Collagen for dogs after surgery in Ireland: what to discuss with your surgeon

Bernese Mountain Dog resting peacefully on an orthopedic dog bed during recovery - how collagen supplements help dogs recover after surgery

After a dog's operation, the aim is to follow a recovery plan that fits the procedure. Collagen is not a shortcut to an earlier return to walks or faster incision closure. For owners in Ireland, ask the surgical team about any supplement before adding it, even if the dog used a similar product before the operation.

What the postoperative research actually concerns

Wound closure, bone healing and comfortable walking are different outcomes. A biological role for collagen in tissues does not establish that a particular oral liquid improves all three.

A small TPLO study by Assies and colleagues found favourable objective gait results with ARTHROSHINE HA² compared with no supplement, but no difference in owner scores. It was not a PMP study or proof of faster surgical incision healing.

That distinction matters when reading a label or headline. Evidence from a different finished product, selected dogs and one orthopaedic procedure cannot be applied automatically to every operation.

Use the discharge instructions, not a generic calendar

The ACVS postoperative guide describes recovery as coordinated care with the veterinary team. Confirm activity restrictions, pain treatment, feeding and recheck dates before going home. Ask what changes should trigger an earlier call.

Plan safe access to the garden and car, and prevent unsupervised steps or jumping if restricted. A dog keen to resume a familiar walk is not necessarily ready. Do not change the rehabilitation schedule because a supplement is described as supporting connective tissue.

Protect the wound and the nutritional basics

Keep the prescribed protective collar or other approved device in use. Do not let the dog lick the incision or apply oral collagen, oils or household disinfectants to it. VCA's surgical guidance explains why wound products require veterinary direction.

Follow the advised diet rather than replacing meals with broth or adding several powders. Tell the team about poor appetite, vomiting, diarrhoea or trouble taking medicine. During restricted activity, avoid assuming that recovery always means feeding extra calories.

Where an Irish product comparison belongs

If the surgeon considers optional joint nutrition appropriate, YuMOVE through Petstop Ireland offers a tablet reference point with ingredients such as glucosamine and green-lipped mussel; check the current pack.

PMP Liquid Collagen lists hydrolysed types I/III plus a UC-II ingredient and other components. It is not automatically equivalent to the TPLO study product. Ingredient mass also does not establish pure active collagen content or a transferable research dose.

Review the full formula, animal-derived ingredients and compatibility with postoperative medicines or a prescribed diet. Ask whether it has a role at all, when to start and what would count as a reason to stop or review.

Report concerns before the next appointment

Contact the surgical team about an incision opening, worsening swelling, discharge, persistent poor intake or a sudden change in limb use. Breathing difficulty, collapse or pale gums requires emergency attention. Do not wait for a supplement's supposed response window.

Our collagen safety guide helps prepare the discussion. Keep follow-up, transport and rehabilitation in the euro budget before choosing an optional product.

Frequently asked questions

Can a dog return to exercise sooner because it takes collagen?

Not on that basis. Activity increases depend on the surgeon's assessment and recovery plan, not supplement use.

Does research on gait prove a surgical wound will close faster?

No. They are different outcomes, and results from a particular postoperative product cannot be transferred to PMP without direct evidence.
