"Dog pink eye" is the everyday name for canine conjunctivitis — inflammation of the pink membrane lining the lids and the white of the eye. It looks alarming and it usually responds well to the right care: in a 2007–2022 hospital series of 153 dogs with follicular conjunctivitis, 80.6% of affected eyes (100 of 124) had resolved completely within one month of appropriate topical therapy (Cerrada I, Leiva M, Vilao R, Peña T, Ríos J, Vet Ophthalmol. 2024;27(4):310-317, PMID 37850538).
The important qualifier is appropriate. Canine pink eye is not the human illness with a different patient — dogs rarely get primary bacterial conjunctivitis, and what looks like pink eye is frequently dry eye, an ulcer, a foreign body (grass seeds are a classic Australian culprit in spring and summer) or, in the worst case, glaucoma wearing the same costume. Below is how the presentations separate, what recovery realistically looks like week by week, and where daily care like Pure Majesty Pets Dog Eye Drops (A$30) and Advanced Vision drops for dogs (A$47) belongs — after the diagnosis, as part of routine care, with free worldwide shipping and duties and GST prepaid to Australia.
The recovery numbers, and what predicts them
The 2024 series is the most useful dataset published for owners, and almost none of it appears on consumer pages. Across 153 dogs and 276 eyes:
| Finding | Value |
|---|---|
| Eyes fully resolved at 1 month on topical therapy | 80.6% (100/124) |
| Dogs under 18 months of age | 54% (83/153) |
| Adults | 46% (70/153) |
| Severity associated with young age | p = 0.032 |
| Severity associated with bilateral disease | p = 0.025 |
| Severity associated with skin disease | No significant association (p > 0.05) |
That last line is the counterintuitive one. Follicular conjunctivitis is often assumed to be an allergy problem in disguise; in this cohort, severity tracked with youth and with both eyes being involved, not with dermatological disease. Practically: a young dog with both eyes affected is likely to present worse, and is still very likely to recover within the month.
Pink eye in dogs is rarely a primary bacterial infection
Bacterial infection is not a recognised cause of primary conjunctivitis in dogs. Secondary bacterial conjunctivitis is common, but it requires something to compromise the eye first — keratoconjunctivitis sicca, entropion, ectropion, lagophthalmos, facial nerve paresis, distichiasis, ectopic cilia, trichiasis, or a conjunctival foreign body. If your vet has already confirmed an organism is involved, our breakdown of bacterial eye infection in dogs covers how those are diagnosed and managed. Merck reinforces this from the other direction: purulent discharge indicates a bacterial component "but the bacterium may be opportunistic", and "the appearance of the conjunctiva usually is not sufficiently distinctive to suggest the etiologic agent" (Merck Veterinary Manual, The Conjunctiva in Animals).
Some supporting perspective on how weak a signal "it looks infected" really is: among 476 dogs whose eyes were suspicious enough for a specialist to culture, 46.2% of cultures grew nothing (Hewitt et al., Front Vet Sci. 2020;7:583965). Those were ulcerative keratitis cases, not conjunctivitis, so the percentage doesn't transfer — but the lesson does: appearance is a poor proxy for cause, which is why an exam beats a colour chart every time.
Australian triggers to mention to your vet
Several everyday Australian exposures belong in your dog's eye history:
- Grass seeds and dust. Spring and summer walks through long grass, dry paddocks and beach dunes send seeds and grit into the conjunctival sac — a common cause of sudden one-sided squinting.
- Pollen season. ASCIA notes southern grasses pollinate mostly October–December (Melbourne's counts run from mid-October to the end of December), while subtropical grasses in northern coastal areas peak January–March. Allergic dogs often get itchy, red eyes in those windows alongside itchy paws.
- Contact allergens. AVA's Vet Voice lists buffalo grass, kikuyu and Wandering Trad among plants that trigger allergic skin reactions; dogs that rub their faces on lawns can bring that inflammation to the eyelids.
- Heat and wind. Hot, dry northerlies and car trips with the window down dry the ocular surface, which matters for dogs with borderline tear production.
Is it pink eye, or is it something that only looks like it?
| Presentation | Most likely | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| Both eyes, itchy, chemosis, dog also scratching face and paws | Allergic conjunctivitis — 100% bilateral in a 122-dog series | See dog eye allergies vs infection; book a workup |
| Young dog, follicles visible on the inner third eyelid, both eyes | Follicular conjunctivitis | Topical therapy; ~80% resolve in a month |
| One eye, thick discharge, squinting, dog head-shy | Foreign body (often a grass seed), ulcer or secondary bacterial infection | Exam within 24 hours, fluorescein stain |
| Both eyes, sticky ropey discharge, dull cornea, recurring | Dry eye (KCS) | Schirmer tear test — see dry eye in dogs |
| Deep branching vessels, blue cornea, dilated pupil, obvious pain | Acute glaucoma or uveitis | Emergency, same day |
The one that must not be missed
Acute glaucoma presents with blepharospasm, episcleral hyperaemia, diffuse corneal oedema, mydriasis and loss of vision, with intraocular pressure typically above 40–60 mm Hg against a normal canine range of roughly 12–25 mm Hg. MSD's guidance is unambiguous: glaucoma is a common cause of irreversible blindness in dogs, early diagnosis is critical, and intraocular pressure should be measured in all dogs with ocular pain, corneal oedema or episcleral injection (MSD Veterinary Manual, Acute Glaucoma in Small Animals, Thomasy, 2024). Predisposed breeds for primary angle-closure include the American Cocker Spaniel, Basset Hound, Chow Chow, Chinese Shar-Pei, Samoyed and Siberian Husky.
The distinguishing feature owners can actually use is pain. Conjunctivitis is uncomfortable; glaucoma hurts. A dog that will not let you near the eye, holds it shut, or has gone quiet and off its food needs a clinic today, not a rinse.
What treatment looks like, and what recovery feels like
| Stage | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Day 0 | Exam, fluorescein stain to rule out an ulcer, Schirmer tear test, sometimes cytology or culture. This sequence is what makes treatment "appropriate". |
| Days 1–5 | Discharge and redness usually begin easing on prescribed topical therapy. Keep the cone on — self-trauma is the main reason cases stall. |
| Week 2 | Marked improvement expected. No improvement at all by now means the diagnosis needs revisiting, not a longer course. |
| Week 4 | Roughly four out of five eyes fully resolved in the published follicular series. Recheck if any redness or discharge remains. |
| Beyond | Recurrence points at an underlying cause — lid conformation, dry eye, allergy. Fix the cause or the pink eye returns. |
Three things not to do
Human redness drops. "Get the red out" drops from the chemist contain imidazoline decongestants (tetrahydrozoline, naphazoline, oxymetazoline). These are toxic to pets; ingestion — including what a dog licks off its face — can cause vomiting, bradycardia, hypotension, ataxia and collapse, sometimes within 15–30 minutes (Pet Poison Helpline, Imidazolines).
Leftover steroid drops. Merck's allowance for topical corticosteroids in allergic chemosis carries a condition — "if no corneal ulcer is present". You cannot establish that at home.
Stopping early. Eyes look better long before they are better. Finish the course and attend the recheck.
Daily care after the diagnosis — where Pure Majesty fits
Nothing you buy without a prescription treats conjunctivitis, and any product claiming to should lose your trust immediately. Two roles remain, and both are real — and both are where our eye range is built to be the best daily option you can buy.
Surface hygiene and comfort. Clearing crust, dust and pollen with a sterile, purpose-made rinse reduces the mechanical irritation that keeps a conjunctiva angry. Pure Majesty Pets Dog Eye Drops are ophthalmic-grade and sterile-filtered (10-micron), pH-matched to canine tears at 7.0–7.2 so they don't sting, and carry sodium hyaluronate 0.05% for dry, gritty eyes, chamomile 2% and aloe vera 8% to soothe redness, pro-vitamin B5, and sodium phytate 0.15% for tear-stain control without bleach or peroxide. They are non-medicated — the comfortable clean-up between doses of your vet's medication, not a replacement for it. A 120 mL bottle is A$30. Our step-by-step on how to clean dog eyes covers the technique.
| Product | What it does | Price seen (7 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Pure Majesty Pets Dog Eye Drops, 120 mL | Sterile pH 7.0–7.2 flush + hyaluronic acid, chamomile, aloe, B5, sodium phytate | A$30, free shipping, duties & GST prepaid |
| Petkin Jumbo Eye Wipes (80) | Wipes for the fur around the eye | A$27.95 (Pet City) |
| TropiClean Tear Stain Remover, 236 mL | Tear-stain remover for the surrounding fur | A$29.95 (Pet City) |
Nutritional support. The canine evidence here is narrow and we'd rather quote it accurately than inflate it. Dogs carry essentially no plasma lutein or zeaxanthin without dietary supply — undetectable in unsupplemented Beagles, rising dose-dependently at 5, 10 and 20 mg/day over 12 weeks (Kim HW et al., Vet Immunol Immunopathol. 2000;74(3-4):315-327, PMID 10802297) — an immune-function study, not an eye-disease one. In 12 senior Beagles supplemented for six months, electroretinographic responses and refractive error change differed significantly from controls (J Nutr Sci. 2016;5:e18, PMID 27293555): small, healthy, industry-affiliated, retinal rather than conjunctival. And in the one canine trial where nutrition moved ocular-surface measures — 50 dogs with immune-mediated dry eye on a nutraceutical diet alongside standard immunosuppression for 60 days — the improvements in tear production and conjunctival inflammation were real, but the study was co-authored by the diet's manufacturer and carries a published erratum (BMC Vet Res. 2016;12(1):214, PMID 27658509).
That is the case for daily antioxidant support: plausible and adjunctive. Advanced Vision drops for dogs is built for exactly that role — a 100% plant-based liquid with antioxidant berry and botanical extracts, turmeric and ginger, A$47 for two 30 mL bottles (60 mL), dosed to weight by dropper instead of a fixed amount per chew. That matters because more than half the dogs in the follicular conjunctivitis series were under 18 months, and a puppy is not a fixed-dose patient. Free worldwide shipping, delivered to Australia with duties and GST prepaid. It is a supplement, not a medicine, and it supports everyday eye health rather than replacing treatment for conjunctivitis or any infection. Is dog pink eye contagious?
Not in the way human pink eye is. Canine conjunctivitis is generally not transmitted to people, and dog-to-dog spread is limited to specific infectious causes such as canine distemper or certain viral and parasitic agents rather than the everyday secondary conjunctivitis most dogs present with. Basic hygiene — wash your hands, don't share towels or eye pads between animals — covers the realistic risk. If several dogs in a household, boarding kennel or doggy day care develop signs together, that pattern itself is worth reporting to your vet.
When to call the vet
Same day: squinting or the eye held shut, cloudy or blue cornea, dilated pupil, obvious pain, sudden vision change, visible injury, or a predisposed breed with a painful red eye.
Within 24–48 hours: one eye only, thick discharge, redness that is worsening, or any redness that has not started improving after a day.
Recheck: anything still present at two weeks on treatment, or a third episode in a year — recurrence means the underlying cause has not been found.

FAQ
How long does pink eye last in a dog?
In a series of 153 dogs with follicular conjunctivitis, 80.6% of affected eyes (100 of 124) resolved completely within one month on appropriate topical therapy (Vet Ophthalmol 2024). Most owners see clear improvement within the first week or two; no improvement by two weeks means the diagnosis should be revisited.
Can dog pink eye go away without treatment?
Mild irritant conjunctivitis sometimes settles once the irritant is gone, but conjunctivitis in dogs is usually secondary to something else — dry eye, lid conformation, a foreign body such as a grass seed — and those causes do not resolve on their own. An untreated eye also risks corneal involvement.
Is dog pink eye contagious to humans?
Canine conjunctivitis is generally not transmitted to people. Dog-to-dog spread is limited to specific infectious causes rather than the common secondary conjunctivitis. Wash hands and don't share eye pads between pets.
What can I give my dog for pink eye at home?
Only a sterile saline flush or a sterile, pH-matched dog eye rinse, plus preventing rubbing. Never use human redness-relief drops — they contain imidazoline decongestants toxic to pets — and never reuse a steroid drop, which Merck permits only when no corneal ulcer is present.
Is pink eye in dogs bacterial?
Rarely as a primary cause. Secondary bacterial conjunctivitis is common but requires an underlying compromise such as dry eye, entropion, distichiasis or a foreign body. Merck notes that even purulent discharge may reflect an opportunistic organism.
Does an eye supplement fix dog pink eye?
No. No supplement is a treatment for conjunctivitis. Antioxidant supplements are daily wellness support for a healthy eye and belong alongside veterinary treatment, not instead of it.
Do Pure Majesty eye products ship to Australia?
Yes. Shipping is free worldwide, and orders to Australia ship with duties and GST prepaid (DDP), so there is nothing to pay on delivery. Dog Eye Drops are A$30 and Advanced Vision is A$47.
