Amantadine for Dogs Australia: Off-Label Dosing, Vets and Timeline

In Australia, amantadine is prescribed for dogs off-label from a human Schedule 4 medicine — no amantadine product is registered for dogs anywhere in the world. Dosing is typically 3–5 mg/kg by mouth, it is added to an NSAID rather than replacing one, and the only randomised placebo-controlled trial in dogs found the benefit at day 42, not at day 7 or day 21.

If your vet has just raised amantadine, your dog is almost certainly at the stage where an NSAID alone is no longer holding the pain. Here is what the evidence supports, what it does not, and the Australian specifics that change how the prescription reaches you.

How off-label prescribing works here

The APVMA registers veterinary chemical products; it has never registered an amantadine product for dogs, because none exists. A registered veterinarian may nonetheless prescribe a human medicine for an animal off-label, and that authority comes from state and territory veterinary and poisons legislation rather than from the APVMA. Amantadine is Prescription Only (Schedule 4) in the Poisons Standard, so it is dispensed against your vet's prescription and never sold over the counter.

Two Australian consequences follow. First, a suburban pharmacy may not stock it, and you may be supplied a compounded liquid instead of capsules — and compounded concentrations differ between pharmacies. Check the mg per mL on every new bottle. A syringe mark memorised from the last batch is the classic route to a serious overdose in a small dog. Second, if you are rural, ask whether a 6-week supply can be dispensed at once, because this drug should not be judged — or interrupted — at two weeks.

What amantadine does, and why it needs a partner drug

Amantadine is a weak NMDA-receptor antagonist. After months of joint pain, spinal cord neurons become progressively easier to fire — central sensitisation, or wind-up — and NMDA receptors drive that amplification. Amantadine dampens it. An NSAID such as meloxicam for dogs Australia works at the joint on inflammation; amantadine works on the signal in the spinal cord. Different target, different job. That is why a correctly dosed dog can still be sore, and why the two are combined. Gabapentin for dogs Australia belongs to the same central-acting group.

The 2022 AAHA Pain Management Guidelines treat chronic canine pain this way on purpose — stack mechanisms rather than push one drug higher (Gruen et al., JAAHA 2022;58(2):55–76, PMID 35195712).

The evidence, and the six-week rule

Lascelles and colleagues enrolled dogs with hind-limb osteoarthritis pain already refractory to an NSAID, kept them on meloxicam, and randomised them to amantadine 3–5 mg/kg once daily or placebo. Owner-scored activity improved significantly on day 42, with no significant difference at day 7 or day 21 (J Vet Intern Med 2008;22(1):53–59, PMID 18289289).

Canine pharmacokinetic work found rapid elimination and suggested every-12-hour dosing may suit dogs better than once daily (Norkus et al., J Vet Pharmacol Ther 2015;38(3):305–308, PMID 25427541). A 2025 study reported it as an option for neuropathic pain in dogs with degenerative lumbosacral stenosis (BMC Vet Res 2025;21(1):469, PMID 40671053).

Not supported by evidence: amantadine as a stand-alone painkiller in dogs, any effect on cartilage, and any slowing of arthritis progression.

Amantadine beside Beransa

Australian owners meet a naming difference here that trips up anyone reading American articles. The anti-NGF monoclonal antibody sold as Librela in the United States is registered in Australia as Beransa for dogs Australia — same active, bedinvetmab, different brand. Both amantadine and Beransa are add-ons for dogs whose NSAID is no longer enough, but they differ in almost every practical respect.

Amantadine Beransa (bedinvetmab)
Registered for dogs in Australia No — off-label human medicine Yes
How it is given Oral, daily at home Monthly injection at the clinic
Target NMDA receptors (central sensitisation) Nerve growth factor
Time to judge ~6 weeks Assessed monthly
Needs an NSAID alongside Yes — that is the studied use Discussed case by case

Side effects

  • Common, mild, usually early: soft stools, diarrhoea, wind, restlessness or agitation, sleepiness that fades.
  • Less common: increased thirst, difficulty urinating, faster heart rate.
  • Call your vet: seizures, tremors, incoordination, marked agitation, limb swelling, repeated vomiting.

Raise kidney disease before the first dose — amantadine is cleared renally. Raise any serotonergic medication too, including tramadol for dogs Australia and behavioural drugs.

What you control long before amantadine

Every dog in the amantadine evidence base had already failed something. The earliest stage of arthritis management is not a drug at all — lean body weight, controlled low-impact exercise, grip on tiles and floorboards, and consistent long-term joint support. The Canadian consensus guidelines on osteoarthritis staging make the same structural argument (Front Vet Sci 2022;9:830098, PMID 35558892).

Pure Majesty Pets Hip & Joint Chews are the foundation-row option: an 18-ingredient joint-care matrix rather than the two-ingredient glucosamine-and-chondroitin formulas that dominate Australian pet aisles, so one chew covers glucosamine, chondroitin, green-lipped mussel, MSM and turmeric-family support without stacking three products. For fussy dogs or sore mouths, liquid glucosamine for dogs pours over food and doses a 6 kg dog and a 45 kg dog from one bottle. Made in North America under GMP with a certificate of analysis on every batch, and shipped free worldwide — so Australian delivery costs nothing extra, which is not the norm for imported joint supplements. Frequently asked questions

Is amantadine registered for dogs in Australia?

No. The APVMA has not registered any amantadine product for dogs, because none exists anywhere. Australian vets prescribe it off-label from a human Schedule 4 medicine under state and territory legislation.

What is the amantadine dose for dogs?

Veterinary sources commonly cite 3–5 mg/kg by mouth. The trial evidence used once daily; canine pharmacokinetics suggest every 12 hours may suit dogs better. Your vet sets both, and you should confirm the mg per capsule or mg per mL at every refill.

How long until it works?

About six weeks. The randomised trial found a significant improvement in owner-scored activity at day 42 and nothing significant at day 7 or day 21, so a fortnight is too early to judge.

Can amantadine be given with Beransa?

That is a decision for your vet, who will weigh your dog's full medication list. The two act on different targets and are not interchangeable. Never stop or start either on your own.
