A dog returning from a swim or sandy walk needs a comfortable clean-up, not a one-bottle treatment for ears and eyes. In New Zealand, include the right products and clear instructions in a bach or sitter kit, but first ask your vet which routine your dog actually needs.
Inspect before using a cleaner
Cornell's ear-care guidance distinguishes routine maintenance from treatment. Normal healthy ears may need cleaning only when dirt or debris is present; excessive cleaning can cause irritation. Swimming, bathing and a history of ear disease can change the individual plan.
Head-shaking, redness, odour, discharge or pain is a reason to contact the vet. Stop if handling hurts. A head tilt, loss of balance or severe illness should not wait for the end of a holiday. A suddenly uncomfortable ear may have a problem that a rinse cannot identify.
Use the method demonstrated for the product
Keep the bottle nozzle from sealing inside the canal and do not squeeze forcefully. Apply as directed, gently massage if tolerated, allow the dog to shake and wipe the accessible outer ear with a soft pad. Do not insert cotton buds or probe for debris.
Avoid household alcohol, peroxide and essential-oil mixes. Do not flush an ear with a suspected damaged eardrum unless a vet directs the appropriate care. If ear medicine is prescribed, ask how cleaning should be timed around it.
Compare New Zealand ear-care options accurately
Virbac New Zealand lists Epi-Otic as a routine ear cleanser for dogs and cats. Pure Majesty Pets Dog Ear Cleaner is a separate 120 mL otic product with a listed salicylic-acid and aloe-containing formula. Compare current labels and suitability, not an unsupported claim that one prevents every infection.
A cleanser is not interchangeable with prescribed antibiotic or antifungal treatment. Give a carer the original labelled bottle and the practice contact. Store it separately from eye-care products so that the destination on the label is unmistakable.
Keep eye-area hygiene separate
For ordinary residue on surrounding fur, use a clean, soft pad dampened with clean water and wipe gently without rubbing the eyeball. Use a new pad for each eye and avoid touching any bottle tip to the surface. Do not make homemade saline or apply bleach, peroxide or human redness-relief drops.
Squinting, holding an eye closed, cloudiness, thick discharge or apparent vision change warrants prompt care. Cornell's dry-eye explanation illustrates why discharge can be more than a cosmetic problem. Cleaning the fur does not diagnose or correct the reason tears are abnormal.
PMP Dog Eye Drops are a distinct non-medicated product to review with your vet, not an established treatment for infection or dry-eye disease. Read the eye warning-sign guide before treating a new symptom as ordinary grooming.
Frequently asked questions
Should I clean an already painful ear after a swim?
Stop and contact the vet. Pain changes the task from routine hygiene to assessing a possible medical problem.
What belongs in a sitter's cleaning kit?
Only the agreed products in their original bottles, clear individual instructions and a veterinary contact; keep ear and eye products separate.
