Quick answer: Dasuquin for dogs is a Nutramax joint supplement built on glucosamine hydrochloride, low-molecular-weight chondroitin sulfate and avocado/soybean unsaponifiables (ASU). Its label amounts and weight-based dosing are published and easy to check. The honest caveat for owners in Ireland: independent research on glucosamine and chondroitin in dogs is mixed, so treat Dasuquin as one part of a joint plan rather than the whole plan.
Most pages about Dasuquin list the same three ingredients and stop. This one works from the amounts Nutramax prints on its own product facts panels, then sets them beside what independent veterinary trials measured — including the studies that did not favour glucosamine and chondroitin. Dasuquin is an American brand from Nutramax Laboratories, so in Ireland it is something you will usually source through an online seller or your own vet practice rather than lift off a shop shelf, and label amounts are printed in milligrams and pounds. For the wider picture, start with our guide to dog joint and hip health.
What is Dasuquin for dogs and how does it work?
Dasuquin is a daily joint supplement from Nutramax Laboratories Veterinary Sciences, sold as chewable tablets and soft chews in two size formulas: small to medium dogs (under 60 lbs / 27 kg) and large dogs (60 lbs / 27 kg and over). Three actives carry it, each with a Nutramax specification code printed on the label:
- Glucosamine hydrochloride (FCHG49) — a building block the body uses for cartilage and joint fluid.
- Sodium chondroitin sulfate (TRH122) — described by Nutramax as low-molecular-weight, on the premise that a smaller molecule absorbs more readily.
- Avocado/soybean unsaponifiables (NMX1000 ASU) — what separates Dasuquin from the company's simpler glucosamine-chondroitin product. The label states the powder is standardised to a minimum of 30% unsaponifiables.
ASU is the mechanistically interesting one. In cell-culture work it reduced expression of TNF-α, IL-1β, COX-2 and iNOS, and lowered prostaglandin E2 and nitric oxide production, in articular chondrocytes and monocyte/macrophage-like cells (Au et al., 2007) — a plausible rationale for supporting the cartilage matrix, but laboratory data rather than proof a dog feels better on a retail product.

What is actually in Dasuquin? The published label amounts
Nutramax publishes full per-tablet amounts, which makes Dasuquin unusually easy to audit:
| Per chewable tablet | Dasuquin small/medium | Dasuquin large | Advanced small/medium | Advanced large |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Glucosamine HCl (FCHG49) | 600 mg | 900 mg | 600 mg | 900 mg |
| Sodium chondroitin sulfate (TRH122) | 250 mg | 350 mg | 250 mg | 350 mg |
| ASU powder (NMX1000, min. 30% ASU) | 45 mg | 90 mg | 45 mg | 90 mg |
| MSM | — | — | 400 mg | 800 mg |
| Boswellia serrata extract | 20 mg | 40 mg | within the 70 mg / 140 mg blend | |
| Green tea extract | 16 mg | 32 mg | within the 70 mg / 140 mg blend | |
| Curcuma longa (NMXCC95) + alpha-lipoic acid | — | — | within the 70 mg / 140 mg blend | |
| Manganese (as manganese ascorbate) | — | — | 3 mg | 5 mg |
One detail worth correcting, because it circulates widely: boswellia and green tea extract are already in the standard tablet. They are not what Advanced adds. The "other ingredients" list also includes brewers dried yeast and soy protein isolate, which matters for dogs that react to soy or yeast.
What is the difference between Dasuquin and Dasuquin Advanced?
The three core actives are identical, at identical amounts. Advanced keeps that base and layers on MSM (400 mg small/medium, 800 mg large), a 70 mg or 140 mg proprietary blend of boswellia standardised for AKBA, Curcuma longa standardised for curcuminoids (NMXCC95), green tea extract (EGCG) and alpha-lipoic acid, plus manganese ascorbate.
Nutramax lists Advanced as a veterinarian-exclusive formulation while standard Dasuquin is sold online and in stores — that is why Advanced is missing from retail shelves. The extras are also split across variants: Dasuquin with MSM, Soft Chews for Senior Dogs (adds alpha-lipoic acid and omega-3s), Dasuquin with Omega-3s, Advanced with ESM (adds eggshell membrane). If you want omega-3s or eggshell membrane, you have to buy the variant carrying them.
Cosequin, from the same company, is the simpler glucosamine-and-chondroitin product without ASU. We keep that comparison separate so it can be done properly — see Dasuquin vs Cosequin, or the standalone Cosequin for dogs review.
Does Dasuquin actually work? What the studies show
The evidence falls into three tiers.
The broadest evidence review. A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis covering 57 articles and 72 trials in canine and feline osteoarthritis found the clearest analgesic efficacy for omega-3-enriched diets and omega-3 supplements, a weak effect for collagen, and what its authors called a marked non-effect for chondroitin-glucosamine nutraceuticals — recommending those products no longer be relied on for osteoarthritis pain management (Barbeau-Grégoire et al., 2022).
A modern controlled trial. A 2023 prospective, block-randomised, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial in 75 owned dogs with hip osteoarthritis used peak vertical force — an objective force-plate measure rather than an owner questionnaire. At four and six weeks, carprofen and two marine lipid extracts (PCSO-524, derived from green-lipped mussel, and EAB-277) improved significantly versus placebo. The glucosamine and chondroitin arm did not (Front Vet Sci, 2023).
The supportive trial. In 35 dogs with hip or elbow osteoarthritis, oral glucosamine hydrochloride with chondroitin sulfate improved pain, weight-bearing and severity scores significantly by day 70, with slower onset than carprofen (McCarthy et al., 2007) — work led from University College Dublin, which is why Irish vets still see it cited. Its design matters: positive-controlled, no placebo arm, small sample.
Where ASU sits. In a surgical dog model, ASU at 10 mg/kg per day reduced structural cartilage changes, with inhibition of iNOS and MMP-13 (Boileau et al., 2009). Check the dose basis before extrapolating: a 40 lb (18 kg) dog on two small/medium tablets gets 90 mg of ASU powder standardised to at least 30% ASU — roughly 1.5 mg/kg of ASU, well below that 10 mg/kg. Nutramax's own case rests on cell-culture research indicating its three-part combination stimulates cartilage matrix production more than glucosamine and chondroitin alone: a reasonable rationale, not clinical proof.
A fair summary: Dasuquin is well made, transparently labelled, very well tolerated, and may support joint comfort in some dogs — but veterinary nutrition reviews put weight management, controlled exercise and long-chain omega-3s (EPA and DHA) ahead of glucosamine-chondroitin products inside a multimodal plan.
What are the side effects of Dasuquin in dogs?
Serious adverse effects are uncommon. What does happen is usually digestive and usually early: soft stool, gas or occasional vomiting in the first days, and reduced appetite in some sensitive dogs. Giving it with a meal settles most mild upset.
Ingredient-specific checks first. Glucosamine is commonly shellfish-derived, so keep that in mind for a dog with a known shellfish sensitivity, and the tablets contain soy protein isolate alongside the soybean-derived ASU. Speak to your veterinary surgeon before starting if your dog is diabetic (they may want to watch glucose monitoring), takes an anticoagulant, is pregnant or nursing, or has liver or kidney disease. Stop and call for facial swelling, hives, persistent vomiting or any sudden change.
When a supplement is the wrong tool. Sudden refusal to bear weight, yelping when touched, a hot or swollen joint, fever, or a fast decline over days all call for an exam, not a chew. Joint supplements are slow, long-term support; acute pain needs a diagnosis.
How much Dasuquin should a dog get by weight?
Dosing is by body weight, with a higher initial period followed by a lower maintenance level. These are the amounts Nutramax publishes for the chewable tablets, in tablets per day — the same schedule applies to Advanced tablets. The pack is printed in pounds, so the kilogram equivalents are given alongside for convenience:
| Dog's weight | Initial 4–6 weeks | Maintenance level | Formula |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 10 lbs (under 4.5 kg) | ½ tablet | ½ tablet | Small to medium |
| 10–29 lbs (4.5–13 kg) | 1 tablet | ½ tablet | Small to medium |
| 30–59 lbs (13.6–27 kg) | 2 tablets | 1 tablet | Small to medium |
| 60–120 lbs (27–54 kg) | 2 tablets | 1 tablet | Large dogs |
Three things the pack tells you that most articles skip. The maintenance level can be used long-term in healthy dogs, and a dog on maintenance can go back up to the initial level temporarily — before a busy weekend on the hills, for instance. The published table stops at 120 lbs (54 kg), so for a giant breed above that, ask your vet. And soft chews and tablets are not interchangeable counts: follow the schedule on the pack you bought.

If your dog already gets a joint chew, supplemented food or treats with added glucosamine, add the totals before stacking another full dose — our guide to glucosamine and chondroitin for dogs shows how.
How long does Dasuquin take to work?
The label answers this directly: allow four to six weeks, though some dogs respond sooner. Research timelines line up — the 2023 force-plate trial measured outcomes at four and six weeks, and the 2007 trial reached significance by day 70.
- Weeks 1–2: expect nothing measurable. This is the tolerance window; watch the stool, not the stairs.
- Weeks 4–6: the manufacturer's own response window, and where the dose can drop to maintenance.
- Weeks 8–10: decision point. No change by now is worth a conversation about pain control, imaging or a different approach.
Make it concrete. Before you start, note three behaviours — how they rise after a nap, whether they take the stairs in one go, whether they hesitate before jumping into the car — and score each weekly. Owner impressions drift; a three-line log does not.
Buying joint support for your dog in Ireland
A few practical points specific to ordering from Ireland, none of which change the science above.
- Stock is the first hurdle. Dasuquin is a Nutramax product made for the American market; the Advanced formulation is sold through veterinary practices there, so an Irish owner who wants it is generally buying a US pack through an online seller. Check the pack you receive rather than a website screenshot, because label amounts and formats vary by variant.
- Price it in euro, and price the full year. Joint support is a long-term, daily cost, not a one-off purchase. Work out the cost per day at the maintenance level, in euro, including any delivery or import charges, before committing to a brand.
- Watch for charges at the door. Anything shipped from outside the EU can attract duty and VAT on arrival unless the seller has already settled them. Pure Majesty Pets ships free worldwide on a DDP basis — duties and VAT are paid up front, so nothing is collected from you at delivery in Ireland.
- Damp winters make consistency matter. Irish winters are long, wet and mild rather than icy, which tends to mean shorter, wetter walks and more time lying still indoors for an older dog. A daily chew given year-round, plus keeping weight off the joints, does more than a supplement started only when a dog is visibly stiff.
- Your vet is the anchor. Anything beyond food supplements — pain relief, imaging, a diagnosis — goes through a registered veterinary practice. Bring your weekly log to the consultation; it is more useful than a recollection.
Dasuquin alternatives for dogs
If the evidence changes your shortlist, the alternatives group cleanly. Weight management and controlled low-impact exercise stay the best-supported and cheapest interventions. Long-chain omega-3s carry the strongest supplement evidence in canine osteoarthritis, and green-lipped mussel-derived marine lipids performed well on an objective measure in the 2023 trial. Undenatured type II collagen and eggshell membrane are further categories to raise with your vet. If your practice has suggested a newer single-molecule chew instead, our review of Rejensa for dogs weighs what its published evidence does and does not cover. And before any brand's badge sways the shortlist, it helps to know what a vet recommended joint supplement for dogs claim actually certifies — which, legally, is nothing. For a wider survey of formats, see our roundup of the best joint supplements for dogs.
Our own approach reflects that spread rather than one hero ingredient. The Pure Majesty hip and joint supplement for dogs lists 18 active ingredients in a single chew: the glucosamine HCl, chondroitin sulfate and MSM base, plus green-lipped mussel, UC-II undenatured type II collagen, eggshell membrane, omega-3, hyaluronic acid, turmeric standardised to 95% curcumin, boswellia, ginger and antioxidant support. Categories split across several Dasuquin variants sit in one daily chew. For dogs that spit chews out, liquid glucosamine for dogs delivers glucosamine, chondroitin and MSM as drops measured to weight and mixed into food. For an older dog whose stiffness is part of a wider slowing down, senior dog mobility chews target the same joints with a senior formulation, and vet-strength liquid collagen for dogs adds collagen support for connective tissue, skin and coat in the same daily routine.
Every Pure Majesty formula is made in North America in a GMP-certified facility with a certificate of analysis on each batch, delivery to Ireland is free worldwide and DDP with nothing to pay on arrival, and the range holds a rating of about 4.6/5 across roughly 1,085 reviews.
Being straight about the trade-off: Nutramax publishes exact milligrams per tablet and we do not publish per-chew milligrams. The table compares ingredient breadth and format, not dose equivalence.
| Criteria | Dasuquin (standard) | Dasuquin Advanced | Pure Majesty hip & joint chews |
|---|---|---|---|
| Core actives | Glucosamine HCl, chondroitin, ASU | Same three, unchanged amounts | Glucosamine HCl, chondroitin, MSM |
| Additional actives | Boswellia, green tea extract | MSM, boswellia/turmeric/green tea/ALA blend, manganese | 18 actives total, incl. green-lipped mussel, UC-II collagen, eggshell membrane, hyaluronic acid |
| Marine omega-3 source | Only in the Omega-3s / Senior variants | Only in the Advanced Soft Chews / ESM variants | In the single formula |
| Per-unit amounts published | Yes, full mg per tablet | Yes, with a blend total | Ingredient list published; per-chew mg not published |

| Availability in Ireland | US brand, via online sellers | US veterinarian-exclusive formulation | Direct online, free DDP delivery |
| Evidence to weigh | Glucosamine-chondroitin evidence is mixed; the ASU rationale is largely mechanistic | Includes categories that performed better in recent canine trials; per-chew amounts not disclosed | |
No single product suits every dog. The one that helps is the one your dog will eat daily, given long enough to matter. Compare formats across our dog joint and hip supplements.
Frequently asked questions
Is Dasuquin worth it for dogs?
It is well tolerated, transparently labelled, and may support joint comfort in some dogs, which makes it a reasonable choice — but recent canine trials favour omega-3s and marine lipid extracts over glucosamine-chondroitin products for osteoarthritis pain. On a limited budget, weight control and vet-directed pain management come first.
Can you buy Dasuquin in Ireland?
It is an American Nutramax product rather than a brand stocked routinely on Irish shelves, so it is usually bought through an online seller, and the Advanced formulation is a veterinarian-exclusive line in the United States. Check availability and the exact variant with the seller, and confirm whether duty and VAT are included in the price before you order.
Do you need a prescription for Dasuquin?
No. Standard Dasuquin is a supplement sold over the counter and online. Dasuquin Advanced is listed by Nutramax as a veterinarian-exclusive formulation, so you buy it through a clinic rather than a shelf, but it is not a prescription drug.
Is Dasuquin Advanced better than regular Dasuquin?
It is broader, not stronger at the core. The glucosamine, chondroitin and ASU amounts are identical; Advanced adds MSM, a boswellia-turmeric-green tea-alpha-lipoic acid blend and manganese ascorbate. Whether that breadth helps your individual dog has not been established by independent trials.
Can I give Dasuquin with other joint supplements?
Sometimes, but check the totals first. Glucosamine and chondroitin from chews, supplemented foods and treats all add up, and doubling up wastes money at best. Ask your vet before combining products.
Can Dasuquin replace pain medication?
No. It is a supplement, not an analgesic, and should not be used in place of medication your vet has prescribed. Fitting joint support alongside a prescribed plan is a decision to make with your vet.
How long should I give Dasuquin before deciding it is not working?
The label suggests four to six weeks initially. Eight to ten weeks of consistent daily dosing with no change in your logged behaviours is a sensible point to reassess with your vet.
