CBD Oil for Dogs With Cancer in Ireland: What the Research Shows

CBD oil for dogs with cancer: Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength CBD Oil with 30 mg CBD, 25 mg CBDA and 5 mg CBG per mL

Straight answer: CBD oil does not treat, shrink or slow cancer in dogs — no clinical trial has shown that — but it can have a place in a comfort routine your vet or oncologist approves, and if they agree, the oil we recommend is Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength CBD Oil for Dogs, with 30 mg CBD + 25 mg CBDA + 5 mg CBG in every mL, no intentionally added THC and a certificate of analysis on every batch. The research on CBD and canine cancer is almost entirely in lab dishes and mice. The one placebo-controlled trial in dogs with cancer (19 dogs with lymphoma on chemotherapy) found the oil was well tolerated, but it did not improve quality of life and caused more mild appetite loss. So the honest role for CBD is supportive: everyday comfort, mobility and calm, alongside — never instead of — the treatment plan.

If you are still comparing oils in general, our guide to the best CBD for dogs explains how to judge labels, evidence and safety testing. This page answers a harder, narrower question that many families ask after a diagnosis: what CBD can and cannot do for a dog with cancer, what the studies really found, and how to bring it up with your vet without putting the treatment plan at risk.

What the Research Shows on CBD and Cancer in Dogs

Search results make CBD sound like a cancer therapy. The published dog research does not support that. Here is every study we could find that tested CBD against canine cancer cells or in dogs with cancer, and what each one actually measured. None of them used our oil.

Study What was tested What was found
Henry et al., 2021 CBD and CBDA on 5 canine cancer cell lines in the lab CBD slowed cell growth far more than CBDA at 2.5–10 µg/mL; results with the chemo drug vincristine were additive or synergistic, with doxorubicin less clear. The authors called for clinical trials
Inkol et al., 2021 CBD with chemotherapy drugs on canine bladder (urothelial) cancer cells Synergy with mitoxantrone and vinblastine, but antagonism with carboplatin — CBD reduced the drug's effect in the dish
Medina & Torres, 2026 (systematic review) All published studies on CBD's anti-tumour potential in canine cancer 8 studies, all preclinical: 7 cell studies and 1 mouse study. No clinical anti-tumour study in dogs with cancer. Effective lab concentrations were higher than the blood levels oral CBD reaches in dogs
Lejeune et al., 2025 19 dogs with lymphoma on CHOP chemotherapy; CBD/CBDA hemp oil 5 mg/kg twice daily or placebo for 5 weeks; randomised, double-blind No serious side effects and no bloodwork differences. No quality-of-life benefit; mild appetite loss was more common with CBD. Doxorubicin exposure was not significantly changed in the CBD group during one cycle
Lima et al., 2026 20 female dogs having mammary tumour surgery; full-spectrum cannabis oil (CBD + THC) or placebo before surgery More sedation and less anaesthetic needed. Rescue pain relief 3/10 vs 6/10 dogs, not statistically significant. Anaesthesia only; no tumour or long-term comfort outcomes

Honest note: the lab results are real, but a cell in a dish is not a dog. The 2026 review points out that oral doses of 1–10 mg/kg give blood levels well below the concentrations that affected cancer cells, so reaching them would take far higher doses with more side effects. The only trial in dogs undergoing cancer treatment was small, lasted one chemotherapy cycle and stopped before reaching its planned size. None of this is a promised result for any product, including ours.

Can CBD Be Given During Chemotherapy?

Sometimes — but only with the oncologist's agreement, because the evidence cuts both ways:

  • One drug looked unaffected in one trial. In the lymphoma study, dogs taking CBD/CBDA oil did not have a significant change in doxorubicin exposure within the group, and there were no serious adverse events (Lejeune et al., 2025). That covers one drug, one cycle and 9 dogs on CBD.
  • Some combinations worked against each other in the lab. CBD reduced carboplatin's effect on bladder cancer cells (Inkol et al., 2021), and in one lymphoma cell study CBD was helpful at low doses but antagonistic at high doses with CHOP drugs (Medina & Torres, 2026). That is lab data only, but it is exactly why an oncologist wants to know.
  • CBD affects some of the liver enzymes dogs use to clear medicines. In dog liver-enzyme tests, CBD and CBDA inhibited certain CYP enzymes (Court et al., 2024). Most chemotherapy drugs have never been tested with CBD in dogs, so interactions are possible and simply unknown.
  • Appetite is already fragile during treatment. The lymphoma trial saw more mild appetite loss with CBD. If your dog is eating less or has loose stools, tell your vet before adding anything; our guide to dog diarrhoea lists the warning signs that need a same-day call.

Our guide to whether CBD is safe for dogs covers the general side-effect picture — loose stools, drowsiness and a rise in the liver enzyme ALP — and CBDA for dogs explains the CBDA part of oils like ours, including the doxorubicin data.

In Ireland, animal remedies are overseen by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and the HPRA; talk to your vet before starting.

Where CBD Can Fit: Comfort, Not Cancer Treatment

For many dogs living with cancer, the goal of the week is simple: eat, move around, rest well and enjoy the family. That is where a measured CBD oil may have a supportive role, as part of a plan your vet manages:

  • Everyday mobility. Many dogs with cancer are older and also have arthritis. CBD's most-studied use in dogs is osteoarthritis, where an oil given at about 2 mg/kg twice daily improved owner pain and activity scores compared with placebo over four weeks (Gamble et al., 2018). We go through every trial in CBD oil for dogs with arthritis and CBD for dog pain.
  • Calm during stressful routines. Frequent hospital visits, car rides and handling are hard on some dogs. Our guide to CBD for dog anxiety covers what the studies found and how to time it.
  • Not a pain medicine for cancer pain. Cancer pain can be severe and needs prescription pain control. CBD is not a substitute; see what you can give a dog for pain for what is safe and which human painkillers are dangerous, and CBD vs gabapentin for dogs if your dog is on gabapentin.
  • Not a proven appetite or nausea aid in dogs. The Merck Veterinary Manual describes the evidence for cannabinoids and appetite as limited, and the effects of CBD on food intake as inconclusive. Ask your vet about approved options for appetite and nausea first.

For context from human medicine: the American Society of Clinical Oncology recommends against using cannabis or cannabinoids as a cancer-directed treatment outside clinical trials in adults (Braun et al., 2024). The human medicines approved for chemotherapy nausea, such as dronabinol, are THC-based, not CBD — and THC is the cannabinoid that makes dogs wobbly and sedated.

A Practical Plan to Discuss With Your Vet or Oncologist

  1. Bring the bottle and its COA. Your vet needs the mg of CBD, CBDA and THC per mL, plus the contaminant results. Our guide to full spectrum vs isolate CBD for dogs explains why THC content matters for a dog that may already be sedated by other medicines.
  2. Share the full medication list, including chemotherapy, pain medicines, anti-nausea drugs, steroids and any other supplements.
  3. Ask about timing. Some oncologists prefer to avoid new supplements during chemotherapy cycles or around surgery; others accept CBD with monitoring. Follow their plan.
  4. Ask for baseline bloodwork if your dog has not had a recent panel, including liver values.
  5. Start low, with food. Many vets start at half of the study amount for the first week. The full weight chart and a first-week plan are in our CBD dosage chart for dogs.
  6. Keep a daily log: appetite, energy, walking, sleep, vomiting or loose stools. Stop and call your vet if appetite drops.
  7. Never pause or skip treatment because you started an oil.

How Much CBD Is a Study-Level Amount?

The dog arthritis studies used about 2 mg/kg twice daily; the lymphoma trial used 5 mg/kg twice daily under close hospital monitoring. Here is the 2 mg/kg reference with Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil at 60 mg of total cannabinoids per mL — a starting point for the conversation with your vet, who sets the actual amount and may go lower for a dog on several medicines.

Dog weight mL per dose (twice daily) Cost per day
4.5 kg (10 lb) 0.15 mL €0.15
10 kg (22 lb) 0.33 mL €0.33
25 kg (55 lb) 0.83 mL €0.83
36 kg (80 lb) 1.2 mL €1.20
50 kg (110 lb) 1.67 mL €1.66

Measure with a 1 mL oral syringe and mix into a small portion of food your dog will finish. At €29.95 for 60 mL with free shipping, duties and taxes included, one bottle lasts about 90 days for a 10 kg (22 lb) dog and about 36 days for a 25 kg (55 lb) dog. Lumps, Seizures and Other Signs That Need a Vet First

CBD is never a reason to wait. Any new lump should be checked, and a quick needle sample is often all it takes to know what it is; our guide to bumps on a dog's skin has a quick-ID table and the signs that need a prompt visit. If your dog has a brain tumour or has had a seizure, read CBD for dog seizures first: seizure medicines must never be changed without your vet. For itchy skin during treatment, see CBD for dog allergies and itching, and make sure the bottle is real CBD with our hemp oil vs CBD oil for dogs label check.

Nutrition matters during treatment too. Pure Majesty Pets also makes liquid collagen for dogs (462 mg Type I & III collagen + 48 mg UC-II per serving); as with any supplement, ask your oncologist before adding it.

Why Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil Fits a Comfort Routine for Dogs With Cancer

  • Every cannabinoid listed separately — 30 mg CBD, 25 mg CBDA and 5 mg CBG per mL — so your vet or oncologist knows exactly what is being added to the medication list.
  • No intentionally added THC. Both dog studies in cancer patients used products containing some THC, which adds sedation and wobbliness. Ours is made from isolates.
  • A certificate of analysis on every batch for cannabinoids, THC and contaminants — the document your vet will ask for.
  • 60 mg/mL, so a study-level amount is small and easy to measure — 0.33 mL for a 10 kg (22 lb) dog — and easy to scale down for a cautious start.
  • Simple ingredients: coconut-derived MCT oil, sunflower lecithin, mixed tocopherols and natural bacon flavour, with no xylitol and no added water or glycerin.
  • About €0.83 a day for a 25 kg (55 lb) dog, made in North America under GMP standards, with free shipping, duties and taxes included.

Our formula has not been tested in a clinical trial, and the studies above used other products. If your vet agrees it belongs in your dog's comfort routine, see Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil for Dogs →

Red Flags With CBD for a Dog With Cancer

  • Any product or person claiming CBD cures, shrinks or fights cancer. No clinical study in dogs shows that, and no CBD product is an approved veterinary medicine for use in dogs.
  • Advice to pause chemotherapy, radiation or surgery to "try CBD first".
  • Online "high-dose protocols" aiming for lab concentrations — they are untested in dogs and raise side-effect and interaction risks.
  • THC-containing or human products, which can sedate dogs and may contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs.
  • A label with no mg per mL or no batch COA, or a COA without THC results.
  • Your dog eating less, vomiting, very drowsy, or with yellow gums after starting CBD — call your vet the same day.

The Bottom Line

CBD oil for dogs with cancer is a comfort question, not a cure question. The anti-cancer effects seen so far are in lab dishes and mice, at concentrations oral doses do not reach, and the only trial in dogs undergoing chemotherapy found good tolerance but no quality-of-life benefit and more mild appetite loss. What CBD can offer is a measured, well-labelled addition to your dog's everyday routine for mobility and calm — added only with your vet's or oncologist's agreement, started low and tracked daily.

If your vet agrees, Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength CBD Oil for Dogs gives you 30 mg CBD and 25 mg CBDA in every mL, no intentionally added THC and a COA on every batch, for under €1 a day for most dogs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does CBD oil help dogs with cancer?

Not as a cancer treatment. Lab studies found CBD can slow canine cancer cells in a dish, but no clinical trial has shown it shrinks or slows cancer in dogs. Its realistic role is supportive comfort — mobility and calm — alongside the treatment plan, with your vet's agreement.

Can CBD shrink tumours in dogs?

There is no evidence that it does. A 2026 systematic review found only cell and mouse studies, and noted that effective lab concentrations were higher than the blood levels oral CBD reaches in dogs. Have any lump checked by your vet rather than trying CBD first.

Can my dog take CBD during chemotherapy?

Only if your oncologist agrees. In a trial of 19 dogs with lymphoma on CHOP chemotherapy, a CBD/CBDA oil caused no serious side effects and did not significantly change doxorubicin exposure in one cycle, but lab studies show CBD can work against some chemo drugs, such as carboplatin. Interactions with most chemo drugs are untested.

Does CBD help appetite in dogs with cancer?

Not reliably. In the lymphoma trial, mild appetite loss was more common in dogs given CBD, and the Merck Veterinary Manual describes the effects of CBD on food intake as inconclusive. Ask your vet about approved appetite and anti-nausea options.

How much CBD should I give a dog with cancer?

Your veterinarian should set the amount. Arthritis studies used about 2 mg/kg twice daily; with a 60 mg/mL oil that is about 0.33 mL per dose for a 10 kg (22 lb) dog and 0.83 mL for a 25 kg (55 lb) dog. Many vets start lower in dogs on several medicines.

Is CBD safe for dogs with cancer?

In the one placebo-controlled trial in dogs with cancer, it was well tolerated over five weeks, with no serious adverse events and no bloodwork differences. The side effects to watch are appetite loss, loose stools, drowsiness and a rise in the liver enzyme ALP. Avoid THC-containing and human products.

Can CBD replace pain medication for a dog with cancer?

No. Cancer pain often needs prescription pain control, and CBD has not been tested as a replacement. Keep every prescribed medicine as directed and ask your vet whether CBD can be added for everyday comfort.

Can CBD help a dog with cancer feel calmer?

CBD has been studied for calm during occasional stress in dogs, with mixed results, but not specifically in dogs with cancer. Some families use it around vet visits and car rides with their vet's agreement. Note any change in sleepiness and report it.
