Straight answer: CBDA is the raw, acidic form of CBD that hemp makes first, and if you want it in your dog's routine, the oil we recommend is Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength CBD Oil for Dogs — 30 mg CBD + 25 mg CBDA + 5 mg CBG in every mL, no intentionally added THC and a certificate of analysis on every batch. In beagles, CBDA reached about three times the blood level of CBD at the same dose, and the most-cited dog studies on joints, seizures and itch used oils that combined CBD and CBDA in roughly equal amounts. There is no dog trial of CBDA on its own yet, so the realistic way to use it is the way those studies did: alongside CBD, with food, with your vet in the loop.

If you are still comparing products, our guide to the best CBD for dogs explains how to read cannabinoid labels, research limits and safety checks before you buy. This page answers one narrower question: what CBDA actually adds, and what the dog research does and does not show.

Hemp does not make CBD directly. The plant makes cannabidiolic acid (CBDA), which carries an extra acid group. Heat, and slowly time, knock that group off and turn CBDA into CBD — a step called decarboxylation. That is why most CBD oils contain little CBDA: the extract has been heated on purpose, or the label simply never measured the acid form.
- CBDA is the raw form found in the living plant.
- CBD is what CBDA becomes after heating.
- CBG comes from CBGA, the shared "parent" of both. It is a different cannabinoid, not a stronger CBD.
Hemp seed oil is a third thing again: a food oil pressed from the seeds, with no meaningful CBD or CBDA. Our hemp oil vs CBD oil for dogs guide shows how to tell them apart on a label in 30 seconds.
Why CBDA Gets Attention: How Dogs Absorb It
The most consistent finding in dogs is about absorption, not effect. Three Cornell-linked studies in healthy beagles measured blood levels after oral oils:
- Wang et al., 2025: 8 beagles each received a CBD isolate, a CBDA isolate and two hemp extracts at 1 mg/kg twice daily for a week. Peak blood level was about 236 ng/mL for the CBDA isolate versus about 70 ng/mL for the CBD isolate — roughly three times higher. Full-spectrum extracts were not absorbed better than isolates, and adding CBDA did not raise CBD levels.
- Wakshlag et al., 2020: with a 1:1 CBD/CBDA oil in three formats, CBDA blood levels were 2 to 3 times higher than CBD levels.
- Koll et al., 2026: a CBDA + CBGA hemp extract given for 90 days produced measurable CBDA blood levels, with unremarkable exams and bloodwork.
Two honest limits: a higher blood level is not proof of a bigger benefit, and these were small groups of healthy research dogs. Still, it explains why the oils used in the dog studies kept CBDA instead of converting it all to CBD. For the isolate versus full-spectrum side of the same question, see full spectrum vs isolate CBD for dogs.
Every Dog Study That Used CBDA
No published trial has tested CBDA alone for a health outcome in dogs. Every clinical study used an oil with CBD and CBDA in roughly equal amounts — and, importantly, those oils also contained some THC. None used Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil.
| Study | Dogs | Oil and amount | What was found |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gamble et al., 2018 | 16 dogs with osteoarthritis, placebo crossover, 4 weeks | Equal CBD + CBDA (with 0.24 mg/mL THC), 2 mg/kg twice daily | Owner pain and activity scores improved; ALP rose |
| Klatzkow et al., 2022 | 41 dogs after TPLO knee surgery, 4 weeks | CBD + CBDA, 2–2.5 mg/kg twice daily | No difference in pain or lameness scores |
| Garcia et al., 2022 | 14 dogs with drug-resistant epilepsy, crossover, 12 weeks per phase | 30 mg CBD + 31 mg CBDA/mL (with 1.2 mg/mL THC), 2 mg/kg twice daily, added to seizure drugs | 6 of 14 dogs had at least 50% fewer seizures vs 0 of 14 on placebo |
| Loewinger et al., 2022 | 29 dogs with atopic dermatitis analysed, 28 days | Same type of oil, about 2 mg/kg twice daily | Owner itch scores lower at days 14 and 28; skin lesions unchanged |
| Mills et al., 2024 | 18 healthy dogs, 2 weeks per level | CBD + CBDA at 2 and 4 mg/kg twice daily | No adverse events; mild ALP rise at 4 mg/kg only |
Honest note: these results belong to the products tested, mostly made by one company and studied by one research group. They are not a promised result for any oil, including ours, and CBDA's separate contribution cannot be pulled out of a CBD + CBDA mix.
If you are reading because of a specific problem, each of these has its own guide: CBD oil for dogs with arthritis covers the joint trials, CBD for dog seizures explains the epilepsy data in full, and CBD for dog allergies and itching walks through the skin studies.
What CBDA Does in the Lab (and Why That Is Not Proof)
You will see two lab findings quoted on CBDA product pages. Both are real, and both are a long way from a dog on your sofa:
- COX-2 in a test tube. CBDA selectively blocked the COX-2 enzyme in lab tests (Takeda et al., 2008). COX-2 is the target of many dog pain drugs, but a test-tube result says nothing about dose or effect in a living dog.
- Nausea in rodents. Injected CBDA reduced vomiting in shrews and nausea-like behavior in rats, more potently than CBD (Bolognini et al., 2013). Not dogs, not by mouth.
So CBDA is a reasonable thing to include in a measured oil, but no one can honestly say it does something in dogs that CBD does not.
Is CBDA Safe for Dogs?
In the studies so far, CBD + CBDA oils were generally well tolerated. The pattern to know about:
- ALP, a liver enzyme, can rise. It went up in the arthritis, epilepsy, itch and surgery studies, usually mildly. Your vet may want a baseline blood panel and a recheck.
- Drowsiness and wobbliness were reported in a few dogs in the epilepsy study — an oil that also contained THC.
- CBDA alone at 1 mg/kg twice daily for a week caused no adverse events in beagles, and normal bloodwork was reported after 90 days of a CBDA + CBGA extract.
Our full guide to whether CBD is safe for dogs covers side effects, liver enzymes and overdose in detail.
CBDA and Your Dog's Medications
In dog liver-cell tests, CBD and CBDA were cleared by different routes: CBD mainly by CYP enzymes, CBDA mainly by glucuronidation. Both slowed one step of tramadol breakdown, only CBDA slowed a second step, and neither blocked CYP3A12, the enzyme family that handles drugs like midazolam (Court et al., 2024). These are lab results; the authors called for studies in live dogs. In a 2025 study of dogs with lymphoma, a CBD/CBDA oil did not significantly change blood levels of the chemotherapy drug doxorubicin (Lejeune et al., 2025).
The practical rule is simple: tell your vet before starting, especially if your dog takes tramadol, seizure medication or any daily drug. Never stop or lower a prescribed medicine because you added an oil. If you are weighing CBD against existing pain drugs, our overview of arthritis medicine for dogs explains what your vet is likely to discuss.

How Much CBDA Is in a Study-Level Amount?
The clinical studies used about 2 mg/kg of combined CBD + CBDA twice daily, roughly half of each. Here is that amount with Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil at 60 mg of total cannabinoids per mL, and how much CBDA each dose carries. It is a reference for the conversation with your vet, who sets the actual amount and may start lower.
| Dog weight | mL per dose | CBD per dose | CBDA per dose | Cost per day (twice daily) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 lb (4.5 kg) | 0.15 mL | 4.5 mg | 3.8 mg | $0.16 |
| 22 lb (10 kg) | 0.33 mL | 10 mg | 8.3 mg | $0.36 |
| 55 lb (25 kg) | 0.83 mL | 25 mg | 21 mg | $0.89 |
| 80 lb (36 kg) | 1.2 mL | 36 mg | 30 mg | $1.28 |
| 110 lb (50 kg) | 1.67 mL | 50 mg | 42 mg | $1.78 |
Measure with a 1 mL oral syringe and mix into a small portion of food your dog will finish; the absorption studies gave the oil with food. Every weight, the formula and a first-week half-dose plan are in our CBD dosage chart for dogs.
How to Read CBDA on a Label
- Look for CBDA listed in mg per mL, separate from CBD. "Contains naturally occurring cannabinoids" tells you nothing.
- Do not add CBD and CBDA into one "CBD" number. A bottle sold as "3,600 mg" should show how much is CBD and how much is CBDA. Ours lists 1,800 mg CBD, 1,500 mg CBDA and 300 mg CBG per 60 mL.
- Check the batch COA for CBDA, CBD, THC and THCA. THCA can turn into THC, which is the cannabinoid that makes dogs wobbly and sick.
- Ask how the oil is stored before it ships. CBDA converts to CBD with heat over time; a COA from the batch, not a generic one, shows what is actually in the bottle.
How to Store a CBDA Oil
Cannabinoids slowly change with heat, light and air. In a one-year storage study of cannabis extracts, room temperature caused the biggest changes, while cold, dark storage kept them most stable (Milay et al., 2020). For a CBDA oil at home: keep the cap tight, keep it out of sunlight and away from the stove or a hot car, and use the bottle before its expiry date. A cool cupboard is fine.
Where CBDA Fits in Your Dog's Routine
The CBD + CBDA studies looked at three everyday situations, each covered in its own guide:
- Stiff joints and slower walks — see CBD for dog pain, and compare nutritional options in our joint supplements for dogs guide. Pure Majesty Pets also makes hip and joint chews for dogs.
- Stressful days — CBD for dog anxiety covers what the calm studies used, our complete dog calming and anxiety guide covers training and environment, and melatonin vs CBD for dogs compares two different options.
- Itchy skin — start with our evidence-based guide to dog itching. For the skin barrier side, read why owners compare options in our best collagen for dogs guide; we make liquid collagen for dogs (462 mg Type I & III collagen + 48 mg UC-II per serving).
Ask your vet before combining products, so you can tell what is helping.
What It Costs With Our Oil
At $31.99 for 60 mL, a study-level routine of 2 mg/kg twice daily costs about $0.36 a day for a 22 lb dog and $0.89 a day for a 55 lb dog, with free shipping. One bottle lasts about 90 days for a 22 lb dog and about 36 days for a 55 lb dog. To see how other oils compare on mg per mL and price, see our best CBD oil for dogs comparison.
Why Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil Fits a CBDA Routine
- 25 mg CBDA per mL, listed separately from the 30 mg CBD and 5 mg CBG, so you and your vet know exactly what each dose contains.
- CBD and CBDA together, close to the near 1:1 pairing used in the dog studies. Those studies tested other companies' products; our formula has not been studied in a clinical trial.
- No intentionally added THC — the study oils contained THC; ours is made from isolates.
- A certificate of analysis on every batch for cannabinoids, THC and contaminants.
- 60 mg/mL, so a study-level amount is a small, measurable volume — 0.33 mL for a 22 lb dog.
- Simple ingredients: coconut-derived MCT oil, sunflower lecithin, mixed tocopherols and natural bacon flavor; no added water, glycerin or xylitol.
- About $0.89 a day for a 55 lb dog, made in North America under GMP standards, with free shipping.

Red Flags When Buying CBDA for Dogs
- "Raw" or "CBDA" on the front, but no CBDA mg per mL on the label or COA.
- Claims that CBDA cures, treats or replaces medication — no CBD or CBDA product is FDA-approved for any use in animals.
- No batch COA, or a COA without THC and THCA results.
- Hemp seed oil sold as a CBDA product.
- Human CBD products, which can contain xylitol or flavors unsafe for dogs.
- New vomiting, poor appetite, drowsiness or wobbliness after starting — call your vet.
The Bottom Line
CBDA for dogs is promising on absorption: beagles reach about three times more CBDA than CBD in the blood at the same dose, and the dog studies that included CBDA all paired it with CBD. What is missing is a trial of CBDA on its own, so the sensible approach is the one the research used — CBD and CBDA together, a measured amount with food, and your vet watching liver enzymes and other medications.
If your vet agrees, Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength CBD Oil for Dogs gives you 25 mg CBDA and 30 mg CBD in every mL, no intentionally added THC and a COA on every batch, for under a dollar a day for most dogs.

What is CBDA for dogs?
CBDA (cannabidiolic acid) is the raw, acidic form of CBD that hemp produces naturally. Heat turns it into CBD. Some dog oils keep CBDA instead of converting it, and list it separately in mg per mL.
Is CBDA better than CBD for dogs?
Dogs absorb more of it: in beagles, CBDA reached about three times the peak blood level of CBD at the same dose. But no dog trial has compared CBDA alone with CBD alone for a health outcome, so it is not proven to work better. The dog studies that included CBDA all used it together with CBD.
Is CBDA safe for dogs?
In the published studies, CBD + CBDA oils were generally well tolerated. The most common finding was a rise in the liver enzyme ALP, usually mild. A CBDA isolate caused no adverse events in beagles over a week. Ask your vet about a baseline blood panel, especially for dogs on other medication.
How much CBDA should I give my dog?
The dog studies used about 2 mg/kg of combined CBD + CBDA twice daily, roughly 1 mg/kg of each. With a 60 mg/mL oil containing 25 mg CBDA per mL, that is about 0.33 mL per dose for a 22 lb dog (8.3 mg CBDA) and 0.83 mL for a 55 lb dog (21 mg CBDA). Your veterinarian should set the amount.
Does CBDA get dogs high?
No. CBDA is not THC. Dogs become wobbly or lethargic from THC, which is why you should check the batch COA for both THC and THCA. Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil has no intentionally added THC.
Does CBDA turn into CBD in the bottle?
Slowly, with heat and time. Storage studies show cold, dark conditions keep cannabinoids most stable. Keep the bottle tightly closed, out of sunlight and away from heat, and use it before the expiry date.
Can I give my dog CBDA with other medications?
Ask your vet first. In dog liver-cell tests, CBDA and CBD slowed parts of tramadol breakdown, while neither blocked the enzyme family that handles midazolam. These are lab results, not proof of safety in a live dog. Never stop or change a prescribed medicine on your own.
Is hemp seed oil a source of CBDA?
No. Hemp seed oil is pressed from the seeds and contains no meaningful CBD or CBDA. A CBDA oil should state CBDA in mg per mL on its label and batch COA.
