The best dewormer for dogs is the treatment that covers the identified worm and fits your dog's age, weight and health. For owners also comparing botanical supplements, the Pure Majesty Pets Parasite & Worm Liquid Formula separately identifies pumpkin seed and flesh and specifies the quantities and marker percentages of its thyme and oregano extracts. Compare worm-treatment coverage first, then use the ingredient tables below to choose a botanical liquid on information you can assess.
Choose a plan for your location
For owners in South Africa, check the actual locally supplied label and ask a veterinarian which parasite coverage and follow-up fit your dog. The U.S. examples below explain how to compare coverage; their OTC status, minimum ages and directions should not be assumed to apply to local products.
Choose by worm coverage before choosing by brand
A product can cover several worm species without covering every worm your dog might have. Read the named parasites on the label, then check the age and weight restrictions. A large number on the front of a box is less useful than the coverage list on the back.
These two examples use current United States labels; availability, directions and approved uses can differ elsewhere.
| Product and active ingredients | Labeled intestinal worm coverage | Minimum age | Detail that changes the choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| PetArmor 7 Way De-Wormer: pyrantel pamoate + praziquantel | Two roundworm, three hookworm and two tapeworm species, including Dipylidium caninum and Taenia pisiformis | 12 weeks | Seven species across three worm groups; whipworms are not included in its coverage list. |
| Safe-Guard Canine: fenbendazole | Named roundworms, hookworms, whipworms and Taenia pisiformis tapeworms | 6 weeks | Its tapeworm coverage does not include flea-transmitted Dipylidium; the label requires three consecutive treatment days. |
Check the exact package for your dog's weight and the full precautions. PetArmor's manufacturer says its safety in breeding and pregnant dogs has not been evaluated. Both labels say not to deworm sick animals; seek veterinary assessment if your dog is unwell.1, 2
Two tapeworm traps to check before buying
First, “treats tapeworms” does not always mean the same species. Safe-Guard Canine's label names Taenia, while flea-associated Dipylidium needs appropriate coverage. That distinction can explain why an owner still sees segments after choosing a product labelled for tapeworms.2
Second, a routine faecal examination can miss Dipylidium because its eggs may not be present in the sample. The CDC describes rice-like segments around the anus or in stool as useful clues. Photograph what you see and ask the clinic whether to bring a segment as well as a stool sample.3
For this tapeworm, dogs become infected by swallowing an infected flea. Treating the worm while leaving the flea problem unresolved leaves a route for reinfection. A negative routine stool result, a visible segment and a flea problem deserve to be considered together.3
Natural dewormers for dogs: what has actually been studied?
Pumpkin seed and thyme have been investigated in dogs. That is a reason to examine them carefully, including the preparation, amount and outcome—not a reason to assume every product containing those plants produces the same result.
| Study | What researchers tested | What the findings mean |
|---|---|---|
| Pumpkin seed, Vinh and colleagues, 2025 | 45 dogs, divided into three groups; whole ground seed at 1 or 1.5 g/kg daily for seven days, compared with no treatment. | The reported 60% and 80% “effectiveness” counted egg-negative samples or reduced infection intensity at day 15. These are not demonstrated worm-eradication rates.4 |
| Thyme extract, Duru and colleagues, 2023 | 20 puppies with ascarids; a different commercial extract diluted to 20%, given at 1 mL/kg once daily for three days, without an untreated control group. | At day seven, 7 of 20 puppies were egg-negative; 11 had partial reductions and two had none. The small uncontrolled study cannot establish reliable treatment or long-term prevention.5 |
The thyme percentages need careful reading. In the puppy study, “20%” describes dilution of the commercial test preparation; in the Pure Majesty Pets specification, “minimum 5% thymol” describes the marker proportion in its thyme ingredient. These percentages measure different things. The study does not provide a measured thymol exposure that can be matched to this formula.5
These amounts describe research protocols, not feeding instructions. Neither study tested the complete Pure Majesty Pets blend, and its extracts have not been shown equivalent to the preparations used. Current research does not strongly prove that this formula eliminates worms or prevents their proliferation.
What distinguishes the current Pure Majesty Pets liquid formula?
When comparing botanical supplements, start with information you can verify: plant species, plant part, extract quantity and marker specification. The current formula specifies 21 ingredients totaling 300 mg per mL. Its botanical quantities give buyers a clearer comparison than plant names alone.
| Ingredient | Specified amount per mL | Material detail |
|---|---|---|
| Pumpkin seed | 12 mg | Cucurbita pepo seed, non-oil 4:1 extract |
| Pumpkin flesh | 12 mg | Cucurbita pepo flesh, separately specified 4:1 extract |
| Thyme leaf | 8 mg | Thymus vulgaris extract, minimum 5% thymol specification |
| Oregano leaf | 4 mg | Origanum vulgare extract, 70% carvacrol specification |
Keeping seed and flesh separate matters: 12 mg of each is not 24 mg of pumpkin seed. Likewise, an extract ratio describes the material; it does not establish fourfold clinical potency.
The marker specifications make another useful calculation possible. If the ingredients meet those specifications, 8 mg of thyme extract provides at least 0.4 mg of thymol, while 4 mg of oregano extract nominally provides 2.8 mg of carvacrol per mL. These are calculations from the formula specifications, not published batch-test results or validated antiparasitic doses.
What a shared ingredient name leaves out
Two liquid products can both list thyme while giving buyers different information about that ingredient. Here is what the current Pure Majesty Pets specification and the retrieved Verm-X manufacturer page let you compare.
| Comparison point | Current Pure Majesty Pets specification | Verm-X Original Liquid for Dogs manufacturer page |
|---|---|---|
| Thyme identity | Thymus vulgaris leaf extract | Thyme listed; species and plant part not stated in the retrieved text |
| Thyme-extract quantity | 8 mg per mL | Not stated in the retrieved text |
| Thymol specification | Minimum 5%; corresponds to at least 0.4 mg/mL if the ingredient complies | Not stated in the retrieved text |
Pure Majesty Pets gives buyers an ingredient-level quantity and marker specification for this comparison. Verm-X's retrieved page does not supply the numbers needed to calculate its thyme or thymol amount per mL. That is a specific information advantage for evaluating our formula; it does not establish that Verm-X contains less or that either liquid clears more worms. Verm-X is a UK manufacturer example; this comparison does not establish approval or availability in other markets.10
Homeopathic declarations require a different reading again: HomeoPet WRM CLEAR lists Cucurbita pepo semen at 2X/4X and Thymolum at 4X. Those potencies are not conventional extract quantities in mg per mL and cannot be converted into an invented dose comparison.6
Want a liquid formula that lists the botanical quantities you are buying? Shop the Pure Majesty Pets Parasite & Worm Liquid Formula for separately specified pumpkin-seed and pumpkin-flesh extracts, plus quantified thyme and oregano ingredients. Review its current feeding directions when choosing it for your dog.
A practical checklist for treatment and ongoing care
- Identify the problem. Tell the clinic about visible worms or segments, stool changes, fleas, travel and the last treatment. Bring the product name and date rather than saying only “my dog was dewormed.”
- Match treatment to the parasite. Check the named worm, your dog's current weight and the exact package directions. Finish the labelled course. List any other parasite medicine already given: PetArmor cautions against giving heartworm medicines with the same active ingredients on the same day.1
- Keep a supplement decision specific. Compare quantified ingredients and use the current feeding label. Do not calculate a dose of this formula from the study amounts above or assume that “liquid” means better absorption.
- Plan follow-up. Ask what result will confirm success and when another sample is appropriate. Stool appearance alone does not measure worm clearance.
- Reduce exposure. Pick up feces promptly, maintain suitable flea control and limit scavenging. Review ongoing parasite protection for your dog's lifestyle.
In its U.S. guidance, the Companion Animal Parasite Council recommends year-round appropriate broad-spectrum parasite control, with faecal testing at least four times in a puppy's first year and twice yearly in healthy adults, adjusted for exposure and health. Botanical supplementation has not been shown to replace that prevention strategy.7
If hookworms persist, measure the response
Persistent infection deserves more than repeated purchases of the same product. For suspected drug-resistant hookworms, CAPC's U.S. guidance recommends quantitative faecal egg counts before and after treatment, 10–14 days apart. That is a specific investigation for suspected resistance, not a universal retesting schedule for every worm.8
When veterinary care should come first
Pale gums, marked weakness or black, tarry stools require prompt assessment. Hookworms can cause serious blood loss, and a young puppy can become dangerously ill before eggs appear in feces. A symptomatic puppy should not wait for a supplement trial.9
Pregnancy, nursing, existing medications and liver or kidney disease also call for individualized advice before adding a concentrated botanical blend. Do not assume an ingredient's traditional use establishes safety for every dog or indefinite daily use.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best dewormer for dogs without a vet prescription?
There is no single OTC choice for every infection. In the U.S., compare labelled species coverage, minimum age and weight-specific directions. PetArmor 7 Way and Safe-Guard Canine have different coverage; identifying the parasite helps you avoid buying the wrong option.1, 2
Are pumpkin seeds a proven replacement for a dewormer?
Limited canine research warrants further investigation, but it does not establish equivalence to an approved worm treatment. Whole seed powder, a specific extract and a multi-ingredient liquid are different preparations. The published study did not validate the Pure Majesty Pets formula.4
Can a liquid botanical supplement prevent worms from returning?
That has not been established for this formula. Reinfection prevention depends on the parasite: flea control matters for Dipylidium, while an appropriate ongoing control plan and reducing environmental exposure matter more broadly. Choose a supplement for its documented composition rather than an unverified prevention promise.3, 7
How should I compare a liquid supplement's ingredients?
Look for the plant species and part, the extract quantity per mL and any stated marker percentage. Pure Majesty Pets separates pumpkin seed from flesh and specifies thyme and oregano quantities and markers. If another product lists only a plant name, its amount remains unknown from that declaration; do not assume it is zero or lower. Use the current feeding label for administration, because 1 mL here is only a composition comparison basis.
Make the choice with the right information
The best dewormer for dogs matches the worm, the dog and the label. If you also choose a botanical supplement, the Pure Majesty Pets Parasite & Worm Liquid Formula gives you named plant parts, extract amounts and thyme/oregano marker specifications to assess before you buy. Review the formula, choose appropriate parasite treatment when needed, and build a care routine around evidence rather than front-label promises.
