout et al., 2024 32 healthy beagles, 5 mg/kg/day of CBD, CBD + CBDA or CBD + CBG vs MCT oil 90 days Well tolerated in every group; small ALP rises with CBD and CBD + CBDA, only 2 of 32 dogs above the reference range; some drooling in the CBDA and CBG groups
Vaughn et al., 2020 20 beagles, escalating doses of a CBD oil, a THC oil and a CBD/THC oil 10 doses The CBD oil reached about 62 mg/kg with only mild side effects; the THC-containing oils caused far more, including severe wobbliness and lethargy
McGrath et al., 2018 30 beagles, 10 or 20 mg/kg/day CBD (oil, capsule or cream) 6 weeks Diarrhoea in all dogs; ALP at least double the upper limit in 36%; bile acids normal, so no sign of short-term liver damage
Talsma et al., 2024 42 dogs with mobility problems, 5 mg/kg CBD twice daily, with or without NSAIDs 45 days per arm Vomiting or diarrhoea in roughly 10%; ALP rose more when CBD was combined with an NSAID

Honest note: these studies used other companies' CBD products, mostly in healthy adult beagles, not Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil. Several were funded by the industry. They describe the safety of CBD at those doses — not a guarantee for any single product or dog. Bookout et al. is the only one that tested CBD + CBDA and CBD + CBG blends, the same cannabinoids that are in our oil.

CBD Side Effects in Dogs, and How Often They Happen

Side effect How often in studies What to do
ALP rise on bloodwork The most consistent finding: just over half of dogs at 4 mg/kg (Bradley, 2022); 36% at 10–20 mg/kg (McGrath, 2018) You cannot see it at home. For long-term use, ask your vet about baseline and follow-up bloodwork.
Soft stool or diarrhoea Common at high doses (all dogs at 10–20 mg/kg in McGrath, 2018); occasional at study doses Halve the dose, give it with food, and build up over 1–2 weeks.
Vomiting Single episodes in 20% at high doses (McGrath, 2018); about 10% with vomiting or diarrhoea at 5 mg/kg (Talsma, 2024) Give with a meal. Stop and call your vet if it repeats.
Drooling Sporadic with CBD + CBDA and CBD + CBG (Bookout, 2024) Usually brief; mixing the oil into food helps.
Drowsiness or wobbliness Mostly with THC-containing oils (Vaughn, 2020) Wobbliness is a red flag for THC. Stop and call your vet.

Put simply: the side effects of CBD in dogs are mostly digestive and dose-related, and the lab finding vets watch is ALP. In Bradley's six-month study, the ALP rise came without changes in other liver markers, and part of it appeared to be bone-derived ALP rather than liver ALP. What it means over years is still being studied, which is why periodic bloodwork makes sense for dogs on CBD every day.

Can a Dog Overdose on CBD?

A dog can get too much, but CBD itself has a wide margin in the research. In the dose-escalation study, healthy beagles reached about 62 mg/kg of CBD — roughly 30 times the 2 mg/kg used in most dog studies — with only mild side effects (Vaughn et al., 2020). The same study showed where the real danger is: the oils containing THC caused 2.6 times more side effects than the CBD oil, and the CBD/THC group had to stop early after severe wobbliness and lethargy.

What that means in practice:

  • Too much CBD-only oil usually shows up as soft stool, vomiting, drooling or sleepiness. Call your vet and skip the next dose.
  • THC poisoning looks different: the most common signs are lethargy, wobbliness and vomiting, along with dribbling urine, dilated pupils and sensitivity to motion and sound (Merck Veterinary Manual). This happens with human edibles and THC-containing products, and it needs a vet the same day.
  • A chewed-open bottle is a different situation from a measuring mistake. A whole 60 mL bottle of our oil holds 3,600 mg of cannabinoids — far above anything tested in a 25 kg dog. Call your vet or an emergency vet clinic right away and keep the bottle for the label.
  • Human gummies and treats add their own risks: xylitol and chocolate are toxic to dogs regardless of the CBD.

Most dosing mistakes come from treating "a dropper" as a dose. With a 60 mg/mL oil, a 25 kg (55 lb) dog needs about 0.83 mL for a 2 mg/kg dose — less than a full dropper. Our CBD dosage chart for dogs gives the mL for every weight.

Drug Interactions: Tell Your Vet Before You Start

CBD is processed in the liver by the same cytochrome P450 enzymes that handle many veterinary drugs, so it can change how those drugs are processed. The dog data so far:

  • NSAIDs (carprofen, meloxicam, grapiprant and others): in dogs with mobility problems, ALP rose more on CBD plus an NSAID than on CBD alone, and ALT rose compared with the NSAID alone (Talsma et al., 2024). Several dogs that were checked further had liver changes such as vacuolar hepatopathy on cytology, with no clinically apparent liver damage. If your dog takes an NSAID, your vet may want bloodwork before and during CBD use.
  • Seizure medication: in a trial of CBD/CBDA added to existing treatment, blood levels of phenobarbital, bromide and zonisamide did not change (Garcia et al., 2022). Even so, never adjust seizure medication yourself, and never use CBD in place of it.
  • Everything else — heart medications, steroids, sedatives, gabapentin, trazodone, antifungals — has little or no dog data with CBD. "No data" is not the same as "safe together," so bring the full medication list to your vet.

Our guide to CBD oil for dogs with arthritis covers how CBD was combined with other care in the trials, and our review of CBD for dog pain explains when a vet visit comes first.

Is CBD Safe for Senior Dogs?

Most safety studies used healthy adult dogs — the McGrath beagles were 4–5 years old. Senior dogs are the ones most likely to want CBD for joint comfort, and also the ones most likely to have liver changes or to take daily medication. That does not rule CBD out; it changes how you start:

  1. Bloodwork first. A baseline liver panel tells your vet whether ALP is already high before CBD, which makes any later change easier to read.
  2. Start at half the dose for the first week, then move to the full amount if stools and appetite stay normal.
  3. Recheck. ALP rises appeared within 2–4 weeks in the studies, so ask your vet whether to repeat bloodwork after the first month and then periodically.
  4. Choose a THC-free formula. Older dogs with balance problems are the last ones who need THC-related wobbliness.
  5. Keep the other basics. Weight control, gentle exercise and structural joint support such as our liquid collagen for dogs (462 mg Type I & III collagen + 48 mg UC-II per serving) matter as much as any supplement.

Who Should Not Take CBD Without a Vet's Go-Ahead

  • Puppies under six months, and pregnant or nursing dogs — there is no safety data, and our oil is not intended for them.
  • Dogs with known liver disease or abnormal liver values.
  • Dogs on NSAIDs, seizure medication or any daily prescription.
  • Dogs scheduled for surgery or sedation — tell the clinic they take CBD.
  • Dogs with an undiagnosed problem — sudden limping, seizures, lumps or behaviour changes need a diagnosis before any supplement.

In South Africa, CBD products fall under SAHPRA’s scheduling rules — talk to your vet before you start.

How to Start CBD Safely: a 2-Week Plan

Dog weight Week 1 (half dose, twice daily) Week 2 on (2 mg/kg, twice daily) Cost per day at full dose
4.5 kg (10 lb) 0.08 mL 0.15 mL R2.70
10 kg (22 lb) 0.17 mL 0.33 mL R6.00
25 kg (55 lb) 0.42 mL 0.83 mL R15.00
40 kg (88 lb) 0.67 mL 1.33 mL R24.00

Transparency note: the studies dosed CBD or CBD + CBDA; this table uses our oil's 60 mg/mL of total cannabinoids (CBD + CBDA + CBG). Cost per day is based on R540 per 60 mL bottle in South Africa. Measure with a graduated oral syringe, mix into a small portion of food, and keep a simple log of stools, appetite, energy and anything unusual. If your dog takes medication, let your vet set the amount.

How to Check a CBD Product's Safety Before You Buy

Most CBD safety problems in dogs are product problems, not CBD problems. Before you buy any oil, check four things on the label and the batch certificate of analysis (COA):

  • Total THC — full-spectrum oils can contain up to 0.3% THC. Isolates have no intentionally added THC.
  • Cannabinoids in mg per mL — if the label does not say how much CBD is in each mL, you cannot dose safely by weight. A "hemp oil" with no mg of CBD is probably seed oil; see our hemp oil vs CBD oil for dogs label check.
  • Label accuracy — in the McGrath study, the capsules contained 28–31% less CBD than their label said. A batch COA is how you know.
  • Contaminants — the COA should cover pesticides, heavy metals and residual solvents.

Why Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil Fits Safety-Minded Owners

  • Isolates with no intentionally added THC — the factor most clearly linked to serious side effects in dogs.
  • A certificate of analysis on every batch — cannabinoids, THC and contaminants.
  • Every cannabinoid in mg per mL — 30 mg CBD, 25 mg CBDA, 5 mg CBG — so a half dose is a real number, not a guess.
  • CBD + CBDA + CBG — the same three cannabinoids tested for 90 days at 5 mg/kg in the Bookout safety study.
  • MCT oil with sunflower lecithin, mixed tocopherols and bacon flavour — no added water, glycerine or xylitol.
  • About R15.00 a day for a 25 kg (55 lb) dog at 2 mg/kg twice daily — see how that compares in our best CBD oil for dogs comparison for South Africa.
  • Made in North America under GMP standards, with free shipping, duties and taxes included.

Red Flags That Make CBD Unsafe for Dogs

  • No batch COA, or a COA that does not match the batch number on your bottle.
  • THC above trace levels, or no THC result at all.
  • No mg per mL on the label — you cannot calculate a safe dose.
  • Human CBD gummies, chocolates or edibles — wrong strength, possible THC, and xylitol or chocolate.
  • Claims that CBD can replace medication or cure a disease — no CBD supplement is approved to treat disease in dogs.
  • Wobbliness, dribbling urine or extreme sleepiness after a dose — stop and call your vet.

The Bottom Line

For a healthy adult dog, a THC-free CBD oil measured in mL at a study-level dose has a good safety record: mostly digestive side effects, and an ALP rise your vet can track with bloodwork. The risks rise with THC, with medications such as NSAIDs, with existing liver disease and with guessed doses — and each of those is manageable with the right product and a conversation with your vet.

Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength CBD Oil for Dogs is built around those safety points: isolates with no intentionally added THC, a COA on every batch, and every cannabinoid printed in mg per mL so you can start low and dose precisely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CBD safe for dogs?

For healthy adult dogs, controlled studies at about 2–5 mg/kg a day for up to six months found CBD well tolerated. The most common findings were a rise in the liver enzyme ALP and occasional soft stool or vomiting. Choose a THC-free oil with a batch COA and talk to your vet first, especially if your dog takes medication.

What are the side effects of CBD in dogs?

In studies, the most consistent finding was a rise in ALP on bloodwork. Soft stool, diarrhoea and vomiting occurred mostly at high doses, and drooling was seen with CBD + CBDA and CBD + CBG blends. Wobbliness and strong drowsiness were mostly linked to oils containing THC.

Can a dog overdose on CBD oil?

A dog can get too much, usually causing soft stool, vomiting or sleepiness. In one study, healthy beagles tolerated a CBD oil up to about 62 mg/kg with only mild side effects, while THC-containing oils caused severe wobbliness. If your dog swallows a large amount or a THC product, call your vet or an emergency vet clinic.

Does CBD damage a dog's liver?

Studies consistently show an ALP rise, usually without changes in other liver markers, and bile acids stayed normal in a high-dose study. When CBD was combined with NSAIDs, liver enzymes rose more. Dogs on long-term CBD, especially seniors or dogs on NSAIDs, should have periodic bloodwork.

Is CBD safe for senior dogs?

Older dogs were not the focus of the main safety studies, and they are more likely to have liver changes or take daily medication. Ask your vet for baseline bloodwork, start at half the dose for a week, and choose a THC-free oil. Recheck bloodwork after the first month if your vet advises it.

Can I give my dog CBD with carprofen or other medications?

Only with your vet's approval. CBD is processed by liver enzymes that handle many drugs. In one study, liver enzymes rose more when CBD was given with an NSAID than with CBD alone. Seizure medication levels did not change in another trial, but never adjust prescribed medication yourself.

Is CBD with THC safe for dogs?

THC is a common cause of poisoning in dogs, with signs such as lethargy, wobbliness and vomiting. In a dose-escalation study, oils containing THC caused 2.6 times more side effects than a CBD oil, including severe wobbliness. An isolate oil with no intentionally added THC and a batch COA that reports THC avoids that risk.

Do vets say CBD is safe for dogs?

In South Africa, CBD products fall under SAHPRA's scheduling rules. Talk to your vet before using any CBD product. Many vets discuss CBD with owners and focus on the same points as the research: a THC-free product, a measured dose, possible drug interactions and bloodwork for long-term use.
