If your dog is scratching at 3 a.m., shedding clumps of hair onto the lounge, or has a coat that looks tired no matter how often you brush — you're not imagining it. Chronic skin and coat problems are one of the most common reasons Australian dogs visit the vet, and our climate makes it harder: humid Queensland and coastal NSW summers favour yeast, and grass and weed allergens are everywhere from Perth backyards to Melbourne parks. For everyday skin and immune support, Pure Majesty Pets Allergy & Itch Chews combine wild salmon, sardine, chia and borage oils with quercetin, phytoceramides and gut support in one soft chew — A$74, with free shipping to Australia and duties and GST prepaid (DDP), so there is nothing to pay on delivery.
The good news: a meaningful share of dog skin problems respond well to nutritional support. The harder news: itchy skin is also a symptom of dozens of other things, from allergies to thyroid disease to mange. Supplements help most when the root cause is nutritional or inflammatory. They don't fix everything — and knowing the difference saves you months.
This guide explains when a skin and coat supplement is the right move, what to look for, which Australian triggers to rule out first, and how Pure Majesty compares with what's on the shelf at Petbarn and Petstock. For broader supplement context, see our complete dog supplements guide.
First: rule out the medical causes
Before you reach for a supplement, ask whether one of these is the actual cause:
Parasites. Fleas, mites (sarcoptic mange, demodex) and lice are the single most common cause of itching that owners overlook. Even one flea bite can drive weeks of itching in a sensitive dog. Talk to your vet about year-round flea and tick prevention — on the east coast that also means protection against the paralysis tick (Ixodes holocyclus), found from North Queensland to Victoria. RSPCA Australia recommends daily skin checks; a 2025 University of Queensland study found 73% of ticks attach on the head and neck, so start there.
Food allergies. Roughly 10–20% of allergic dogs are reacting to a food protein (most commonly chicken, beef, dairy or wheat). A vet-directed elimination diet is the only reliable diagnostic.
Environmental allergies (atopy). Pollen, dust mites, mould. Often seasonal. Shows up as paw licking, face rubbing, ear infections and belly itching. ASCIA notes that subtropical grass pollens in northern coastal areas peak mostly January to March, while southern grasses peak October to December — so a Brisbane dog and a Melbourne dog can flare at completely different times of year.
Contact allergies to Australian plants. The AVA's Vet Voice lists buffalo grass, kikuyu, Wandering Jew, Zebrina, Turtle Vine, Moses-in-a-cradle, Purple Heart and Inch Plant as common culprits, producing a red, itchy rash on the paws, belly and armpits. Wandering Trad (Tradescantia fluminensis) is widespread in higher-rainfall NSW, coastal Victoria and south-east Queensland and can cause severe skin reactions. Bindii seeds (spiny pods from late autumn until early December) can also pierce paws and kick off licking.
Hypothyroidism. A common hormonal disorder in middle-aged dogs that causes a dull coat, symmetrical hair loss, weight gain and skin infections. Diagnosed with bloodwork.
Cushing's disease. Older dogs, often Miniature Schnauzers, Poodles and Boxers. Coat thinning, pot belly, increased thirst.
Bacterial or yeast infections. Often secondary to allergies, and more common in warm, humid months — the WAVD consensus (Bond et al., Veterinary Dermatology 2020) notes Malassezia dermatitis is more common in tropical climates. These need vet-prescribed treatment, not supplements.

For supportive care; not a substitute for veterinary diagnosis or prescribed treatment.
If your dog's itching started suddenly, is severe, or comes with hair loss, redness or scabbing — go to the vet first. Supplements are for ongoing maintenance and mild-to-moderate problems, not active infections.
When skin and coat supplements actually help
Nutritional support is most effective when:
- The dog is generally healthy but has a dull coat, mild dryness or excess shedding
- A vet has ruled out underlying disease
- The dog has mild seasonal allergies and you're trying to reduce how often it flares
- The dog is older and skin elasticity is declining
- The dog is on a complete diet but the formula is low in EPA/DHA
The ingredients that move the needle
Five categories of active ingredient have the strongest evidence for skin and coat support in dogs.
1. Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA + DHA)
The most evidence-backed nutritional option for canine skin. Helps calm inflammation, supports the skin barrier and improves coat sheen. A commonly cited intake is roughly 50–100 mg combined EPA+DHA per kg of body weight per day — confirm with your vet.
Sources: cold-water fish oil, krill oil and algal oil. For comparison shopping see our fish oil vs collagen for dogs guide.
2. Hydrolysed collagen
A dog's skin is approximately 70% collagen by dry weight. Hydrolysed collagen peptides are absorbed efficiently and signal new collagen production in the dermis, supporting elasticity and barrier function. Many owners notice a softer, shinier coat within 4–6 weeks. Pure Majesty Liquid Collagen for dogs — the most popular liquid collagen for dogs — delivers 462 mg of hydrolysed collagen types I & III per 2 mL serving, plus a 252 mg salmon oil and bone broth complex.
Our deep-dive: liquid collagen for dogs.
3. Biotin and B vitamins
Biotin (vitamin B7) supports keratin production, which makes up the hair shaft and nail. B-complex vitamins generally support skin metabolism.
4. Zinc
Essential for skin healing and barrier function. Zinc-responsive dermatosis is a recognised condition in some breeds (Huskies, Malamutes). Most quality skin formulas include it.
5. Vitamin E
A fat-soluble antioxidant that protects skin lipids from oxidative damage. Often paired with omega-3s, which oxidise easily.
What's in Pure Majesty Allergy & Itch Chews
Most "skin and coat" chews stop at fish oil. Ours works on three fronts at once — soothing the itch, repairing the skin barrier and steadying the gut and immune systems that drive flare-ups:
| Ingredient group | Role |
|---|---|
| Wild salmon, sardine, chia & borage oils | Omega-3 and GLA base to calm inflammation and nourish skin and coat |
| Quercetin | Plant flavonoid often called "nature's antihistamine" |
| Bromelain & turmeric (95% curcumin) | Support a calm inflammatory response |
| Phytoceramides & biotin | Help rebuild the skin barrier and strengthen coat |
| Colostrum, probiotics & prebiotics | A balanced gut is one of the biggest levers on allergic skin |
| Zinc, vitamin E & rosehip (natural vitamin C) | Antioxidant and skin-repair support |
Cold-pressed to protect heat-sensitive oils and probiotics, with a hydrolysed pork-liver base for fussy eaters, no artificial flavours or fillers, made in North America with a Certificate of Analysis on every batch.
How it compares with skin products sold in Australia
| Product | Type | What it covers | Price seen (7 Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pure Majesty Allergy & Itch Chews | Oral soft chew | Omega-3/GLA + quercetin + barrier + gut + antioxidants | A$74, free DDP shipping |
| PAW Dermega Omega 3 & 6 | Oral liquid, 200 mL | Omega fatty acids | A$21.00 (Petstock) |
| Virbac Megaderm | Oral liquid | Omega fatty acids | Varies by pack |
| Dermcare Aloveen | Oatmeal shampoo, 500 mL | Topical soothing | A$42.95 (Pet City) |
| Dermcare Malaseb foam | Topical foam, 250 mL | Topical care for yeasty, greasy skin | A$35.00 (Petbarn) |
An omega-only oil is a sensible base, and medicated washes have their place for flare-ups. But neither touches the gut–skin link or the histamine side of itch. That's the gap our chews were built to fill — and a quality chew plus a good shampoo is a strong combination.
Single-active vs combination formulas
Single-active products: a pure fish oil, a pure collagen, a pure biotin powder. Best when you want maximum control and know exactly what's missing.
Combination skin & allergy formulas: omega-3s plus antihistamine-type flavonoids, barrier nutrients and gut support. Best for the itchy, allergy-prone dog.
Multi-purpose formulas (collagen + omega-3 + joint support): best for owners who want one daily serving covering joints, skin and coat. Liquid collagen drops sit in this category.
For most owners, the cleanest evidence-based stack is the Allergy & Itch Chews for the itch, plus Liquid Collagen for structural skin and coat support — two angles, one routine.
Liquid vs chew vs topical
| Form | Pros | Cons |
|---|---|---|
| Liquid drops | Mix easily into food, no fillers, weight-flexible dosing | Needs measuring each day |
| Soft chews | Easy to give as a treat; can pack many actives in one serving | Check the label — some brands add sugar or grain fillers |
| Powder topper | Cheap, customisable | Some dogs refuse; some actives oxidise on food |
| Topical sprays and shampoos | Targeted relief for hot spots and flare-ups | Don't address nutritional or immune drivers |
For systemic, ongoing skin and coat support, oral supplements beat topicals. Topicals are useful for acute hot-spot relief but don't address the underlying skin barrier.
How long until you see results?
- Weeks 1–2: no visible change. Skin cell turnover takes about 3 weeks.
- Weeks 3–4: skin may feel less dry to the touch.
- Weeks 4–6: coat shine and softness often improve, and many owners notice less scratching.
- Weeks 6–10: reduced itching in inflammation-driven cases.
- Weeks 8–12: reduced shedding (you have to wait for a full hair growth cycle).
Timing matters in Australia: start 4–6 weeks before your local high-pollen season — around August–September for southern dogs heading into the October–December grass season, or November–December for northern coastal dogs ahead of January–March. If 12 weeks of consistent use hasn't produced visible change, the cause is likely not nutritional — return to your vet to revisit allergies, parasites or hormonal disease.
How to introduce a skin and coat supplement
- Confirm with your vet, especially if your dog is on prescription medication.
- Start at half the recommended serving for 5–7 days.
- Watch for soft stool, fishy breath (with omega-3s) or any new itching.
- Build to the full serving if there are no issues.
- Photograph your dog at week 0 — coat changes are gradual and easy to miss without a comparison point.
Ready to support your dog from the inside out?

Frequently asked questions
What's the best supplement for shedding? Omega-3s and hydrolysed collagen, given consistently for 8–12 weeks. Don't expect overnight changes — you're waiting on hair cycle turnover.
Can a supplement stop my dog from itching? If the itching is allergy-driven, omega-3s, quercetin and collagen can reduce how often and how badly it flares. If the itching is from fleas, mange, infection or food allergy, a supplement won't fix the root cause. See your vet first.
Is fish oil safe long-term? Yes, at appropriate doses. The most common issues are loose stool at high doses or fishy breath. Fish oil mildly affects blood clotting — tell your vet before any surgery.
My dog has dry skin in winter. Will supplements help? Often, yes. Heated indoor air from June to August, plus less time outdoors, is a common seasonal pattern. Omega-3s plus collagen is a reasonable winter stack.
Are dog skin and coat chews worth it? Some are. Read the active ingredient list carefully — many "skin & coat" chews are little more than fish oil with fillers. Look for barrier nutrients, antihistamine-type flavonoids and gut support alongside the omega-3s.
Can puppies take skin supplements? Most healthy puppies on a complete and balanced diet don't need them. Discuss with your vet for breed-specific predispositions.
Do Pure Majesty skin supplements ship to Australia? Yes. Shipping is free worldwide, and orders to Australia ship with duties and GST prepaid (DDP), so there is nothing to pay on delivery. Allergy & Itch Chews are A$74; Liquid Collagen is A$47.
Bottom line
Skin and coat supplements help most when you've ruled out parasites (including the paralysis tick on the east coast), allergies and hormonal disease; when you commit to 8–12 weeks of consistent daily use; and when you combine itch and barrier support with structural support from collagen.
