Dog ear and eye care in the Philippines: keep cleaning and treatment separate

English Cocker Spaniel with clean bright eyes and healthy ears in a sunlit bathroom - dog ear and eye cleaner for infection prevention

Ear wash and eye wash should never be treated as an all-in-one grooming product. In a Philippine household, a clear label and a quick explanation to everyone helping with the dog can prevent a serious mix-up. Start by asking whether the dog needs routine hygiene or assessment of a new problem.

Do not cover up pain with more cleaning

If the dog resists touching an ear, shakes its head repeatedly or has new discharge, contact the clinic. Explain whether there have been previous episodes and bring the medicines or cleaners already used. A musty smell does not prove which organism, if any, needs treatment.

Head tilt, balance problems, bleeding or marked pain should not lead to repeated home flushing. Ask for veterinary advice before putting anything into a sore ear. Leftover ear medication from another dog is not a substitute for examination.

Learn the ear routine once, then follow it consistently

The Cornell guide uses appropriate cleaner, gentle massage and removal of loosened debris, avoiding cotton buds in the canal. It also warns about irritation from excessive cleaning. Have your vet demonstrate what is suitable and how often.

Keep a towel and clean pads ready. Record when cleaning actually happened; “naligo na” does not necessarily mean the ear-care instructions were followed. Stop if it hurts, and do not improvise an alcohol, peroxide or essential-oil mixture.

Keep eye cleaning gentle and limited

A little residue on the surrounding fur is different from a dog holding an eye shut. Ask what product is appropriate for normal hygiene, use separate clean pads for each side and avoid contacting the eyeball or touching the bottle tip to it. Do not scrub stained fur until the skin is sore.

ACVO's dry-eye information explains that redness, discharge and rubbing may reflect an eye disorder. Seek prompt care for squinting, pain, cloudiness or a sudden vision change; cosmetic cleaning cannot determine the cause.

A useful Philippine product comparison

Pet Express lists Happy Life Pet Ear Wash 120 mL. Compare its full label and intended use with other ear-care options; its presence at a retailer is not evidence of a best-seller ranking or suitability for an infected ear.

Pure Majesty Pets Dog Ear Cleaner is also a 120 mL presentation, with ingredients listed including salicylic acid, aloe and panthenol. The separate Dog Eye Drops are marketed for non-medicated hygiene. Use only the product your vet considers appropriate for the intended area. Neither should replace prescribed infection treatment.

Two equally sized bottles are not equivalent formulas. Keep them in clearly marked places and retain the original packaging, especially when a sitter takes over.

Plan the budget around care, not only checkout

Check the final peso total, seller identity, expiry and delivery to your actual island or town. Follow storage and discard instructions, and do not buy a multi-bottle bundle before learning whether that routine is needed.

At the groomer, ask which products were applied and pass on veterinary instructions. If symptoms recur, bring that information to the clinic instead of changing brands repeatedly. A hygiene product cannot guarantee prevention or eliminate every future consultation.

Can I use one bottle for both areas?

No: do not put an ear cleaner into or near the eye. Check the exact intended use. Our eye warning-sign guide can help you prepare for a veterinary discussion, not replace it.
