How to Clean Your Dog’s Ears: A Gentle Malaysian Home Routine

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with clean healthy floppy ears — how to clean your dog's ears at home

A good ear-cleaning routine starts with deciding whether cleaning is needed. A comfortable, normal ear does not automatically require a weekly flush, while an ear that is painful or discharging needs assessment. Malaysian owners can make maintenance easier by learning the technique from their vet and using a schedule matched to the individual dog.

Check before you clean

Gently lift the flap only if your dog is comfortable. Look for redness, swelling, unusual discharge or a marked change in odour. Persistent scratching or head shaking also warrants veterinary advice. If there is pain, stop rather than trying to clean more thoroughly. Head tilt, poor balance or severe distress needs urgent attention.

During treatment for an infection, cleaning may be useful, but the vet should choose the product and timing. Do not assume a maintenance cleanser is compatible with every prescribed ear medicine or appropriate when the eardrum’s condition is unknown.

Prepare a calm space

Have the approved ear cleanser, soft cotton pads or gauze, a towel and suitable rewards ready. Use a stable, non-slip place so your dog does not slide while turning its head. Brief handling practice can help a nervous dog; the first session need not include a complete clean.

Do not chase the dog with a bottle or recruit someone to hold a painful ear rigidly. Ask the clinic for a demonstration if you cannot clean comfortably. A towel is useful because head shaking is expected, not a sign that the routine has failed.

The cleaning sequence

  1. Check the label and use the amount recommended for the chosen product and your veterinary plan.
  2. Lift the flap gently and apply without inserting the nozzle deeply or sealing the canal opening.
  3. Massage the base of the ear gently if tolerated.
  4. Allow the dog to shake out loosened liquid and debris.
  5. Wipe only easily accessible material from the outer opening and flap with a soft pad.
  6. Use fresh material for the other ear and finish with a reward.

Avoid cotton buds inside the canal and do not keep wiping until the skin is sore. Cornell’s step-by-step guidance also cautions against forceful pressure from the bottle and advises stopping if cleaning hurts.

Choosing a Malaysian cleanser

Virbac Epi-Otic Ear Cleanser, 125 mL, at Pet Lovers Centre Malaysia is a local reference. Compare the exact formula, bottle handling, label and after-opening instructions. A similar name on an overseas listing does not establish identical directions.

Pure Majesty Pets Dog Ear Cleaner is a 120 mL hygiene option described with salicylic acid and conditioning ingredients. Review suitability with your vet. Compare delivered RM cost and usability, not a claim that the strongest formula must be best. Neither listing demonstrates that cleaning alone treats mites or infection.

Frequency follows need, not the weather forecast

Ask how to handle baths and swimming in your dog’s plan. Attend to visible moisture and do not automatically increase flushing because a week is humid. Healthy ears may need little cleaning; allergy-prone or treated ears may need a different schedule. Overcleaning can itself irritate the canal.

Keep the bottle capped, avoid touching the tip to dirty surfaces and do not share contaminated pads between pets. Never put oral yeast supplements into the ear. If wax or odour returns repeatedly despite correct maintenance, arrange a review of the underlying cause rather than simply buying more cleanser.
