VetriScience Perio Support is an American brushless dental powder that UK owners usually meet through imports and online marketplaces rather than on the shelf at their local practice. If you are weighing it up against the kelp powders that dominate British pet shops, this review sets out exactly what is in the jar, what the published evidence supports, where the formula is thin, and whether importing it is worth the bother.
Disclosure: we sell a dog dental powder, so we have a commercial interest here. Everything below about VetriScience comes from the published product label and peer-reviewed literature, both linked so you can check us.
Why this matters more in Britain than you might think
The single best dataset on canine periodontal disease anywhere is British. The RVC's VetCompass programme examined the records of 22,333 dogs under UK primary veterinary care and found a one-year period prevalence of periodontal disease of 12.52% — while noting that studies of dogs examined under general anaesthetic report far higher figures, because conscious exams miss most of it (O'Neill et al., Journal of Small Animal Practice, 2021). The same study found the highest odds in Toy Poodles, King Charles Spaniels, Greyhounds and Cavaliers — breeds heavily represented in British households.
Brushing remains the gold standard, but it only works if it happens daily, and most homes stop. That is the gap brushless powders are sold into.
Inside VetriScience Perio Support: the ingredient panel
The published active panel, per 2.5 g (about one teaspoon), from the manufacturer's filed label:
| Active ingredient | Per 2.5 g | Stated role |
|---|---|---|
| Natural zeolites | 500 mg | Mineral matrix intended to interfere with plaque formation |
| Probiotic blend (L. acidophilus, E. faecium, B. subtilis, L. casei, L. fermentum, L. plantarum) | 355 mg | Live bacteria intended to shift oral microbial balance |
| Cranberry powder | 25 mg | Polyphenols associated with bacterial anti-adhesion |
| Yucca schidigera extract | 7 mg | Saponins, commonly used for odour |
| Taurine | 1.25 mg | Amino acid |
| Zinc (as zinc ascorbate) | 0.8 mg | Mineral associated with breath odour control |
Credit where it is due: this is a transparent, quantified panel, which is more than several competitors manage. But the formula is essentially one large mineral dose plus one large bacterial dose — 855 mg of the 2.5 g scoop — with everything else in single- or double-digit milligrams.
What the research supports — and what it doesn't
- The probiotic angle has genuine, recent canine data. A 2025 randomised study in Animals found a heat-treated Lactiplantibacillus plantarum CECT 9161 postbiotic on kibble was associated with reduced plaque build-up and shifts in the canine oral metagenome (PubMed 40509083). A second 2025 Animals paper reported a postbiotic cut the volatile sulphur compounds behind canine oral malodour by 22% from baseline within seven days (p = 0.002), and by 27% versus placebo across the full 14-day trial in 24 dogs (Sordillo et al., Animals 2025;15(11):1596). Both were run by ingredient companies — worth knowing — but this is the strongest argument in Perio Support's favour.
- Zeolites are the weak link. Widely used as binders; controlled canine oral-health trials showing dietary zeolites reduce plaque or calculus appear to be absent.
- Zinc at 0.8 mg is token. Zinc salts do work for breath odour in human oral care, but at concentrations applied directly to the tooth surface.
- No seaweed, no enamel mineral. Absent is Ascophyllum nodosum — the ingredient at the heart of the kelp powders British owners know best. A double-blind, placebo-controlled trial in 60 small-breed dogs found the seaweed group had a significantly lower combined plaque index than placebo at 90 days (1.67 ± 0.81 vs. 2.71 ± 1.36; p < 0.001), with lower calculus and volatile sulphur compound scores (Gawor et al., Frontiers in Veterinary Science 2018;5:168). Also absent is hydroxyapatite, backed by a 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis in the Journal of Dentistry on remineralisation in human enamel (PubMed 40107597).
How it compares for a UK buyer
| Mechanism | VetriScience Perio Support | Kelp-only powders (e.g. ProDen PlaqueOff) | Pure Majesty Pets Dog Dental Powder |
|---|---|---|---|
| Named actives | 6 | 1 | 12 |
| Ascophyllum nodosum | No | Yes | Yes (8%) |
| Hydroxyapatite (enamel support) | No | No | Yes (15%) |
| GOX/LPO enzyme system | No | No | Yes (0.6%) |
| Oral postbiotic | Live probiotics (355 mg) | No | Probiotic lysate (0.3%) |
| Zinc for breath | Yes (0.8 mg) | No | Zinc citrate (0.6%) |
| Widely stocked in the UK | Import / marketplace | Yes | Online |
We are not neutral, so read that as a claim about label composition, which anyone can verify, not about outcomes, which nobody has measured head to head. Our guide to dental supplements for dogs compares the categories without the sales pitch, and dog tartar vs plaque explains why one mechanism rarely covers both problems.
Using a brushless powder properly
- Dose by weight, with food. Perio Support's own chart runs from ¼ tsp per meal for dogs up to roughly 7 kg to 2 tsp above roughly 54 kg, and the label advises giving it during or after eating.
- Introduce gradually over about a week.
- Judge it over 8–12 weeks. Breath changes first; plaque and calculus are cumulative.
- Start from a clean baseline. The seaweed trial above began with a professional scale and polish for every dog.
- See your vet for a red gum line, a loose or fractured tooth, pawing at the mouth or refusing food. In the UK, dental treatment under general anaesthetic is a veterinary procedure and no powder substitutes for it.
Habit is the hard part — our dog dental care routine and wider dog dental care guide cover it.
VetriScience Perio Support FAQ
Can I buy VetriScience Perio Support in the UK?
It is a UK product and is not routinely stocked by British retailers or veterinary practices. UK owners generally buy it through international marketplaces, which means import costs, longer shipping and no local customer service. That practicality is worth weighing against formulas already distributed in Britain.
Is VetriScience Perio Support safe for dogs?
The label carries standard supplement cautions rather than product-specific warnings: safe use in pregnant or breeding animals has not been established, give during or after a meal to reduce the chance of gastrointestinal upset, and stop and consult your vet if your dog's condition worsens. The same questions apply to any powder — see is dog dental powder safe.
How does it compare to ProDen PlaqueOff?
Opposite premises. PlaqueOff, far more familiar to British owners, is essentially a single-ingredient Ascophyllum nodosum product — the ingredient with the strongest published canine plaque and calculus dataset. Perio Support has no seaweed but a substantial live probiotic dose PlaqueOff does not. Our write-up of plaque off for dogs goes deeper.
Will it replace brushing or a scale and polish?
No, and the manufacturer does not claim it will — it is positioned for use between veterinary cleanings. No powder removes hardened calculus below the gum line.
Does it help with bad breath?
Its zinc and yucca target odour, and the probiotics target the bacteria producing volatile sulphur compounds. Persistent odour can signal periodontal disease or a non-dental problem — see dog bad breath.
Where we land
VetriScience Perio Support is a credible, transparently labelled product whose probiotic-forward approach has aged well. For a British buyer the case is weaker than for an American one: you are importing a formula that omits the seaweed with the best canine dental evidence and contains no enamel-support mineral.
If you would rather cover several mechanisms in one ten-second daily habit, our dog dental powder combines hydroxyapatite, Ascophyllum nodosum, a GOX/LPO enzyme system, zinc citrate, green tea and an oral probiotic lysate in one scoop you sprinkle on food — brushless care designed to support daily oral hygiene and help freshen breath.
