What are dog ear mites?
Otodectes cynotis is a tiny surface mite that lives and breeds inside the ear canal, feeding on skin debris and wax. It doesn't burrow; the whole egg-to-adult cycle takes about three to four weeks, all inside the ear.[1] Because it spreads by direct contact, mites are far more common in puppies, litters, shelters, and multi-pet homes — and dogs living with an infested cat often catch them.[1]
The hallmark of mites is intense, out-of-nowhere itch. Dogs scratch and shake hard enough to bruise the ear flap, and the debris left behind is typically dry and dark, like coffee grounds. In one review of 100 dogs with ear inflammation, mites were the underlying primary cause in about 7% of cases — less common than allergies, but a classic trigger in younger dogs.[2]
What is a dog ear infection?
A dog ear infection — otitis externa — is an overgrowth of organisms that normally live in small numbers on the skin, most often the yeast Malassezia pachydermatis or bacteria such as Staphylococcus and Pseudomonas.[2,3] These infections are usually secondary: allergies, swimming moisture, a narrow or hairy canal, or trapped wax change the ear's environment, and the warm, damp canal lets yeast or bacteria bloom.
The discharge tells a story. A waxy, brown, slightly greasy buildup with a musty odor points toward yeast; a moist, yellow-green discharge with a sharper smell suggests bacteria. Why the difference matters: cytology decides treatment
Here is the crux: the two respond to completely different medications. Mites need a parasiticide that kills the mite and its eggs; yeast and bacteria need antifungal or antibacterial therapy. Pour an antifungal into a mite-packed ear and the mites keep breeding; use a mite product on a yeast infection and the yeast keeps growing. Guessing wastes time and lets the ear get worse.

Mites and infections aren't an either/or. How each is treated
For mites, veterinarians use proven parasiticides. Common mistakes to avoid
- Treating for mites without confirming them. Most itchy ears in adult dogs are infections, not mites — a swab prevents treating the wrong problem.
- Only treating the itchy pet. Mites are contagious; skipping other household animals guarantees reinfestation.
- Pouring in peroxide, alcohol, or undiluted vinegar. These sting inflamed skin and can worsen the damage.
