How to Clean a Dog’s Ears Gently at Home in Singapore

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with clean healthy floppy ears — how to clean your dog's ears at home

Cleaning an ear well does not mean cleaning it often. For Singapore owners, the aim is to manage appropriate wax and debris without irritating a comfortable canal. Ask your vet to show the technique and clarify whether your dog needs occasional hygiene, ongoing maintenance or a treatment-specific routine.

Inspect without forcing

Lift the flap gently and look at the visible opening. Redness, swelling, unusual discharge, odour or repeated scratching should prompt advice. If touching the ear hurts, postpone home cleaning until the veterinary team tells you how to proceed. Head tilt, difficulty balancing or severe distress needs urgent assessment.

An ear under treatment may need cleaning, but product choice and timing belong in that plan. Do not assume a cleanser advertised for daily use is appropriate for every inflamed ear or that it can replace prescribed drops.

Set up for cooperation

Choose secure footing and enough space for head shaking. Have a towel, soft pads, the selected cleanser and appropriate treats ready. A calm session in a familiar room may be easier than trying to clean immediately after an exciting swim or grooming visit.

Practise gentle flap handling separately if needed. Never punish movement or squeeze the head to complete a session. If you cannot manage comfortably, ask for a demonstration or an alternative application method rather than improvising deeper access.

Apply, massage, shake and wipe

  1. Read the label and use the amount agreed with your vet.
  2. Hold the flap gently and apply at the opening without inserting the bottle or sealing the canal.
  3. Massage the base lightly while the dog remains comfortable.
  4. Allow head shaking to bring loosened material outward.
  5. Wipe only the visible, easily accessible opening and flap with a soft pad.
  6. Use fresh material for the other ear and finish with a reward.

Do not push cotton buds down the canal, scrape at wax or keep repeating passes until the skin becomes irritated. Cornell’s veterinary guide also warns against forceful pressure from a bottle tip.

A Singapore product comparison

Virbac Epi-Otic III, 125 mL, at Pet Lovers Centre Singapore is a named local maintenance option. Check the exact version, ingredients and current directions instead of borrowing the instructions of a similarly named product sold elsewhere.

Pure Majesty Pets Dog Ear Cleaner is a 120 mL ear-hygiene product described with salicylic acid and conditioning ingredients. Review its full label for suitability. Compare SGD cost, usability and after-opening storage rather than treating “strength” as an efficacy ranking. Neither product should be assumed to treat every ear infection.

Agree an individual schedule

A normal ear may need cleaning only when debris is present. A dog with recurrent problems may need a more structured plan. Discuss baths and swimming specifically; Singapore’s humidity is not, by itself, a reason to flush every ear daily. Excessive cleaning can also cause irritation.

Keep the nozzle away from dirty pads and fur, close the cap and follow the storage instructions. Do not use peroxide, vinegar, household oils or oral supplements in the canal. If discharge returns quickly, arrange reassessment rather than repeatedly increasing frequency. Good maintenance supports comfort, but it cannot guarantee that an underlying allergy or other problem will never recur.
