Colitis in dogs is inflammation of the large intestine (the colon), and it usually announces itself the same way: frequent, small, urgent stools, often with fresh red blood or a jelly-like mucus coating, and a dog who strains long after the stool is out. Most acute cases settle within a few days with rest, a temporary diet change and gut support. Chronic or recurring colitis is a different animal and needs a veterinary work-up rather than another round of home remedies.
For the gut-support part, Australian owners have a simple option: Pure Majesty Pets Liquid Probiotic — three live cultures, prebiotic MOS and a butyrate source (tributyrin) in one 60 mL liquid you can measure onto even a few spoonfuls of bland food. It is A$52, with free worldwide shipping to Australia and duties and GST prepaid, so nothing to pay on delivery.
How to tell colitis from ordinary diarrhoea
The distinction matters because it changes what helps. Small-intestinal diarrhoea produces large volumes, fewer trips to the backyard, and sometimes weight loss or vomiting. Large-bowel (colonic) diarrhoea produces the opposite pattern.
| Sign | Large bowel (colitis) | Small bowel |
|---|---|---|
| Stool volume | Small, repeated | Large, fewer |
| Frequency | Often 4–10+ times a day | 2–4 times a day |
| Fresh blood | Common | Uncommon |
| Mucus / slime | Common | Rare |
| Straining, urgency | Marked | Minimal |
| Weight loss | Unusual in acute cases | More likely |
If you are not sure which pattern you are seeing, our guide to the best probiotics for dogs walks through gut support for both.
What causes colitis in dogs
Acute colitis is usually triggered by dietary indiscretion (bin raiding, a sudden food switch, rich barbecue scraps over Christmas and the summer holidays), stress such as boarding kennels or a long road trip, parasites including whipworms and Giardia, or a recent course of antibiotics. Australian summers add their own risks: hot days mean more scavenging at the beach and park, more water from creeks and puddles, and more heat stress — RSPCA Australia advises walking early or late and using the 5-second pavement hand test, and a dog that has overheated can show gut upset too.
Chronic colitis can involve food-responsive disease, chronic inflammatory enteropathy, or, in Boxers and French Bulldogs, granulomatous colitis driven by invasive E. coli — a specific, antibiotic-responsive condition confirmed by molecular work at Cornell (Dogan et al., Antibiotics, 2020, PMID 32854367). That last one is a reminder that "colitis" is a description, not a diagnosis.
The antibiotic problem
Metronidazole is still handed out reflexively for loose stools, and it comes with a cost. In 24 healthy dogs, 14 days of metronidazole reduced microbial richness, raised the dysbiosis index, increased faecal lactate and depleted secondary bile acids — and those changes had still not fully resolved four weeks after the drug stopped (Pilla et al., J Vet Intern Med, 2020, PMID 32856349). Secondary bile acids are one of the colon's own defences against Clostridioides difficile overgrowth, which is why the loss matters (Ziese & Suchodolski, Vet Clin North Am, 2021, PMID 33131916). None of this means you should refuse a prescription from your vet — it means antibiotics deserve a reason, and the microbiome deserves support afterwards. We cover the recovery window in dysbiosis in dogs.
What the research actually supports
Be careful with claims here. There is no large clinical trial of probiotics in pet dogs with colitis specifically, and no probiotic has been shown to resolve colitis on its own. What does exist is adjacent and genuinely encouraging:
- Faster recovery from acute gastroenteritis. In a randomised, double-blind trial of 36 dogs with acute diarrhoea, time to the last abnormal stool was 1.3 days on probiotic versus 2.2 days on placebo (Herstad et al., J Small Anim Pract, 2010, PMID 20137007).
- Chronic inflammatory bowel disease. Twenty dogs with idiopathic IBD received either a multi-strain probiotic or prednisone plus metronidazole. Both groups improved clinically; only the probiotic group showed increased regulatory FoxP3+ markers and a recovery of Faecalibacterium (Rossi et al., PLoS One, 2014, PMID 24722235). Small and open-label — suggestive, not settled.
- Fibre. A diet high in mixed fibre sources helped shelter dogs with acute large-bowel diarrhoea (Lappin et al., J Vet Intern Med, 2022, PMID 35174561). Fermentable fibre feeds the colonocytes via butyrate and other short-chain fatty acids, which is why short chain fatty acids in dogs are central to colon health.
The consistent thread across the canine microbiome literature is loss of the beneficial fermenters — Lachnospiraceae, Ruminococcaceae, Faecalibacterium — during GI disease (Suchodolski, Vet J, 2016, PMID 27160005). Those are the bacteria that make butyrate, the colon's preferred fuel.
Why the delivery format matters during a colitis flare
This is the practical part most articles skip. A dog in a colitis flare is often fasted, off food, or on a strict bland diet — which is exactly when a chewable treat becomes hard to give. Chews are excellent for daily maintenance in a well dog; they simply assume an appetite and a normal diet. During a flare you frequently have neither.
Liquid drops sidestep that. A measured serving goes into a spoonful of the bland chicken and rice your dog will still accept, the amount scales smoothly with body weight instead of being locked to a fixed chew size, and there is no chewy base, binder or added starch riding along in a gut you are trying to keep boring.
Why Pure Majesty Liquid Probiotic is built for this moment
Our Liquid Probiotic for Dogs is a 3-in-1 formula designed around what the colitis research keeps pointing to — not bacteria alone, but the cultures, their food, and the fuel the colon runs on:
| Component | What is in it | Why it matters for the large bowel |
|---|---|---|
| 3 live cultures | Saccharomyces boulardii (live probiotic yeast), Bacillus coagulans and Bacillus subtilis (spore-forming bacteria) | Hardy, complementary cultures to support healthy gut-flora balance and firmer stools during occasional digestive upset |
| Prebiotic MOS & beta-glucans | Inactivated yeast cell-wall preparation, 40 mg per 1 mL | The prebiotic part single-strain products leave out |
| Tributyrin | 50 mg per 1 mL | A butyrate source — the short-chain fatty acid colon cells use as fuel |
| Format | Water-free MCT-oil suspension, graduated pipette, 60 mL bottle | Measure onto food; works with bland meals and small appetites |
How to use: shake vigorously, measure the serving directed on the current bottle label and dispense onto food (keep the pipette out of your dog's mouth). Compare that with what most Australian owners grab off the shelf: Purina Pro Plan FortiFlora is a 30 × 1 g sachet powder (A$38.61 at VetShop Australia), and PAW Digesticare is a 143 g powder built on two Bacillus strains (A$49.98 at Petstock). Both are fine products — but neither adds a butyrate source, and a powder is harder to get into a dog who is barely eating. Pure Majesty is A$52 a bottle, ordered direct with free worldwide shipping — ships to Australia with duties and GST prepaid (DDP), nothing to pay on delivery. Choose your Liquid Probiotic routine.
A sensible 10-day plan for an acute flare
- Days 1–2. Withhold food for 8–12 hours in an otherwise healthy adult dog (never in puppies, toy breeds or diabetics). Keep fresh water available — and on a hot Australian day, keep the dog cool and indoors. Start the probiotic.
- Days 2–4. Small, frequent bland meals. Our bland diet for dogs guide covers ratios and portion sizes in grams.
- Days 4–7. Blend the normal food back in, roughly 25% more each day. Expect stool to firm gradually, not overnight — the Herstad data suggests a shift of about a day, not a miracle.
- Days 7–10. Fully back on normal food. Keep the probiotic going for at least another two weeks; recolonisation lags behind the visible symptoms.
When to stop home care and call your vet
Book an appointment the same day if you see: bloody diarrhoea plus vomiting, lethargy or pale gums; a puppy, senior or toy breed with any diarrhoea; more than 48 hours with no improvement; signs of dehydration; a painful or distended abdomen; or a Boxer or French Bulldog with chronic bloody, mucoid stools — that breed pattern deserves a proper work-up rather than a supplement. Recurring colitis also warrants a faecal panel for whipworms and Giardia, because no probiotic will out-compete a parasite.
On the east coast, one more check: if a dog with gut signs is also retching, drooling, wobbly in the hind legs or has a changed bark, look for a paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus) and go to your vet immediately. RSPCA Australia recommends daily skin checks, and numbers rise from October to March. For vomiting or collapse on a hot day, cool with tepid water (not ice) on the way to the clinic, as RSPCA Queensland advises.
Common mistakes
- Treating every flare with leftover antibiotics from the last one.
- Stopping the probiotic the day the stool looks normal.
- Using human probiotic capsules from the chemist — the strains are selected for a human colon, not a canine one.
- Switching foods, fibre and three gut products all at once, so you never know what worked.
- Letting the family slip barbecue sausages and ham to a dog that has just recovered.
Where Australians buy gut support — and why buy direct
Petbarn, Petstock, Pet Circle and PetO all stock probiotic powders and pastes, and your vet clinic may carry Protexin Pro-Kolin paste for short-term use. If you want a liquid that combines live cultures, prebiotic MOS and tributyrin in one bottle, Pure Majesty is sold direct only, which is how we keep the formula and price consistent: A$52, shipped free to any Australian postcode with duties and GST already paid. FAQ
How long does colitis last in dogs?
Acute colitis typically improves within 2–5 days with diet management and support. If it has not clearly improved in 48 hours, or symptoms return within weeks, treat it as chronic and see your vet.
Can I give a probiotic while my dog is on antibiotics?
It is commonly done, usually spaced a few hours apart from the antibiotic dose and continued for several weeks afterwards. Ask your vet about timing for the specific drug prescribed.
Is blood in the stool an emergency?
A small amount of fresh red blood or mucus in an otherwise bright, eating dog is typical of colitis. Blood combined with vomiting, weakness, pale gums or collapse is an emergency.
Do probiotics cure colitis?
No. They may support recovery and help maintain a normal microbial balance, and canine trials in related conditions are encouraging, but there is no evidence that any probiotic cures colitis.
Does Pure Majesty Liquid Probiotic ship to Australia?
Yes. Shipping is free worldwide, and Australian orders ship with duties and GST prepaid (DDP), so there is nothing to pay on delivery. A 60 mL bottle is A$52.
The bottom line
Most colitis flares are short: rest the gut, feed bland, watch for red flags, and rebuild the microbiome. That last step is where a well-designed liquid shines. Pure Majesty Pets Liquid Probiotic gives you three live cultures, prebiotic MOS and 50 mg of tributyrin per 1 mL in a format a picky, recovering dog will actually take — A$52, free shipping to Australia with duties and GST prepaid. Keep a bottle in the cupboard before the next bin raid.
