The best probiotic strains for dogs are the ones with canine research behind them: Saccharomyces boulardii, Bacillus coagulans, Bacillus subtilis, Bifidobacterium animalis, Enterococcus faecium and certain Lactobacillus species. Evidence is strongest for short-term digestive upset, and it is specific to each strain, so a label that names its strains matters more than a big number on the front of the bottle. Below is what the studies actually tested, where the evidence is thin, how to read a label on the shelf at Petbarn or Pet Circle, and why we built the Pure Majesty Pets Liquid Probiotic for Dogs (A$52.00, 60 mL) around three named cultures with research behind them.
Why the strain matters more than the species
"Lactobacillus" is a genus, not a product. Two strains of the same species can behave differently, which is why a study on one strain cannot be borrowed to describe another. A review of canine and feline gut microbiota work notes that dysbiosis is hard to define and that responses vary between individual animals (Suchodolski, Vet J 2016). In practice: look for a genus, species and strain designation, and treat anything vaguer as a weaker claim. That applies whether the product comes from a vet clinic, a chemist, a big-box pet store or an online shop.
What the canine studies tested
| Strain or product tested | Dogs studied | What was observed | Evidence level |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saccharomyces boulardii (probiotic yeast) | 20 dogs with chronic enteropathy plus 4 healthy dogs (D'Angelo, Vet Rec 2018) | Clinical activity index, stool frequency and stool consistency improved versus placebo when added to standard treatment; no short-term side effects in healthy dogs | Small, non-randomised; promising |
| Bifidobacterium animalis AHC7 | 31 dogs with acute idiopathic diarrhoea (Kelley, Vet Ther 2009) | Resolution in 3.9 days versus 6.6 days with placebo | Randomised; single strain, single product |
| Multi-strain cocktail including Bacillus subtilis | 36 dogs with acute self-limiting gastroenteritis (Herstad, J Small Anim Pract 2010) | Last abnormal stool at 1.3 days versus 2.2 days with placebo; vomiting time was nearly equal | Randomised, double-blind; small |
| VSL#3 multi-strain mix | 20 dogs with IBD (Rossi, PLoS ONE 2014) | Clinical and histological scores fell; the authors call for larger trials | Open-label; preliminary |
| Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG | Early-life atopic dermatitis model in dogs (Marsella, Am J Vet Res 2009) | Studied in a research colony, not as a product for pet dogs | Research model only |
Two points stand out. First, every positive result comes from small trials, so the effects are best read as encouraging rather than final. Second, several of the strongest signals involve multi-strain products, so a well-chosen combination of named cultures makes sense, and that is exactly the logic behind a 3-in-1 formula.
Spore-formers and yeast: why they suit a liquid
Bacillus coagulans and Bacillus subtilis form spores, a dormant structure that tolerates heat and acid better than most non-spore bacteria. That matters in Australia: a parcel or a pantry shelf in a Brisbane or Darwin summer (December to February) gets far warmer than a temperate kitchen, and spore-formers are the cultures best equipped to cope. S. boulardii is a yeast, so antibiotics that target bacteria do not act on it directly; that is why it is often discussed for dogs on antibiotic courses. Whether a given product's cultures survive until the last dose is a stability question, and the format matters there. Our liquid probiotic guide covers how drops compare with powders and chews; a measured liquid on food is the easiest routine for fussy eaters and dogs who refuse chews.
Probiotics on Australian shelves: how they compare
Most Australian owners meet probiotics at a vet clinic, at Petbarn, Petstock or PetO, or online through Pet Circle. Here is how two widely sold options compare with our liquid, using the A$ prices we saw on 7 October 2026 (shelf prices change, so check before you buy):
| Product | Named cultures | Format | Price (A$) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pure Majesty Pets Liquid Probiotic for Dogs | S. boulardii, B. coagulans, B. subtilis + MOS, beta-glucans and tributyrin | 60 mL liquid, graduated pipette, onto food | A$52.00, free shipping, duties and GST prepaid |
| Purina Pro Plan FortiFlora | See the pack label | 30 × 1 g sachets | A$38.61 (VetShop Australia), about A$1.29 per sachet |
| PAW by Blackmores Digesticare | B. subtilis + B. licheniformis | 143 g powder | A$49.98 (Petstock) |
FortiFlora is a familiar vet-clinic sachet, and Digesticare is a spore-former powder you will also find at Kmart. Neither combines a probiotic yeast, two spore-forming bacteria, a prebiotic and a butyrate source in one product. If you want all three research-backed culture types in a single daily step, that is what our liquid was designed to do.
How to read a probiotic label
Weese's 2011 analysis of 25 veterinary probiotics found that only 4 of 15 products with specific viability claims met or exceeded their label claim, and only 2 of those had an acceptable label (Can Vet J 2011). That is old, and manufacturers have improved, but it explains the checklist:
- Named strains. Genus, species and strain, not "proprietary probiotic blend."
- Viable count to expiry. A CFU figure "at time of manufacture" says little about month eight.
- A prebiotic partner. Mannan-oligosaccharides (MOS) or similar ingredients give the cultures something to work with.
- A short inactive list. Fewer unfamiliar ingredients means fewer variables if your dog is sensitive.
- Batch testing. A certificate of analysis lets you verify the claims.
- Sensible claims. In Australia, digestive supplements sold without disease claims are typically handled by the APVMA as "Excluded Nutritional or Digestive" products (APVMA guidance). A label that promises to cure a disease is a red flag, not a selling point.
What is in our formula
Pure Majesty Pets Liquid Probiotic for Dogs is a 3-in-1 gut-support liquid. It contains three live, named cultures: Saccharomyces boulardii (a live probiotic yeast), Bacillus coagulans and Bacillus subtilis (two spore-forming bacteria). Each of the three is a species with its own canine literature, summarised in the strain guides linked above. Alongside them it carries MOS and beta-glucans from an inactivated yeast cell-wall preparation (the prebiotic component), plus tributyrin as a butyrate source, in a water-free MCT oil suspension with sunflower lecithin and mixed tocopherols.
It ticks every box on the checklist above: named cultures, a prebiotic partner, a short ingredient list, and a certificate of analysis (COA) for every batch. It is manufactured in North America under GMP. The formula is designed to support firmer stools during occasional digestive upset, healthy gut-flora balance and everyday digestion. The routine is simple: shake vigorously, measure the serving shown on the current bottle label with the graduated pipette, and add it to food (keep the pipette out of your dog's mouth). We do not publish a dose figure here that might differ from your bottle: the label is the reference.

What to expect, realistically
In the acute-diarrhoea trials above, differences showed up within days, not weeks. For everyday gut support, give a probiotic two to four weeks of consistent use before judging it, and keep other changes (new food, new treats, a new kibble from the supermarket) to a minimum so you can tell what is working. Mild, short-lived gas or soft stool in the first days is commonly reported when starting any probiotic. Summer is a good time to stay consistent: travel, boarding kennels, barbecue scraps and heat often upset Australian dogs' digestion between December and February.
When a probiotic is not the answer
Bloody stool, repeated vomiting, lethargy, a puppy or senior with diarrhoea lasting more than a day, or any dog with a diagnosed condition needs a vet first. If you suspect your dog has eaten something toxic, call the Animal Poisons Helpline on 1300 869 738 (24/7, animalpoisons.com.au). On the east coast, sudden retching or wobbly hind legs can be a sign of the paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus), not a tummy upset, and needs urgent veterinary care (RSPCA Australia Knowledgebase). Current research does not show that probiotics address allergies, skin disease or chronic bowel disease on their own, and the Marsella work above was a research model in colony dogs (see also Craig, Vet Med Sci 2016, on the gut-skin link).
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best probiotic strain for dogs?
No single strain wins on its own. S. boulardii, B. animalis AHC7 and several multi-strain products have small canine trials behind them; choose a product that names its strains. Our Liquid Probiotic combines S. boulardii, B. coagulans and B. subtilis in one liquid.
Are spore-forming probiotics good for dogs?
Bacillus coagulans and Bacillus subtilis are commonly used in pet products and are valued for stability, which helps in a hot Australian summer. Published canine data are still limited.
Is a multi-strain probiotic better than a single strain?
Not automatically. Multi-strain products appear in several trials, but the evidence does not show that more strains always means better results; complementary, named cultures matter more than a long list.
How many CFU should a dog probiotic have?
Trials have used widely varying amounts (for example 2 x 1010 CFU/day for AHC7). Follow the label and your vet's advice rather than chasing the biggest number.
Can I give my dog a probiotic every day?
Probiotics are commonly given daily. Ask your vet first if your dog is pregnant, nursing, immunocompromised or on medication.
How much does shipping to Australia cost?
Nothing. Free worldwide shipping — ships to Australia with duties and GST prepaid (DDP), nothing to pay on delivery. The Liquid Probiotic is A$52.00 per 60 mL bottle.
