Straight answer: the CBD dosage for dogs used in most published studies is about 2 mg per kg of body weight (0.9 mg per lb), given twice a day — and the easiest oil to measure that with is our #1 pick, Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength CBD Oil for Dogs, which lists 30 mg CBD + 25 mg CBDA + 5 mg CBG in every mL (60 mg/mL). At that concentration, a study-level amount is 0.33 mL per dose for a 10 kg (22 lb) dog and 0.83 mL for a 25 kg (55 lb) dog. Most owners start at about half that for the first week, and your veterinarian should confirm the final amount, especially if your dog takes medication. Below: the full chart in mL by weight, the 10-second formula for any bottle, the doses each study actually used, and the mistakes that make CBD look like it "doesn't work."

Search "how much CBD for dogs" and you'll find dose charts in drops, in "servings", in mg per lb that disagree with each other by a factor of five. The reason is simple: a dose is a number of milligrams, but you give your dog a volume of oil. The link between the two is the concentration on the label, in mg per mL — and plenty of bottles don't print it. Get that one number right and everything else on this page is basic arithmetic.

This chart uses the amount most published dog studies used — about 2 mg/kg of cannabinoids, twice a day — with Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil at 60 mg of total cannabinoids per mL. The "first week" column is half the study amount, which is how many owners and vets like to begin.
| Dog weight | Cannabinoids per dose (2 mg/kg) | First week: mL per dose | Study level: mL per dose | mL per day (twice daily) | One 60 mL bottle lasts |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5 kg (11 lb) | 10 mg | 0.08 mL | 0.17 mL | 0.33 mL | ~180 days |
| 10 kg (22 lb) | 20 mg | 0.17 mL | 0.33 mL | 0.67 mL | ~90 days |
| 15 kg (33 lb) | 30 mg | 0.25 mL | 0.5 mL | 1 mL | ~60 days |
| 20 kg (44 lb) | 40 mg | 0.33 mL | 0.67 mL | 1.33 mL | ~45 days |
| 25 kg (55 lb) | 50 mg | 0.42 mL | 0.83 mL | 1.67 mL | ~36 days |
| 30 kg (66 lb) | 60 mg | 0.5 mL | 1 mL | 2 mL | ~30 days |
| 40 kg (88 lb) | 80 mg | 0.67 mL | 1.33 mL | 2.67 mL | ~22 days |
| 50 kg (110 lb) | 100 mg | 0.83 mL | 1.67 mL | 3.33 mL | ~18 days |
How to use it: measure with a graduated oral syringe (a 1 mL syringe marked in 0.01 or 0.05 mL steps for small dogs), not "a dropper", and mix into a small portion of food your dog will finish. For toy breeds under 5 kg, amounts are so small that your vet should help you set and measure them.
A note on how we count: the chart divides by all 60 mg of cannabinoids per mL. If your vet prefers to count only CBD + CBDA (55 mg/mL), the study-level amount is about 9% more oil — for example 0.91 mL instead of 0.83 mL for a 25 kg dog. Small difference, but we'd rather show you than hide it.
The 10-Second Formula for Any CBD Oil
Whatever bottle you own, you only need two numbers: your dog's weight in kg (if you only know it in lb, divide by 2.2) and the oil's concentration in mg per mL (total mg on the label ÷ bottle volume in mL).
mL per dose = (weight in kg × 2 mg) ÷ mg per mL
Worked example: a 25 kg dog (about 55 lb): 25 × 2 = 50 mg per dose. With Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil at 60 mg/mL: 50 ÷ 60 = 0.83 mL, twice a day.
Here is the same 50 mg dose with the bottle strengths owners search for most. All of these assume a 30 mL bottle — if yours is a different size, the concentration changes and so does the answer.
| Label says | Concentration | mL for a 25 kg dog (50 mg) | mL per day (twice daily) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 300 mg in 30 mL | 10 mg/mL | 5 mL | 10 mL |
| 500 mg in 30 mL | 16.7 mg/mL | 3 mL | 6 mL |
| 1,000 mg in 30 mL | 33.3 mg/mL | 1.5 mL | 3 mL |
| 1,500 mg in 30 mL | 50 mg/mL | 1 mL | 2 mL |
| Pure Majesty Pets: 3,600 mg in 60 mL | 60 mg/mL | 0.83 mL | 1.67 mL |
This is why so many owners under-dose without knowing it. A "300 mg" bottle sounds like plenty, but a 25 kg dog would need 10 mL a day to reach the study amount — the whole bottle in three days. Most people give a dropper or two and assume they're done.
What Dose Did the Dog Studies Actually Use?
There is no official CBD dose for dogs: no CBD product is FDA-approved for animals, and the products and amounts used in research vary. But the controlled trials cluster around a clear range. In South Africa, CBD products fall under SAHPRA’s scheduling rules — talk to your vet before you start.
| Study | What was studied | Amount used | What it tells you about dosing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gamble et al., 2018 (Cornell) | Dogs with osteoarthritis | CBD/CBDA oil, 2 mg/kg every 12 h | Better owner-rated comfort and activity scores than placebo; half-life about 4.2 h, which is why dosing was twice daily |
| Verrico et al., 2020 (Baylor) | Dogs with osteoarthritis | CBD 20 or 50 mg per day | Measures improved more at the higher amount |
| Mejia et al., 2021 (Colorado State) | Dogs with osteoarthritis | CBD 2.5 mg/kg twice daily | No difference vs placebo — dose alone doesn't guarantee a result |
| Loewinger et al., 2022 | Itchy dogs with atopic dermatitis | CBD/CBDA oil, about 2 mg/kg twice daily | Lower owner-rated itch scores vs placebo; skin lesions unchanged |
| Hunt et al., 2023 (Waltham) | Stress during car travel and separation | Single dose of about 4 mg/kg CBD | Situational use was studied at a higher one-off amount |
| Morris et al., 2020 | Noise-fear test | CBD-containing chews at about 1.4 mg/kg/day | No effect — a low amount in a chew was not enough in this test |
| McGrath et al., 2019; Garcia et al., 2022 | Dogs with epilepsy, alongside their prescribed medication | 2.5 mg/kg (CBD) or 2 mg/kg (CBD/CBDA) twice daily | Research use under veterinary supervision only — never a substitute for seizure medication |
The pattern: most trials used about 2–2.5 mg/kg twice a day. Lower amounts and small fixed doses in chews tended to show less. That doesn't mean more is always better — it means a few drops of a weak oil is a long way from what was studied.
Honest note: none of these trials tested Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil. They used other companies' products, several of them full-spectrum oils containing traces of THC. We use them to explain the amounts and why our formula pairs CBD with CBDA — not as proof of a result for any single product.
Study-level amounts in under 2 mL a day for most dogs
60 mg of named cannabinoids in every mL — CBD, CBDA and CBG — so the maths above takes seconds, not guesswork.

How Often to Give CBD to a Dog — and When
- Twice a day, about 12 hours apart. In the Cornell pharmacokinetic work, CBD's elimination half-life in dogs was about 4.2 hours, so once-daily dosing leaves long gaps (Gamble et al., 2018).
- With food. CBD is fat-soluble. Mixing it into a small portion of a meal is simple and consistent. Our oil is carried in coconut MCT oil with sunflower lecithin, the kind of base associated with better CBDA uptake in a Cornell study (Wakshlag et al., 2020).
- Timing. Blood levels peaked about 1.5 to 2 hours after an oral dose in the Cornell study. For a predictable event — a car trip, visitors — owners usually give it ahead of time. For joint comfort, consistency matters more than timing.
- How long before judging it. In the osteoarthritis trial, owner scores had changed at the two-week check-in. Keep the same amount for two to four weeks and write down what you see.
Start Low, Build Up: A Simple Two-Week Routine
| Days | Amount | What to watch |
|---|---|---|
| 1–7 | About half the study amount (the "first week" column above), twice daily | Drowsiness, soft stool, drooling, appetite |
| 8–14 | Study amount (about 2 mg/kg), twice daily, if well tolerated and your vet agrees | Same, plus how your dog gets up, walks and settles |
| 15–28 | Keep the amount steady | Note comfort, activity and calm in a simple log to share with your vet |
Don't keep raising the amount on your own. If you see no change after a month at a study-level amount, that's a conversation for your vet, not a reason to double the dose.
Can a Dog Have Too Much CBD?
CBD itself has a wide safety margin in healthy dogs, but "safe in a study" is not the same as "fine at any amount at home":
- Long-term amounts studied: healthy dogs tolerated about 2–5 mg/kg per day for up to nine months (Bradley et al., 2022; Corsato Alvarenga et al., 2024), and Cornell cites safety data at up to 10 mg/kg a day for 36 weeks.
- Dose escalation: when healthy beagles were given rising doses of a CBD-predominant oil up to about 62 mg/kg, most side effects were mild — while the oils containing THC caused most of the moderate and severe reactions (Vaughn et al., 2020).
- The real danger is THC. Dogs are far more sensitive to THC than people; signs can appear from about 0.3–0.5 mg/kg (Merck Veterinary Manual). That is why we use isolated CBD, CBDA and CBG with no intentionally added THC, and why human edibles must never be given to dogs.
- Liver enzyme ALP: the most consistent lab change is a rise in alkaline phosphatase. For ongoing use, ask about periodic bloodwork.
- Medication: CBD is processed by liver enzymes that also handle many drugs. Ask your vet before combining it with anything, especially NSAIDs or seizure medication.
Call your vet if your dog becomes very wobbly, unusually sleepy, dribbles urine, vomits repeatedly, or if a dog has chewed into a bottle or any human cannabis product.
5 CBD Dosing Mistakes That Make It Look Like It "Doesn't Work"
- Dosing in drops or "a dropper." A dropper is a volume, not a dose, and droppers vary. Use mL.
- Reading the bottle's total mg as a dose. "1,000 mg" is the whole bottle. Divide by the mL to get mg per mL.
- Switching brands without recalculating. Going from a 17 mg/mL oil to a 60 mg/mL oil at the same volume more than triples the amount.
- Counting only CBD on one label and all cannabinoids on another. Compare like with like. Our label lists each cannabinoid separately so you can choose either way.
- Relying on small fixed-dose chews for a big dog. A large dog may need several pieces to reach a study-level amount — the noise-fear study that found no effect used chews at a low amount.
What a Study-Level Dose Costs per Day
Dosing correctly only helps if you can keep doing it. At 2 mg/kg twice daily, a 25 kg dog needs 100 mg of cannabinoids a day. With Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil (R540 for 3,600 mg), that is about R15.00 a day; for a 10 kg dog, about R6.00. In our comparison of six oils in the best CBD for dogs guide, the same 100 mg a day cost between R48.17 and R121.33 with the other oils we priced in South Africa, using their own list prices and stated milligrams (checked 8 October 2026). That gap is the main reason owners quietly drop below the studied amount.
Why Pure Majesty Pets Is the Easiest CBD Oil to Dose
- Every cannabinoid printed per mL — 30 mg CBD, 25 mg CBDA, 5 mg CBG. No "hemp extract" mystery number, so the formula above works in seconds.
- 60 mg/mL — study-level amounts in under 1 mL per dose for dogs up to about 30 kg.
- CBD + CBDA — the pairing used in most of the Cornell-led dog research.
- Absorption-minded base — coconut C8/C10 MCT oil with sunflower lecithin, no added water or glycerin.
- Isolates, no intentionally added THC, and a certificate of analysis on every batch.
- About R15.00 a day for a 25 kg dog at study-level amounts, with free shipping.
- Bacon flavour that disappears into food, made in North America under GMP standards.
Many owners of older dogs pair their CBD routine with structural joint support such as our liquid collagen for dogs; for dog-specific comfort research, see CBD for dog pain: what 4 studies show, and if your main concern is sleep or storms, compare melatonin vs CBD for dogs.
Red Flags on a CBD Dosing Label
- No mg per mL anywhere — you can't dose by weight.
- "Hemp oil" with no mg of CBD — likely hemp seed oil, with only trace CBD.
- The same number of drops for every size of dog — studies dosed by body weight.
- No batch COA, or one that doesn't match your bottle's batch number.
- Full-spectrum oil for a small dog at high volumes — trace THC adds up per kg.
- Promises to cure or treat a disease — no over-the-counter CBD product is approved for that in dogs.
The Bottom Line
The CBD dosage for dogs that published research points to is about 2 mg/kg twice a day, reached gradually and confirmed by your vet. The hard part has never been the number — it's turning it into a volume of oil. With a label that lists every cannabinoid per mL, that takes one division.
Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength CBD Oil for Dogs was built for exactly that: 60 mg/mL of CBD, CBDA and CBG, measured in fractions of a mL, at about R15 a day for a 25 kg dog.

How much CBD should I give my dog?
Most published dog studies used about 2 mg of cannabinoids per kg of body weight (0.9 mg per lb), twice a day. With a 60 mg/mL oil such as Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil, that is about 0.33 mL per dose for a 10 kg dog and 0.83 mL for a 25 kg dog. Many owners start at half that amount for the first week. Your veterinarian should confirm the amount.
How do I calculate CBD dosage for my dog in mL?
Multiply your dog's weight in kg by 2 to get mg per dose, then divide by the oil's concentration in mg per mL (total mg on the label divided by the bottle volume). Example: a 25 kg dog needs 50 mg; with a 60 mg/mL oil, that is 0.83 mL.
How much 1000 mg CBD oil should I give my dog?
It depends on the bottle size. A 1,000 mg oil in a 30 mL bottle is 33.3 mg/mL, so a study-level dose for a 25 kg dog (50 mg) is about 1.5 mL, twice a day. In a 15 mL bottle the same label means 66.7 mg/mL and about 0.75 mL.
How often should I give my dog CBD oil?
Most studies dosed twice a day, about 12 hours apart, because CBD's half-life in dogs was about 4.2 hours in the Cornell study. Give it with a small portion of food.
How long does it take for CBD to work in dogs?
Blood levels peaked about 1.5 to 2 hours after an oral dose in the Cornell study. In joint-comfort research, owners noticed changes at the two-week check-in, so keep a consistent amount for two to four weeks before judging it.
Can I give my dog too much CBD?
Healthy dogs in studies tolerated CBD at several times the usual amount, with mostly mild effects such as soft stool or drowsiness, and a rise in the liver enzyme ALP. THC is the bigger danger, so avoid human products. Don't raise the amount without your vet, and call your vet if your dog is very wobbly or sleepy.
Should I count CBD only or total cannabinoids when dosing?
Most Cornell-led trials dosed CBD and CBDA together. Pure Majesty Pets lists 30 mg CBD, 25 mg CBDA and 5 mg CBG per mL, so you and your vet can count either way: using CBD + CBDA (55 mg/mL) means about 9% more oil than using total cannabinoids (60 mg/mL).
