A brief paw clean can be ordinary grooming. Repeated licking that interrupts sleep, leaves the skin sore or changes how your dog walks is different. In India, muddy outings, household cleaners and warm surfaces may be relevant history, but none proves the cause. Start with the paw itself, not an assumption that the dog needs an “anti-yeast” supplement.
Allergy and yeast are not competing diagnoses
Allergic inflammation may make paws itchy, while yeast or bacteria can complicate already irritated skin. A foreign body, damaged nail, injury or contact irritant can also cause licking. One suddenly painful paw deserves particular attention; several affected feet do not automatically confirm an allergy.
VCA's pododermatitis guidance explains that paw inflammation has multiple causes. A corn-chip smell or brown saliva staining cannot diagnose yeast. Cytology can identify organisms, but it does not itself diagnose a food or environmental allergy.
When to call your vet
Arrange prompt assessment for persistent licking, swelling, sores, discharge or recurrent problems. Bleeding, severe pain, an embedded object or inability to bear weight needs urgent advice. Do not wait one or two weeks when the paw is damaged, and do not pull out something deeply lodged between the toes.
Photograph changes without forcing the paw open. Record which feet are affected, recent walks, cleaning products, parasite prevention, diet and medicines. Consider anxiety only after painful or itchy medical causes have been assessed; both can coexist.
Gentle measures that do not replace treatment
If the paws are merely dirty and intact, gently remove surface dirt with plain water and dry between the toes without rubbing. Avoid hot surfaces and known irritants. Ask about safe protection from licking if the skin is being damaged.
Skip vinegar soaks, essential oils, peroxide, human antifungal creams and homemade antiseptic dilutions. Do not leave damp socks or tight boots on as an improvised treatment. A specific medicated wash or antifungal needs the vet's directions, including contact time and follow-up.
Food allergy requires a controlled plan
Switching to grain-free food does not establish or treat a food allergy. A veterinary elimination diet and, when appropriate, a controlled challenge are different from repeatedly changing flavours. Bring every treat and supplement label because extra proteins can interfere with the trial.
Indian comparisons and Pure Majesty Pets
Virbac Episoothe is an oat-based shampoo listed in India; suitability for sore paws still needs approval. Venky's Glossy Coat Plus is a fatty-acid and biotin nutritional option, not an antifungal.
Pure Majesty Pets Itchy Skin Supplement lists oils and other nutritional components. It is not a substitute for prescribed itch or infection treatment, and total oil is not the same as declared EPA/DHA. PMP Yeast Support includes tyndallised S. boulardii, a nonliving postbiotic—not a live probiotic or proven paw antifungal.
Review the whole routine
Keep one household record and follow the veterinary recheck plan. Compare rupee cost only for additions with a clear purpose. Improvement should be judged by comfort and skin findings, not a promised supplement timetable; recurring licking needs the underlying cause managed.
Frequently asked questions
Does paw odour prove a yeast infection?
No. Odour and staining are clues, not a diagnosis. A veterinary examination and appropriate skin samples help identify the cause.
Can I soak sore paws in apple cider vinegar?
Avoid it. Acidic home mixtures may irritate damaged skin; use only the cleaning or treatment plan approved by your vet.
