Dog cataract surgery cost in the UK is set by the referral hospital, not by a national price list, so the only reliable figure is an itemised written estimate. For context, the US guide PetMD cites $2,700 to $4,000 in US dollars; that is not a UK price and should not be converted pound for pound. This guide covers what moves the bill, what to ask, and how to plan.
What drives the price
- One eye or both: bilateral surgery means more theatre time and a second implant.
- Cataract stage: advanced lenses can carry more inflammation and more risk, so earlier assessment matters.
- Pre-operative work-up: the eye exam, an electroretinogram (ERG) to check the retina, and sometimes an ocular ultrasound. If the retina does not pass, surgery would not restore sight.
- Anaesthesia and bloods: older or diabetic dogs often need extra screening.
- Aftercare: eye drops several times a day, a cone and frequent rechecks. PetMD notes success rates of 85% to 90% in uncomplicated cases; complications such as uveitis and glaucoma are treated at extra cost.
Referral, insurance and what to ask
In the UK, your first-opinion vet usually refers you to an RCVS-recognised specialist in veterinary ophthalmology. Ask for the quote itemised: consultation, ERG and ultrasound, bloods, anaesthesia, surgery and lens, medication, and the number of rechecks included. Check your pet insurance carefully: lifetime policies tend to renew cover for ongoing conditions, while time-limited or maximum-benefit policies can run out, and cataracts diagnosed before cover began are commonly excluded. Ask whether the practice offers a payment plan.
Diabetic dogs
Diabetes is a well-known driver of rapid cataract formation; a 200-dog retrospective cohort examined how cataracts develop in diabetic dogs. Surgery is not automatically ruled out, but the diabetes generally has to be well controlled first. Read about uveitis in dogs, the main inflammatory risk, and how a cloudy dog eye differs from a true cataract. Persistent redness or squinting is a reason to see a vet quickly: see dog eye ulcer.
Can drops or supplements replace surgery?
Current research does not strongly prove that any over-the-counter supplement or drop reverses an established cataract. Our dog eye drops for daily eye care are a cleansing product for everyday tear residue only; they do not treat cataracts, and after surgery use only what your surgeon approves.
