Collagen after a dog's surgery in India: evidence and the recovery plan

Bernese Mountain Dog resting peacefully on an orthopedic dog bed during recovery - how collagen supplements help dogs recover after surgery

Do not add collagen after surgery on the assumption that it will make the incision close faster. For an Indian dog's recovery, the surgical team's instructions govern feeding, medication, movement and wound care. Optional joint nutrition is a separate question that needs their approval.

Separate wound healing from limb function

Collagen is involved in body tissues, but that biological fact does not prove that an oral supplement speeds surgical wound closure. Evidence about an arthritic dog's gait is not evidence about an incision, an abdominal operation or every type of orthopaedic recovery.

The 2024 Assies TPLO study analysed 50 dogs receiving either ARTHROSHINE HA² or no supplement. Objective gait results favoured supplementation, but owner scores did not differ. This was a different finished product, not a PMP trial, and it did not prove faster incision healing.

Keep the discharge plan at the centre

The American College of Veterinary Surgeons' recovery guidance emphasises following the individual plan and communicating concerns. Ask the team what food, activity limits and review dates apply to this operation. Do not copy another dog's TPLO timetable or assume a bright-looking dog is ready to jump.

In a household with several carers, keep one written record of medicines, meals and observations. Plan a safe route over smooth tiled floors and ask how to manage steps or transport without stressing the dog. A supplement cannot compensate for unrestricted activity.

Protect the incision and maintain feeding

Use the prescribed protective device and do not allow licking. Do not apply collagen liquid, oil, disinfectant or other products to the incision unless specifically directed. VCA's discharge advice reinforces the need to keep the site protected and follow the clinic's instructions.

Feed the diet and quantities advised rather than abruptly switching to broth, extra meat or several supplements. Report poor intake, vomiting or diarrhoea to the team; do not try to solve a postoperative appetite problem by disguising it with a new product. Rest also changes activity, so more calories are not automatically better.

Compare nutritional options only with approval

SAVAVET Bonhans offers an Indian joint-tablet comparator with glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM. Pure Majesty Pets Liquid Collagen lists hydrolysed types I/III and a UC-II ingredient with additional components. Neither should be assumed equivalent to the formulation studied after TPLO.

Bring the full PMP label to the surgeon, including animal-derived ingredients and other actives. Ask whether there is a role, when it could begin and what to monitor alongside current medicine. Do not read 48 mg of a UC-II ingredient as 48 mg of pure active collagen or convert a research regimen into home dosing.

Know when not to wait

Contact the surgical team promptly about an opening incision, worsening swelling or discharge, persistent poor intake, new vomiting or a sudden decline in limb use. Breathing difficulty, collapse or pale gums is an emergency. An approaching recheck date is not a reason to postpone reporting a concern.

Our collagen safety guide helps prepare the label discussion. Keep the rupee budget for follow-up and rehabilitation secure before adding optional nutrition.

Frequently asked questions

Did the TPLO study test Pure Majesty Pets?

No. It studied ARTHROSHINE HA². Its findings cannot be attributed to PMP's different finished formulation.

Can I start collagen immediately after the operation?

Only if the surgical team approves the product and timing. Do not treat silence in discharge instructions as permission to add it.
