In most dogs melatonin starts to work within 15 to 30 minutes, and vets plan around a window of roughly 6 to 8 hours, so it can be given up to three times in 24 hours. For British owners the bigger questions are what you can legally buy (melatonin tablets are prescription-only for people in the UK, and no melatonin product is authorised for dogs) and how its quick, event-timed window compares with the calming products sold here, many of which need days or weeks to build up.
This guide is the UK buying view: the rules, the products British owners usually compare, what they cost in pounds and how far ahead each one has to start. For the pharmacology behind the numbers, see our main guide to how long melatonin lasts in dogs.

How long does melatonin last in dogs?
Melatonin is the same hormone your dog's pineal gland releases as daylight fades. Given as a supplement, it does not sedate a dog the way a prescription medicine does; it reinforces a signal the body already sends. In practice:
- Onset: most dogs settle noticeably within 15–30 minutes. Liquids sit at the faster end because there is no tablet to break down.
- Working window: about 6–8 hours. That figure comes from veterinary dosing schedules (the Merck Veterinary Manual describes 3–6 mg per dog every 6–8 hours), not from a stopwatch.
- Clearance: fast. In the canine pharmacokinetic study vets most often cite, the elimination half-life after an intravenous dose was 18.6 minutes (Yeleswaram et al., J Pineal Res 1997, PMID 9062870). Melatonin does not build up from one night to the next.
Treat 30 minutes as your lead time and 6–8 hours as a planning window rather than a precise measurement. The settling effect tends to outlast the blood level because melatonin triggers the switch into sleep, and sleep then carries itself.
Melatonin and UK rules: what British owners can actually buy
This is where the UK differs from much of the advice that fills search results, which is written for other countries.
- Human melatonin is prescription-only. The NHS states that melatonin is available on prescription only; UK brands include Circadin, Adaflex, Ceyesto, Slenyto and Syncrodin. The usual adult form is a 2 mg slow-release tablet that must be swallowed whole, not cut or crushed, so it is unsuitable for splitting into a dog dose.
- No melatonin product is authorised for dogs by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate (VMD). When a UK vet uses melatonin as a medicine, they prescribe it under the prescribing cascade, which allows an unauthorised or human product when no suitable authorised veterinary medicine exists.
- Calming supplements are complementary feed. Dog calming and sleep-support supplements are sold under UK feed law, enforced by local Trading Standards with the Food Standards Agency overseeing feed rules. They may not claim to treat or prevent disease, so look for "supports" wording and be wary of anything promising to fix anxiety.
- Imported human gummies are a gamble. When researchers tested 25 melatonin gummies sold in the United States, 22 were inaccurately labelled, containing 74% to 347% of the declared melatonin (Cohen PA et al., JAMA 2023, PMID 37097362). Some sugar-free products for people also contain xylitol, which is dangerous to dogs. Our guide to whether dogs can take human melatonin explains the risks in full.
How long UK calming options take to work, compared
The most useful question when you compare products in a British pet shop is not "which is strongest?" but "how far ahead do I have to start it?". Melatonin is one of the few options you can give on the day. Prices below were checked in October 2026 at the retailer named; they change often.
| Product | What it is | When to start / how long it covers | UK price seen (October 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pure Majesty Pets Melatonin for Dogs | Liquid supplement: 3 mg melatonin, 50 mg L-theanine, 25 mg alpha-casozepine, 25 mg chamomile extract, 5 mg magnesium, 0.5 mg B6 per mL | About 30 minutes before the event; 6–8 hour window; up to 3 doses in 24 hours | £25 (our UK store, free delivery, duties and VAT prepaid) |
| Zylkene (Vetoquinol) | Capsules of alpha-casozepine from cow's milk protein; no melatonin | Daily use; an RCVS Knowledge review found no evidence it works when given only shortly before a stressor, so start well ahead | 75 mg ×30 £27.09; 225 mg ×30 £33.99; 450 mg ×30 £57.09 (Zooplus UK) |
| YuMOVE calming tablets (Lintbells, formerly YuCALM) | Built around lemon balm and L-theanine; no melatonin listed | Daily tablets dosed by weight | 60 tablets £29.99 / 120 £52.99 (PDSA Pet Store) |
| Dorwest Herbs Scullcap & Valerian Tablets | Herbal tablets: valerian, mistletoe, gentian, scullcap | Daily; the maker advises a minimum of 3 weeks for best results | 100 tablets £12.90 (Newlands Pets) |
| Adaptil Calm Home Diffuser | Plug-in diffuser releasing a synthetic dog-appeasing pheromone | The PDSA suggests plugging it in a few weeks before fireworks season and keeping it topped up | Diffuser and refill £34.99 (PDSA Pet Store) |
| Pet Remedy Calming Spray | Calming spray for bedding, crates and rooms | Follow the label; sprayed into the dog's environment rather than given by mouth | 200 mL £17.99; 15 mL £7.99 (PDSA Pet Store) |
| Sileo (prescription-only) | Dexmedetomidine gel applied to the gum, authorised for noise fear in dogs | At the first signs of fear or the first bangs; can be repeated after 2 hours, up to 5 times per event | Prescribed by your vet; price set by the practice |
| Pexion (prescription-only) | Imepitoin tablets, authorised for noise phobia (and epilepsy) | Start 2 days before the expected noise, then twice daily | Prescribed by your vet; price set by the practice |
Two practical takeaways. First, if your dog is fine most of the year but falls apart on Bonfire Night, a product you can time to the evening suits the job better than one that needs three weeks of loading. Second, if your dog panics every year despite a good routine, speak to your vet now rather than in November: the PDSA recommends seeing your vet well before fireworks season so there is time to find the most effective medication. For a wider evidence ranking of these ingredients, see our best calming supplements for dogs in the UK.
Buying a vet medicine more cheaply: written prescriptions
If your vet prescribes Sileo, Pexion or another medicine, you can ask for a written prescription and buy it from a UK online vet pharmacy instead; services such as Vets4u accept a prescription uploaded or emailed. Under the Competition and Markets Authority's 2026 decision on vet services, written-prescription fees are being capped at £21 for the first medicine and £12.50 for each additional one, phased in by March 2027 at large groups and by September 2027 at smaller practices. The practice still has to see your dog and decide what is appropriate.
Melatonin dosage for dogs by weight (kg)
Duration means nothing if the dose is wrong. The chart below matches Pure Majesty Pets Melatonin for Dogs drops at 3 mg of melatonin per millilitre.
| Bodyweight | Typical melatonin amount | Liquid volume (3 mg/mL) | Maximum frequency |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 4.5 kg | About 1 mg | About 0.33 mL | Up to 3 times in 24 hours |
| 4.5–11 kg | About 1.5 mg | About 0.5 mL | Up to 3 times in 24 hours |
| 12–45 kg | About 3 mg | About 1 mL | Up to 3 times in 24 hours |
| Over 45 kg | 3–6 mg | About 1–2 mL | Up to 3 times in 24 hours |
Start at the low end for your dog's weight and only increase on your vet's advice. Our full melatonin dosage chart for dogs goes further by size.
What changes how long it lasts
| Factor | Effect on onset | Effect on the working window |
|---|---|---|
| Liquid vs tablet or chew | Liquid usually faster, with nothing to dissolve first | Broadly similar |
| Empty or light stomach | Slightly faster | Little change |
| Dose relative to bodyweight | Under-dosing reads as "it didn't work" | Correct kg-based dosing gives the fullest window |
| Timing relative to the stress | Much slower once a dog is already frightened | The biggest single variable; dose before, not during |
| Age and health | Varies | Older dogs with pain or cognitive change may wake whatever the dose; see your vet |
Where to buy in the UK and what to check on the label
Calming supplements are sold by Pets at Home, Zooplus UK, VioVet, PDSA Pet Store, Amazon UK and many vet practices, and you can also order direct from makers. Whatever you choose, check the label before the price tag:
- The melatonin amount per dose in mg. If a "calming chew" lists melatonin inside a proprietary blend without an amount, you cannot dose it by weight.
- No xylitol anywhere in the ingredients.
- Proper feed labelling. A UK-compliant complementary feed label states it is a complementary feed for dogs, gives directions for use, the business name and address, a batch number, the net quantity, a minimum storage life date and the analytical constituents.
- Import costs. On gov.uk rules, goods worth £135 or less bought from abroad should have VAT included by the seller, but anything over £135 is charged VAT (and possibly duty) by the delivery company before it hands the parcel over. We prepay duties and VAT on every UK order, so there is nothing to pay Royal Mail or the courier, whatever the basket size.

Timing it around the British calendar
Bonfire Night, Diwali and New Year
Fireworks in most UK neighbourhoods spread across the week around 5 November and again at New Year. Give melatonin about 30 minutes before the bangs usually start on each expected night rather than reacting to the first one, and walk your dog while it is still light. Our night-by-night Bonfire Night melatonin plan sets out the timings hour by hour.
Dark winter evenings
After the clocks go back in late October, early sunsets can blur an older dog's day-night cues. An evening dose 30 minutes before lights-out works with that rhythm. If your dog paces in the early hours, book a check-up: pain and canine cognitive dysfunction often sit behind night waking.
Car journeys and vet visits
Give it half an hour before you load the car. A two-hour motorway run sits inside one dose; a full day's travel may need a second, within the three-dose limit.
Common mistakes that make melatonin seem short-lived
- Dosing too late. Once a dog is highly aroused you are working uphill. Thirty minutes of lead time matters more than a bigger dose.
- Under-dosing a big dog. A 35 kg Labrador given a dose sized for a Chihuahua will look like a non-responder.
- Reaching for a human product. Prescription tablets are slow-release and must not be cut; imported gummies are unreliable and may contain xylitol.
- Expecting sedation. Melatonin supports settling, not unconsciousness. Awake but relaxed is a normal response.
- Judging it on a single night. Some dogs shift straight away; others need several consistent evenings.
- Skipping the cause. Pain, cognitive decline and undiagnosed illness disrupt sleep and will not be resolved by any supplement.
When to call your vet
Ring your vet practice if the restlessness is new, worsening or arrives with other signs: panting at rest, lameness, appetite loss, disorientation, soiling indoors, or crying that reads as pain rather than fear. In an older dog, sudden sleep disruption can indicate canine cognitive dysfunction, pain or hormonal disease, none of which a supplement will fix.
If your dog has eaten a human melatonin product, especially a sugar-free gummy, do not wait for symptoms. Call your vet (out of hours, a service such as Vets Now) or the Animal PoisonLine on 01202 509000, the 24-hour line run by the Veterinary Poisons Information Service; a fee applies per call.
Frequently asked questions
How quickly does melatonin work in dogs?
Most dogs settle noticeably within 15 to 30 minutes. Liquids sit at the faster end of that range because there is no tablet to break down first, and a light stomach can shorten onset a little further.
Is melatonin legal to give dogs in the UK?
Melatonin for people is prescription-only in the UK, and no melatonin product is authorised by the VMD for dogs, so a vet who wants to use it as a medicine prescribes it under the cascade. Calming and sleep-support supplements for dogs, including ones containing melatonin, are sold as complementary feed. Tell your vet what you are using, especially if your dog takes any medication.
Can I buy Sileo or Pexion without a prescription in the UK?
No. Both are prescription-only veterinary medicines, so your vet must examine your dog and prescribe them. You can ask for a written prescription and buy the medicine from an online vet pharmacy, and prescription fees are being capped at £21 for the first item under the CMA's remedies.
Which UK calming product works fastest?
Of the common options, melatonin and Sileo are the ones designed around the event itself: melatonin about 30 minutes before, Sileo at the first signs of fear. Zylkene, herbal tablets and pheromone diffusers are meant to be started days to weeks ahead, and Pexion is started two days before the expected noise.
Will one dose last through Bonfire Night?
Usually. A 6–8 hour window started 30 minutes before the fireworks usually begin covers most of an evening and carries into sleep. If displays run late or across several nights, plan each evening separately rather than increasing a single dose.
Can I give my dog melatonin more than once a day?
Yes. Standard guidance allows up to three doses in 24 hours, spaced apart, because the working window is roughly 6 to 8 hours. Keep each dose within the weight-based amount rather than doubling up, and check with your vet before regular long-term use.
