CBD vs Gabapentin for Dogs in the UK: Can You Give Both?

CBD vs gabapentin for dogs: Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength CBD Oil with 30 mg CBD, 25 mg CBDA and 5 mg CBG per mL

Straight answer: CBD and gabapentin are not interchangeable — gabapentin is a prescription drug your vet doses for nerve pain, chronic pain, seizures or situational fear, while CBD is a hemp supplement studied mostly as an add-on — and if your vet agrees to add CBD to a gabapentin plan, the oil we recommend is Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength CBD Oil for Dogs, with 30 mg CBD + 25 mg CBDA + 5 mg CBG in every mL, no intentionally added THC and a certificate of analysis on every batch. Many dogs are given both. Three dog studies have looked at CBD in dogs that were already on gabapentin, and none reported a serious problem with the combination; the side effect to expect is extra drowsiness or wobbliness. Never stop or reduce gabapentin because you started an oil — that decision belongs to your vet.

CBD vs Gabapentin at a Glance

Gabapentin CBD oil
What it is A human prescription drug (originally for epilepsy) used extra-label in dogs A cannabinoid extracted from hemp, sold as a supplement
Who decides the dose Your veterinarian; prescription only No approved veterinary dose for dogs; your vet should still set the amount
Common reasons used in dogs Nerve-related and chronic pain, add-on for seizures, fear before storms or vet visits Joint comfort and mobility, calm during occasional stress (the studied uses)
How it is cleared Mostly in urine; about a third converted to N-methylgabapentin in dogs Mainly by liver enzymes (CYP family)
Typical schedule 2–3 times daily; it leaves the body quickly Twice daily with food in most dog studies
Most common side effects Sleepiness, wobbliness Loose stools, drowsiness, a rise in the liver enzyme ALP
Monitoring Kidney function matters; do not stop abruptly in epileptic dogs Baseline and follow-up liver values, especially with other daily drugs

The short version: gabapentin is a medicine with a prescriber, and CBD is something you add to a plan, not something you swap in. Your vet may also discuss NSAIDs and other options; our overview of arthritis medicine for dogs explains where each one usually fits.

What Gabapentin Does for Dogs (and What the Evidence Shows)

Gabapentin calms overactive nerve signalling by binding to calcium channels on nerve cells. It is not approved as a veterinary medicine for dogs, but vets have used it for years as an extra-label medicine, mostly for nerve-type pain, as part of long-term arthritis plans, as an add-on for seizures and, at higher single doses, before stressful events.

The dog research is thinner than its popularity suggests:

  • After surgery: adding gabapentin to standard pain control did not significantly improve most pain scores after forelimb amputation (Wagner et al., 2010) or after disc surgery (Aghighi et al., 2012).
  • Storm fear: in a placebo-controlled crossover study of 18 dogs, a single 25–30 mg/kg dose given about 90 minutes before a storm lowered owner-rated fear responses; wobbliness was the most frequent side effect (Bleuer-Elsner et al., 2021).
  • Chronic arthritis pain: it is widely used as part of a multimodal plan, but there is no large placebo-controlled trial of gabapentin alone for canine osteoarthritis.

That is not a reason to stop it. Many dogs clearly do better on a plan that includes gabapentin, and your vet sees your dog. It simply means neither option has the strong evidence base owners often assume.

What CBD Does for Dogs (and What the Evidence Shows)

CBD's dog evidence centres on osteoarthritis. In the most-cited trial, a CBD + CBDA oil at about 2 mg/kg twice daily improved owner pain and activity scores over four weeks compared with placebo (Gamble et al., 2018). Other studies were mixed, and some found no difference. We go through every trial in CBD for dog pain and, for joints specifically, CBD oil for dogs with arthritis.

Two things to keep in mind: those studies used other companies' products, often containing some THC, and no trial has tested Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil. The studied amount is the useful part — it gives you and your vet a reference point.

Can Dogs Take CBD With Gabapentin? The 3 Studies That Combined Them

No study has been designed to test the CBD + gabapentin interaction itself. But three studies gave CBD to dogs that were already taking gabapentin, which is the closest real-world evidence available. None of them used our oil.

Study Dogs Gabapentin and CBD What was found
Brioschi et al., 2020 21 dogs with osteoarthritis, 12 weeks, randomised, no placebo oil All dogs: gabapentin (10 then 5 mg/kg twice daily) + amitriptyline + an NSAID or prednisone. CBD group added CBD 2 mg/kg twice daily Owner pain and quality-of-life scores were better in the CBD group. Sleepiness and mild wobbliness in 1 CBD dog and 2 control dogs, gone once gabapentin was lowered to 5 mg/kg
Kogan et al., 2020 32 dogs with osteoarthritis pain completed, open-label pilot, no control group 23 dogs were on gabapentin at the start; CBD-rich hemp oil dose adjusted by the vet Under veterinary supervision, 10 of the 23 stopped gabapentin and 11 had it reduced. ALP rose on average
Lyons et al., 2025 42 dogs after TPLO knee surgery, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled All dogs: opioids, nerve blocks, an NSAID and gabapentin. Added 20:1 CBD:THC extract at 2 or 5 mg CBD/kg, or placebo No significant difference in pain or function vs placebo. No serious adverse events; mild vomiting or diarrhoea in 7 cases

Honest note: Brioschi had no placebo oil and Kogan had no control group, so owner expectations could explain part of the improvement. The Kogan authors could not tell whether dogs needed less gabapentin because of better comfort, less sedation, or both. The one fully blinded trial, after surgery, found no added benefit on top of a strong pain protocol. None of this is a promised result for any product, including ours.

What all three do show is that, in these dogs, giving CBD alongside gabapentin did not produce a serious safety signal. The pattern is the familiar one from our guide to whether CBD is safe for dogs: some extra sleepiness and a liver-enzyme rise worth checking.

In the UK, CBD products for animals fall under the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD); talk to your vet before starting.

Does CBD Interact With Gabapentin?

A direct interaction study in dogs does not exist, so here is what the separate pieces say:

  • Different clearance routes. In dogs, gabapentin is mostly excreted in urine, with about 34% converted to N-methylgabapentin (Radulovic et al., 1995). CBD's known drug interactions in dogs run through liver CYP enzymes (Court et al., 2024). Gabapentin is not one of the CYP-dependent drugs flagged in that work, which makes a blood-level interaction less likely — but it has not been measured.
  • Added drowsiness is the realistic risk. The prescribing information for the human CBD medicine Epidiolex warns that other sedating drugs can increase sleepiness. Gabapentin's own main side effects are sleepiness and wobbliness, so the two can stack, especially in the first days and in small or senior dogs.
  • Kidneys matter for gabapentin. Because it leaves through the urine, dogs with kidney disease may keep it in their system longer. Tell your vet about kidney values before any change.
  • Other drugs in the mix. Dogs on gabapentin often also take NSAIDs, tramadol, amitriptyline or seizure medicines. Those are the combinations your vet will look at most closely; tramadol in particular was affected by CBD in dog liver-cell tests.

If gabapentin is part of a seizure plan, read CBD for dog seizures first. Gabapentin must never be stopped suddenly in an epileptic dog, because that can trigger withdrawal seizures.

Can CBD Replace Gabapentin?

Not on your own. The only dogs in the research who came off gabapentin did so in an uncontrolled study, with a vet examining them and adjusting doses step by step. Abrupt changes can bring back pain, and in epileptic dogs can trigger seizures. The sensible order is: keep the prescribed plan, add CBD only if your vet agrees, give it a few weeks with notes, and let your vet decide whether anything else can change.

If you are earlier in the process and still asking what options exist for a sore dog, our guide to what you can give a dog for pain lists what is safe, what needs a vet and which human painkillers are dangerous.

A Practical Plan for Using Both

  1. Bring the bottle and its COA to your vet. They need the mg of CBD, CBDA and THC per mL, not just a total. Our guide to CBDA for dogs explains why CBDA should be listed separately.
  2. Ask for baseline bloodwork if your dog has not had a recent panel, including liver and kidney values.
  3. Start low. Many vets begin with half of the study amount for the first week, given with food. The full weight chart and a first-week plan are in our CBD dosage chart for dogs.
  4. Keep gabapentin exactly as prescribed unless your vet changes it.
  5. Write down the same things daily: getting up, walking distance, stairs, sleep, wobbliness and appetite. Two to four weeks of notes tell your vet far more than an impression.
  6. Recheck. Your vet may repeat liver values after a few weeks of daily use and decide whether to keep, adjust or stop either product.

How Much CBD Is a Study-Level Amount?

The dog arthritis studies used about 2 mg/kg twice daily. Here is that amount with Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil at 60 mg of total cannabinoids per mL — a reference for the conversation with your vet, who sets the actual amount and may start lower for a dog already drowsy on gabapentin.

Dog weight mL per dose (twice daily) Cost per day
4.5 kg (10 lb) 0.15 mL £0.13
10 kg (22 lb) 0.33 mL £0.28
25 kg (55 lb) 0.83 mL £0.69
36 kg (80 lb) 1.2 mL £1.00
50 kg (110 lb) 1.67 mL £1.39

Measure with a 1 mL oral syringe and mix into a small portion of food your dog will finish. At £25.00 for 60 mL with free shipping, duties and taxes included, one bottle lasts about 90 days for a 10 kg (22 lb) dog and about 36 days for a 25 kg (55 lb) dog. Beyond Pills and Oils

Neither gabapentin nor CBD does the work of the basics. For arthritic dogs, weight control, non-slip floors, ramps and short, regular walks matter as much as anything in a bottle; our guide on how to help a dog with arthritis at home covers the changes vets recommend most. If you are also weighing nutritional support, compare ingredients in our joint supplements for dogs guide, and for collagen specifically our best collagen for dogs guide. Pure Majesty Pets also makes hip and joint chews for dogs and liquid collagen for dogs (462 mg Type I & III collagen + 48 mg UC-II per serving).

If gabapentin was prescribed for fear of storms or fireworks, the behaviour side matters just as much: see our thunderstorm and firework anxiety guide, CBD for dog anxiety, and melatonin vs CBD for dogs. Add one change at a time so you can tell what is helping.

Why Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil Fits a Gabapentin Plan

  • Every cannabinoid listed separately — 30 mg CBD, 25 mg CBDA and 5 mg CBG per mL — so your vet knows exactly what is being added to the medication list.
  • No intentionally added THC. THC causes wobbliness and drowsiness in dogs, the same effects you want to avoid stacking on top of gabapentin. Ours is made from isolates; see full spectrum vs isolate CBD for dogs for why that matters.
  • A certificate of analysis on every batch for cannabinoids, THC and contaminants.
  • 60 mg/mL, so a study-level amount is small and easy to measure — 0.33 mL for a 10 kg (22 lb) dog — and easy to scale down for a cautious start.
  • No xylitol. Simple ingredients: coconut-derived MCT oil, sunflower lecithin, mixed tocopherols and natural bacon flavour; no added water or glycerin.
  • About £0.69 a day for a 25 kg (55 lb) dog, made in North America under GMP standards, with free shipping, duties and taxes included.

Our formula has not been tested in a clinical trial, and the studies above used other products. Ready to talk to your vet about it? See Pure Majesty Pets CBD Oil for Dogs →

Red Flags When Combining CBD and Gabapentin

  • Your dog is much sleepier, wobblier or stumbling on stairs after starting CBD — call your vet; the plan may need adjusting.
  • Anyone suggesting you stop gabapentin because you bought an oil.
  • A CBD label with no mg per mL or no batch COA, or a COA without THC results.
  • Human gabapentin liquids or human CBD products, which can contain xylitol — toxic to dogs.
  • Hemp seed oil sold as CBD — it contains no meaningful CBD. Our hemp oil vs CBD oil for dogs guide shows the label check.
  • Claims that CBD cures, treats or replaces medication. No CBD product is an approved veterinary medicine for use in dogs.
  • New vomiting, poor appetite, yellow gums or a seizure — contact your vet the same day.

The Bottom Line

CBD vs gabapentin for dogs is not really a contest: gabapentin is a prescribed medicine with modest but real use in nerve pain, chronic pain plans and situational fear, and CBD is a supplement studied mostly as an add-on for joint comfort. Dogs in three studies took both without serious problems; extra drowsiness and a liver-enzyme rise are the things to watch. Keep the prescription as it is, add CBD only with your vet's agreement, start low and write things down.

If your vet agrees, Pure Majesty Pets Vet-Strength CBD Oil for Dogs gives you 30 mg CBD and 25 mg CBDA in every mL, no intentionally added THC and a COA on every batch, for under £1 a day for most dogs.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I give my dog CBD and gabapentin together?

Many dogs take both, but only with your veterinarian's agreement. Three dog studies gave CBD to dogs already on gabapentin and reported no serious adverse events; the side effect to expect is extra drowsiness or wobbliness. Keep gabapentin exactly as prescribed and start CBD at a low amount with food.

Is CBD better than gabapentin for dogs?

They are not direct substitutes. Gabapentin is a prescription drug used for nerve pain, chronic pain plans, seizures and situational fear; CBD is a supplement studied mostly as an add-on for joint comfort. Neither has a large body of high-quality dog trials, and no study has compared CBD alone with gabapentin alone.

Does CBD interact with gabapentin in dogs?

No study has measured it directly. In dogs, gabapentin is mostly cleared through the urine, while CBD's known interactions run through liver CYP enzymes, so a blood-level interaction seems less likely. Both can cause sleepiness, so the effects can add up. Tell your vet about every medicine your dog takes.

Can CBD replace gabapentin for my dog?

Do not make that change yourself. In one uncontrolled pilot study, some dogs had gabapentin reduced or stopped under close veterinary supervision after CBD was added. Stopping gabapentin abruptly can bring back pain and, in epileptic dogs, trigger withdrawal seizures.

How much CBD should I give a dog on gabapentin?

The dog arthritis studies used about 2 mg/kg twice daily. With a 60 mg/mL oil that is about 0.33 mL per dose for a 10 kg (22 lb) dog and 0.83 mL for a 25 kg (55 lb) dog. Many vets start at half that amount for the first week in a dog already on gabapentin. Your veterinarian should set the amount.

What are the side effects of combining CBD and gabapentin?

In the studies, the main ones were sleepiness, mild wobbliness, drooling, mild vomiting or diarrhoea, and a rise in the liver enzyme ALP. Call your vet if your dog becomes very drowsy, unsteady, stops eating or vomits repeatedly.

Should I give CBD and gabapentin at the same time?

Follow your vet's schedule. Gabapentin is usually given two or three times a day and CBD twice daily with food in most studies. No study has tested timing, so ask your vet whether they prefer the doses together or spaced apart for your dog.

Is gabapentin safe for dogs long term?

Vets prescribe it long term for many dogs. The common side effects are sleepiness and wobbliness, kidney function affects how long it stays in the body, and human liquid versions can contain xylitol, which is toxic to dogs. Use only the product and dose your vet prescribes.
