Straight answer: hemp seed oil and CBD oil are not the same thing for dogs — hemp seed oil is pressed from seeds and contains only trace CBD, while CBD oil is made from hemp extract and states its cannabinoids in mg, and if you want real CBD, the oil we recommend is Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength CBD Oil for Dogs, with 30 mg CBD + 25 mg CBDA + 5 mg CBG in every mL (60 mg/mL) carried in MCT oil, not hemp seed oil. Hemp seed oil is a food oil: mostly omega-6 and plant omega-3 fats, useful as nutrition, with no CBD dose behind it. CBD oil is the product that has been studied in dogs for joint comfort, stress and itch. The problem is the word "hemp": it is printed on both, so many owners buy one while thinking they bought the other. Below: the side-by-side difference, a 30-second label check, what each oil can and cannot do, and the dose in mL.

If you already know you want CBD and are comparing brands, our ranking of the best CBD oil for dogs in India compares six oils sold in India on mg per mL, THC and cost per mg. This guide answers the question that comes first: is the "hemp oil" in your basket actually CBD? A bottle labelled "hemp oil 10,000 mg" may contain 10,000 mg of seed oil and almost no cannabinoids. A bottle labelled "hemp extract" may contain CBD but not say how much. A dog owner cannot dose either one by body weight. Here is how to tell them apart in under a minute.

| Hemp seed oil | CBD oil | |
|---|---|---|
| Part of the plant | Seeds, cold-pressed | Extract of the flowers and leaves, diluted in a carrier oil |
| CBD content | Seeds do not naturally contain CBD; seed ingredients carry only trace amounts picked up during harvesting and processing (FDA) | Stated on the label in mg per bottle and, on a good label, in mg per mL |
| Main components | Fats: over 80% polyunsaturated, mainly linoleic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (plant omega-3), ratio about 2:1 to 3:1 (Callaway, 2004) | Cannabinoids (CBD, sometimes CBDA, CBG, CBC) plus the carrier: MCT, hemp seed or olive oil |
| Typical label words | "Hemp seed oil", "Cannabis sativa seed oil", often just "hemp oil" | "Cannabidiol", "CBD", "hemp extract", "full spectrum", "broad spectrum", "isolate" |
| Studied in dogs for | Nutrition only: digestibility and blood markers when added to food (Xin et al., 2022), gut bacteria over 90 days (Klinsoda et al., 2026) — no trials for comfort, calm or itch | Joint comfort, stress during car travel or separation, itch, absorption and long-term tolerance |
| Dosed by | Teaspoons, like any food oil | mg per kg of body weight, measured in mL |
| THC | Trace at most | Depends on the type: full spectrum can contain up to 0.3%; isolates have no intentionally added THC |
In one line: hemp seed oil is a nutrition oil; CBD oil is a cannabinoid supplement. They come from the same plant species but from different parts of it, and they do different jobs.
Why "Hemp Oil" Labels Are So Confusing
Three different products are sold to dog owners under the word "hemp":
- Hemp seed oil. Pressed from seeds. Rich in fats, no meaningful CBD. Often labelled simply "hemp oil", and sometimes with a big mg number that refers to the oil itself, not to any cannabinoid.
- Hemp extract oil. An extract of the plant that does contain CBD, but the label may say "hemp extract" or "full spectrum" without giving a CBD figure per mL. You know CBD is in there; you do not know how much.
- CBD oil with named cannabinoids. The label states each cannabinoid in mg — for example, our oil lists 30 mg CBD, 25 mg CBDA and 5 mg CBG in every mL. This is the only one of the three you can dose by your dog's weight.
Our own product is called "Hemp CBD for Dogs" for that reason: the cannabinoids are hemp-derived, and the CBD is quantified. The word "hemp" alone tells you which plant was used, not what is in the bottle.
The 30-Second Label Check
Turn the bottle around and look for these words. They tell you which product you are holding.
| What the label says | What it most likely is | Can you dose CBD by weight? |
|---|---|---|
| "Hemp seed oil" or "Cannabis sativa seed oil" as the only hemp ingredient | Hemp seed oil | No — trace CBD only |
| "Hemp oil 5,000 mg" (or 10,000 mg, 50,000 mg) with no cannabinoid named | Usually hemp seed oil; the mg is the oil, not CBD | No |
| "Hemp extract" or "full spectrum hemp" with no mg of CBD | A CBD-containing extract of unknown strength | No — ask the brand for the batch COA |
| "CBD" or "cannabidiol" with total mg but no bottle volume | CBD oil | Only if you can find the mL |
| Each cannabinoid in mg per mL + a batch certificate of analysis (COA) | CBD oil with a clear label | Yes |
One more check: look at the carrier. Some CBD oils use hemp seed oil as the carrier, which is fine — the CBD comes from the extract added to it. Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil uses coconut-derived C8/C10 MCT oil with sunflower lecithin instead, the type of base associated with good CBDA absorption in a Cornell pharmacokinetic study (Wakshlag et al., 2020).
What Hemp Seed Oil Can and Cannot Do for a Dog
Hemp seed oil is a respectable food oil. Over 80% of its fat is polyunsaturated, mainly the essential fatty acids linoleic acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid, or ALA (a plant omega-3), with smaller amounts of GLA and stearidonic acid (Callaway, 2004). That is why it shows up in "skin and coat" products. The few dog studies are nutrition studies: in 25 small dogs, adding 1–2% hemp oil to the diet slightly improved nutrient digestibility and some blood markers (Xin et al., 2022), and a 90-day study saw shifts in gut bacteria with a 2% hempseed oil coating on food (Klinsoda et al., 2026).
Three limits are worth knowing:
- Plant omega-3 is not fish-oil omega-3. The omega-3s linked to skin and joint support in dogs are EPA and DHA. In a 6-week study, dogs given ALA-rich flaxseed oil saw their EPA and DHA levels fall, while dogs given a marine oil saw them rise (Dominguez et al., 2021). Hemp seed oil's omega-3 is ALA too, so do not count on it as a substitute for fish oil.
- It will not act like CBD. With only trace cannabinoids, hemp seed oil has no basis for the comfort or calm claims sometimes printed on "calming hemp" products.
- It adds calories. Like any oil, a teaspoon is roughly 40 calories — about a tenth of the resting energy needs of a 10 kg dog. Too much fat at once can cause soft stool, and dogs with a history of pancreatitis need their vet's approval before any added oil.
For itchy skin specifically, the international guidelines on canine atopic dermatitis say oral essential fatty acids are not useful for acute flares, because any benefit takes weeks to appear; they can be one part of long-term skin and coat care (Olivry et al., 2015).
What CBD Oil Has Been Studied For in Dogs
| Area | What the dog research found | Our deeper guide |
|---|---|---|
| Joint comfort and mobility | Lower owner-rated pain scores with a CBD/CBDA oil at 2 mg/kg twice daily (Gamble et al., 2018); some later trials positive, others negative | CBD oil for dogs with arthritis · CBD for dog pain |
| Occasional stress | Mixed: lower stress measures during car travel and short separations in some studies, no effect in others | CBD for dog anxiety |
| Itch | Lower owner-rated itch scores vs placebo with a CBD/CBDA oil; skin lesions unchanged (Loewinger et al., 2022) | See our itch relief guide for allergic dogs |
| Absorption | CBDA reached serum levels 2–3 times higher than CBD after oral dosing (Wakshlag et al., 2020) | CBD dosage chart in mL |
Honest note: these studies used other companies' CBD products, not Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil, and none tested hemp seed oil as a CBD source. They show what CBD has been studied for — not a guaranteed result for any single product.

Which One Fits What You Want for Your Dog?
- You want support for joint comfort and everyday mobility → a CBD oil with measured mg, at an amount close to what was studied. Pair it with structural joint support such as our liquid collagen for dogs (462 mg Type I & III collagen + 48 mg UC-II per serving).
- You want support for calm before a car ride, visitors or time alone → a CBD oil given about 2 hours before the event; see our CBD for dog anxiety guide for the timing.
- You want a shinier coat or more essential fatty acids → this is a diet question. A marine omega-3 source provides EPA and DHA directly; hemp seed oil provides mostly omega-6 and ALA. Ask your vet which fits your dog's food.
- You bought "hemp oil" for comfort or calm → check the label against the table above. If no cannabinoid is listed in mg, it is very likely seed oil.
Dose in mL: CBD Oil vs Hemp Seed Oil
Hemp seed oil has no cannabinoid dose to calculate — it is portioned like a food oil. CBD oil is dosed by body weight. Most published dog studies used about 2 mg/kg of CBD (or CBD + CBDA) twice a day. With Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil at 60 mg of total cannabinoids per mL, that looks like this:
| Dog weight | mL per dose (2 mg/kg) | mL per day (twice daily) | Cost per day |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4.5 kg | 0.15 mL | 0.3 mL | ₹16 |
| 10 kg | 0.33 mL | 0.67 mL | ₹35.56 |
| 25 kg | 0.83 mL | 1.67 mL | ₹88.89 |
| 40 kg | 1.33 mL | 2.67 mL | ₹142.22 |
Transparency note: the studies dosed CBD or CBD + CBDA; this table uses our oil's 60 mg/mL of total cannabinoids (CBD + CBDA + CBG). Cost per day is based on ₹3,200 per 60 mL bottle. Your veterinarian should confirm the amount, especially if your dog takes any medication. Every weight, a first-week half-dose plan and a conversion for other bottle strengths are in our CBD dosage chart for dogs.
Safety: Hemp Seed Oil vs CBD Oil
- Hemp seed oil: the main issues are digestive (soft stool, especially if introduced quickly) and calories. Dogs prone to pancreatitis or on a low-fat diet need their vet's approval first.
- CBD oil: generally well tolerated in healthy dogs in controlled studies, including daily use for six months (Bradley et al., 2022). The most consistent lab finding is a rise in the liver enzyme ALP; drowsiness and soft stool can occur. CBD is processed by liver enzymes that also handle many drugs, so ask your vet first if your dog takes any medication.
- THC: dogs are far more sensitive to THC than people (Merck Veterinary Manual). Full-spectrum extracts can contain up to 0.3% THC; our oil uses isolates with no intentionally added THC and a certificate of analysis on every batch.
- Regulation: in India, cannabis-derived products are regulated, and some brands sell their pet CBD oils on veterinary prescription only — talk to your vet before you start. No CBD or hemp product, including ours, is intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent disease.
Why Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil Fits Owners Who Want Real CBD
- Every cannabinoid in mg per mL — 30 mg CBD, 25 mg CBDA, 5 mg CBG. No guessing whether "hemp" means seed oil or extract.
- 3,600 mg of cannabinoids per 60 mL — the mg on our bottle is cannabinoids, not carrier oil.
- CBD + CBDA — the pairing used in most of the Cornell-led dog studies.
- MCT oil with sunflower lecithin as the carrier, not hemp seed oil.
- No intentionally added THC — isolates, with a certificate of analysis on every batch.
- About ₹88.89 a day for a 25 kg dog at the studied 2 mg/kg twice daily — see how that compares brand by brand in our best CBD oil for dogs in India comparison.
- Bacon flavour, made in North America under GMP standards, with free shipping, duties and taxes included.
Red Flags on "Hemp" Products for Dogs
- A huge mg number with no cannabinoid named — "hemp oil 50,000 mg" is almost always seed oil.
- "Calming hemp" or "hemp for joints" with only hemp seed oil or hemp seed powder in the ingredients.
- "Hemp extract" with no mg of CBD and no batch COA.
- Total mg without bottle volume — you cannot calculate mL per dose.
- Promises to cure or replace medication — no hemp or CBD product is approved to treat disease in dogs.
- Human CBD gummies or edibles — wrong strength, and xylitol or THC are dangerous for dogs.
The Bottom Line
Hemp seed oil and CBD oil share a plant, not a purpose. Hemp seed oil is a fatty-acid food oil with trace cannabinoids. CBD oil is the product studied in dogs for joint comfort, stress and itch — and it only helps you if the label tells you how many mg of CBD are in each mL.
Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength CBD Oil for Dogs answers that question on the front of the bottle: CBD + CBDA + CBG, all quantified, 60 mg/mL, no intentionally added THC, at about ₹88.89 a day for a 25 kg dog.

Is hemp oil the same as CBD oil for dogs?
No. Hemp seed oil is pressed from the seeds and contains only trace CBD. CBD oil is made from hemp extract and states its cannabinoid content in mg. If a "hemp oil" label names no cannabinoid in mg, it is most likely hemp seed oil.
Which is better for dogs, hemp oil or CBD oil?
They do different jobs. Hemp seed oil is a source of omega-6 and plant omega-3 fats. CBD oil is the product that has been studied in dogs for joint comfort, occasional stress and itch. If you want CBD, choose an oil that lists each cannabinoid in mg per mL.
Do vets recommend hemp oil for dogs?
Hemp seed oil is generally treated as a food oil, and many vets prefer a marine omega-3 source when a dog needs EPA and DHA. In India, cannabis-derived products are regulated and some pet CBD oils are sold on veterinary prescription only, so talk with your vet before using CBD products. Ask your vet before adding either one.
Does hemp oil actually calm dogs?
Hemp seed oil contains only trace cannabinoids, so there is no basis to expect a calming effect from it. CBD oil has mixed research for occasional stress: some studies found lower stress measures during car travel and short separations at about 2–4 mg/kg, others found no effect.
Is hemp oil good for dogs with itchy skin?
Hemp seed oil supplies essential fatty acids, which can be one part of long-term skin and coat care, but guidelines say oral fatty acids are not useful for acute itchy flares. In one trial, a CBD/CBDA oil lowered owner-rated itch scores compared with placebo. A dog with persistent itching needs a vet exam.
What are the side effects of hemp oil in dogs?
Hemp seed oil can cause soft stool if introduced quickly and adds calories, about 40 per teaspoon. Dogs with a history of pancreatitis need their vet's approval. CBD oil can raise the liver enzyme ALP and cause drowsiness or soft stool, and it can interact with medications.
How do I know if a hemp product contains CBD?
Look for "CBD" or "cannabidiol" with an amount in mg per mL, and a batch certificate of analysis. "Hemp seed oil" or "Cannabis sativa seed oil" means seed oil. A big mg number with no cannabinoid named usually refers to the oil, not to CBD.
