If your dog keeps scratching an ear or shaking its head, “dirty ears” is not a complete explanation. Malaysian owners may notice a problem after bathing, swimming or boarding, but timing alone cannot distinguish ear mites, yeast, bacteria, allergy or a foreign object. The first decision is whether the ear needs veterinary assessment before any cleaning.
Colour and smell cannot identify the cause
Dark, crumbly material is often associated with ear mites, but wax and infection can create overlapping appearances. A musty smell does not prove yeast, and a yellow discharge does not tell you which medicine is appropriate. Several problems can occur together. Avoid buying drops from a photograph-based diagnosis.
The veterinarian can inspect the canal and eardrum and examine sampled material. These checks help identify parasites or microbial overgrowth and determine which products can safely enter the ear. Cornell’s veterinary explanation describes why the examination matters.
What changes if mites are confirmed?
Ear mites can pass between dogs and cats. Tell the clinic about other pets at home, recent adoption, boarding and shared bedding. An effective plan may need to include in-contact animals even if their ears look less affected. The University of Saskatchewan’s parasite guidance explains this household aspect.
Do not improvise a parasite medicine or use the same product on every species. Your vet should choose an appropriate option for each animal. A cleanser removes material; it is not automatically a mite treatment, antibiotic or antifungal.
Recognise when not to wait
Seek urgent advice for a head tilt, poor balance, severe pain, bleeding or a suddenly swollen ear flap. Contact the clinic promptly for persistent scratching, redness, discharge or odour. If your dog cries or resists handling, do not force a deep clean before the appointment. Ask whether the clinic wants the ear left uncleaned so a sample can be taken.
Prevent further scratching with a suitable protective collar if the dog tolerates it, and avoid swimming until assessed. Do not put vinegar, peroxide, essential oils or leftover prescription drops into an unexplained painful ear.
A Malaysian product comparison for maintenance
Pet Lovers Centre Malaysia lists Virbac Epi-Otic Ear Cleanser, 125 mL. It is a useful local cleanser reference, not proof that every itchy ear can be managed with hygiene alone. Check the current formulation and directions rather than borrowing instructions from a differently named international version.
Compare the RM cost, bottle size, after-opening guidance and whether your vet approves the product for this particular ear. A “vet-strength” phrase should not be read as permission to use more solution or clean more frequently.
Where Pure Majesty Pets fits
Pure Majesty Pets Dog Ear Cleaner is a 120 mL ear-hygiene option whose current formula includes salicylic acid and soothing ingredients. Use it only when cleaning is appropriate and according to the label and veterinary plan. It is not an eye wash or a replacement for treatment of mites or infection.
Once the ear is comfortable, ask the vet to demonstrate gentle cleaning and an individual schedule. Wipe only material you can easily see; avoid cotton buds deep in the canal. After a bath, dry the visible ear gently rather than automatically adding extra cleaning sessions. Repeated episodes also warrant investigation of an underlying skin problem.
