A dull coat can prompt a shopping trip, but the more useful first step is a close look at the dog's routine. In South Africa, consider the complete diet, grooming products, parasite-control plan and any new itching or hair loss. A nutritional supplement may have a place, but it cannot diagnose the reason the coat has changed.
Start with food and body condition
The WSAVA nutrition guidelines and toolkit support individual assessment rather than a standard supplement list for every dog. Bring the food label and a record of treats, braai scraps, dental products and supplements to the vet. Check that the main diet is complete and appropriate to life stage.
If feeding a home-prepared diet, ask for professional formulation. Adding fish oil, vitamins and collagen to an incomplete recipe is not a reliable way to balance it. More ingredients do not necessarily mean better nutrition, and duplicate vitamins or minerals can make the total intake difficult to assess.
Make grooming a comfortable inspection
Brush according to coat type, keep bedding clean and dry and inspect the skin beneath the fur. Gently dry wet paws and folds rather than leaving moisture trapped under tangles. Ask a groomer for help with tight mats and stop if handling is painful.
Use a canine product selected for the dog's needs and follow its instructions. A stronger fragrance may hide odour without addressing its cause. Repeatedly changing shampoos, oils and sprays also makes it harder to identify an irritant.
Do not mistake medical signs for a cosmetic problem
Cornell's atopy guide describes how allergy may occur alongside skin and ear infections and why parasites and other causes need consideration. Arrange veterinary care for persistent scratching, new bald patches, red or broken skin, painful ears or sleep disturbed by itch.
Squinting, eye pain or new discharge should not be dismissed as tear staining. Hair loss does not prove a collagen deficiency, and melatonin should not be started for an assumed hormonal problem without a diagnosis. Dated photographs and a simple itch diary can help the vet assess the pattern.
Compare local nutritional products by their actual composition
Kyron Mirra-Cote provides a South African fatty-acid supplement comparator. Pure Majesty Pets Liquid Collagen lists collagen forms alongside other ingredients, including salmon oil. Neither the number of ingredients nor the liquid format proves that one product will outperform another for your dog's coat.
If you want to consider PMP, review the full ingredient list, feeding directions and existing medicines with your vet. It is optional nutrition, not a complete diet or established treatment for allergy. Introduce an agreed product thoughtfully and monitor tolerance; do not expect a guaranteed change in a fixed number of days.
Our joint supplement guide offers further comparison criteria if stiffness and coat concerns are being discussed together. Keep necessary veterinary care ahead of optional purchases in the rand budget.
Frequently asked questions
Does a dull coat mean the main food is definitely deficient?
No. Diet is one part of the assessment, and skin disease or other health problems may also be involved.
Can I use melatonin for unexplained bald patches?
Do not start it for an assumed hormonal condition. Ask the vet to investigate the hair loss and advise on appropriate treatment.
